Sayings of King Lemuel
31 The sayings(A) of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.
2 Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb!
Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers!(B)
3 Do not spend your strength[a] on women,
your vigor on those who ruin kings.(C)
4 It is not for kings, Lemuel—
it is not for kings to drink wine,(D)
not for rulers to crave beer,
5 lest they drink(E) and forget what has been decreed,(F)
and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
6 Let beer be for those who are perishing,
wine(G) for those who are in anguish!
7 Let them drink(H) and forget their poverty
and remember their misery no more.
8 Speak(I) up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
9 Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.(J)
Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character
10 [b]A wife of noble character(K) who can find?(L)
She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband(M) has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.(N)
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.(O)
14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.(P)
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders(Q) of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.(R)
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise(S) at the city gate.

31 Paroles du roi Lemouel[a], maximes que sa mère[b] lui a enseignées :
2 Que te dirai-je, mon fils ?
Que te conseillerai-je, ô mon fils bien-aimé ?
Que te dirai-je, fils appelé de mes vœux ?
3 Ne gaspille pas tes forces avec les femmes[c],
ne te laisse pas mener par celles qui perdent les rois.
4 Il ne convient pas aux rois, Lemouel,
non, il ne convient pas aux rois de boire du vin,
ni à ceux qui gouvernent d’aimer les boissons enivrantes[d],
5 car, en buvant, ils pourraient oublier les lois édictées
et rendre des jugements qui lèsent le droit des pauvres.
6 Que l’on donne plutôt les boissons enivrantes à celui qui va périr,
et du vin à qui a le cœur amer.
7 Qu’il boive et qu’il oublie sa misère,
qu’il ne se souvienne plus de son tourment !
8 Ouvre la bouche pour défendre ceux qui ne peuvent parler,
pour défendre les droits de tous ceux qui sont délaissés.
9 Oui, parle pour prononcer de justes verdicts.
Défends les droits des pauvres et des défavorisés !
Poème de la femme de valeur
10 Qui se trouvera une femme de valeur ?
elle a bien plus de prix ╵que des coraux.
11 Son mari a confiance en elle,
il ne manquera pas ╵de biens dans sa maison.
12 Tous les jours de sa vie, ╵elle lui fait du bien,
et non du mal.
13 Elle cherche avec soin ╵du lin et de la laine
et les travaille de ses mains ╵avec plaisir.
14 Comme un vaisseau marchand,
elle apporte de loin ╵en son logis des vivres.
15 Elle se lève ╵quand il fait nuit encore,
pourvoit en nourriture ╵sa maisonnée,
elle donne ses instructions ╵à ses servantes.
16 Elle pense à un champ, ╵alors elle l’achète.
Du fruit de son travail, ╵elle plante une vigne.
17 Avec plein d’énergie, ╵elle se met à l’œuvre
de ses bras affermis.
18 Elle constate ╵que ses affaires marchent bien.
Jusque tard dans la nuit, ╵sa lampe est allumée.
19 Ses mains filent la laine
et ses doigts tissent ╵des vêtements.
20 Elle ouvre largement ╵la main à l’indigent
et tend les bras au pauvre.
21 Pour elle et tous les siens, ╵peu importe la neige,
car toute sa famille ╵est revêtue ╵de doubles vêtements[e].
22 Elle se fait des couvertures,
elle a des vêtements ╵de fin lin et de pourpre[f].
23 Son mari est connu ╵aux portes[g] de la ville.
Car il y siège ╵avec les responsables du pays.
24 Elle confectionne elle-même ╵des habits et les vend,
ainsi que des ceintures ╵qu’elle cède aux marchands.
25 La force et une grande dignité ╵lui servent de parure.
C’est avec le sourire ╵qu’elle envisage l’avenir.
26 Ses paroles sont sages,
elle dispense avec bonté ╵l’enseignement.
27 Elle veille à la bonne marche ╵de sa maison
et ne se nourrit pas ╵du pain de la paresse.
28 Ses fils se lèvent, ╵la disent bienheureuse,
et son mari aussi ╵fait son éloge :
29 « Il y a bien des filles ╵qui montrent leur valeur,
mais toi, tu les surpasses toutes. »
30 Or le charme est trompeur ╵et la beauté fugace ;
la femme qui craint l’Eternel ╵est digne de louanges.
31 Donnez-lui donc ╵le fruit de son travail !
Qu’on dise ses louanges ╵aux portes de la ville ╵pour tout ce qu’elle fait !

The Words of King Lemuel’s Mother
31 The words of King Lemuel, the utterance which his mother taught him:
2 What, my son?
And what, son of my womb?
And what, (A)son of my vows?
3 (B)Do not give your strength to women,
Nor your ways (C)to that which destroys kings.
4 (D)It is not for kings, O Lemuel,
It is not for kings to drink wine,
Nor for princes intoxicating drink;
5 (E)Lest they drink and forget the law,
And pervert the justice of all [a]the afflicted.
6 (F)Give strong drink to him who is perishing,
And wine to those who are bitter of heart.
7 Let him drink and forget his poverty,
And remember his misery no more.
8 (G)Open your mouth for the speechless,
In the cause of all who are [b]appointed to die.
9 Open your mouth, (H)judge righteously,
And (I)plead the cause of the poor and needy.
The Virtuous Wife
10 (J)Who[c] can find a [d]virtuous wife?
For her worth is far above rubies.
11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her;
So he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
13 She seeks wool and flax,
And willingly works with her hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships,
She brings her food from afar.
15 (K)She also rises while it is yet night,

And a portion for her maidservants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;

17 She girds herself with strength,
And strengthens her arms.

Her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many daughters have done well,
But you excel them all.”
30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands,
And let her own works praise her in the gates.

2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?
3 Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.
9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
14 She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.
15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
