16 There are (A)six things that the Lord hates,
    (B)seven that are an abomination to him:
17 (C)haughty eyes, (D)a lying tongue,
    and (E)hands that shed innocent blood,
18 (F)a heart that devises wicked plans,
    (G)feet that make haste to run to evil,
19 (H)a false witness who (I)breathes out lies,
    and one who (J)sows discord among brothers.

Warnings Against Adultery

20 (K)My son, keep your father's commandment,
    (L)and forsake not your mother's teaching.
21 (M)Bind them on your heart always;
    (N)tie them around your neck.
22 (O)When you walk, they[a] will lead you;
    (P)when you lie down, they will (Q)watch over you;
    and when you awake, they will talk with you.
23 For the commandment is (R)a lamp and the teaching a light,
    and the (S)reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
24 to preserve you from the evil woman,[b]
    from the smooth tongue of (T)the adulteress.[c]
25 (U)Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
    and do not let her capture you with her (V)eyelashes;
26 for (W)the price of a prostitute is only (X)a loaf of bread,[d]
    but a married woman[e] (Y)hunts down a precious life.
27 Can a man carry (Z)fire next to his (AA)chest
    and his clothes not be burned?
28 Or can one (AB)walk on hot coals
    and his feet not be scorched?
29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife;
    none who touches her (AC)will go unpunished.
30 People do not despise a thief if he steals
    to (AD)satisfy his appetite when he is hungry,
31 but (AE)if he is caught, he will pay (AF)sevenfold;
    he will give all the goods of his house.
32 He who commits adultery lacks sense;
    he who does it destroys himself.
33 He will get wounds and dishonor,
    and his disgrace will not be wiped away.
34 For (AG)jealousy makes a man furious,
    and he will not spare when (AH)he takes revenge.
35 He will accept no compensation;
    he will refuse though you multiply gifts.

Warning Against the Adulteress

(AI)My son, keep my words
    and (AJ)treasure up my commandments with you;
(AK)keep my commandments and live;
    keep my teaching as (AL)the apple of your eye;
(AM)bind them on your fingers;
    (AN)write them on the tablet of your heart.
Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
    and call insight your intimate friend,
to keep you from (AO)the forbidden[f] woman,
    from (AP)the adulteress[g] with her smooth words.

For at (AQ)the window of my house
    I have looked out through my lattice,
and I have seen among (AR)the simple,
    I have perceived among the youths,
    a young man (AS)lacking sense,
