The Words of Agur

30 The words of Agur son of Jakeh. The oracle.[a]

The man declares, I am weary, O God;
    I am weary, O God, and worn out.[b]
Surely I am too (A)stupid to be a man.
    I have not the understanding of a man.
I have not learned wisdom,
    nor have I knowledge of (B)the Holy One.
Who has (C)ascended to heaven and come down?
    Who has (D)gathered the wind in his fists?
Who has (E)wrapped up the waters in a garment?
    Who has established all (F)the ends of the earth?
(G)What is his name, and what is his son's name?
    Surely you know!

(H)Every word of God proves true;
    he is (I)a shield to those who take refuge in him.
(J)Do not add to his words,
    lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.

Two things I ask of you;
    deny them not to me (K)before I die:
Remove far from me falsehood and lying;
    give me neither poverty nor riches;
    feed me with the food that is (L)needful for me,
lest I be (M)full and (N)deny you
    and say, (O)“Who is the Lord?”
or lest I be poor and steal
    (P)and profane the name of my God.

10 (Q)Do not slander a servant to his master,
    (R)lest he curse you, and you be held guilty.

11 There are those[c] who (S)curse their fathers
    and do not bless their mothers.
12 There are those who are (T)clean in their own eyes
    but are not washed of their filth.
13 There are those—how (U)lofty are their eyes,
    how high their eyelids lift!
14 There are those whose teeth are (V)swords,
    whose (W)fangs are knives,
to (X)devour the poor from off the earth,
    the needy from among mankind.

15 The leech has two daughters:
    Give and Give.[d]
(Y)Three things are never satisfied;
    (Z)four never say, “Enough”:
16 (AA)Sheol, (AB)the barren womb,
    the land never satisfied with water,
    and the fire that never says, “Enough.”

17 The eye that (AC)mocks a father
    and (AD)scorns to obey a mother
will (AE)be picked out by (AF)the ravens of the valley
    and eaten by the vultures.

18 (AG)Three things are (AH)too wonderful for me;
    (AI)four I do not understand:
19 the way of an eagle in the sky,
    the way of a serpent on a rock,
the way of a ship on the high seas,
    and the way of a man with a virgin.

20 This is the way of an adulteress:
    she eats and wipes her mouth
    and says, “I have done no wrong.”

21 Under (AJ)three things (AK)the earth trembles;
    under (AL)four it cannot bear up:
22 (AM)a slave when he becomes king,
    and a fool when he is (AN)filled with food;
23 (AO)an unloved woman when she (AP)gets a husband,
    and a maidservant when she displaces her mistress.

24 (AQ)Four things on earth are small,
    but they are exceedingly wise:
25 (AR)the ants are a people not strong,
    yet they provide their food in the summer;
26 (AS)the rock badgers are a people not mighty,
    yet they make their homes in the cliffs;
27 the locusts have no (AT)king,
    yet all of them march in (AU)rank;
28 the lizard you can take in your hands,
    yet it is in kings' palaces.

29 (AV)Three things are stately in their tread;
    (AW)four are stately in their stride:
30 the lion, which is mightiest among beasts
    and (AX)does not turn back before any;
31 the (AY)strutting rooster,[e] the he-goat,
    and a king whose army is with him.[f]

32 If you have been foolish, exalting yourself,
    or if you have been devising evil,
    (AZ)put your hand on your mouth.
33 For pressing milk produces curds,
    pressing the nose produces blood,
    and pressing anger produces strife.

The Words of King Lemuel

31 The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him:

What are you doing, my son?[g] What are you doing, (BA)son of my womb?
    What are you doing, (BB)son of my vows?
Do (BC)not give your strength to women,
    your ways to those (BD)who destroy kings.
(BE)It is not for kings, O Lemuel,
    it is not for kings (BF)to drink wine,
    or for rulers to take (BG)strong drink,
lest they drink and forget what has been decreed
    and (BH)pervert the rights of all the afflicted.
Give strong drink to the one who (BI)is perishing,
    and wine to (BJ)those in bitter distress;[h]
(BK)let them drink and forget their poverty
    and remember their misery no more.
(BL)Open your mouth for the mute,
    for the rights of all who are destitute.[i]
Open your mouth, (BM)judge righteously,
    (BN)defend the rights of (BO)the poor and needy.

The Woman Who Fears the Lord

10 [j] (BP)An excellent wife who can find?
    She is far more precious than (BQ)jewels.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her,
    and he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good, and not harm,
    all the days of her life.
13 She (BR)seeks wool and flax,
    and works with willing hands.
14 She is like the ships of the merchant;
    she brings her food from afar.
15 She (BS)rises while it is yet night
    and (BT)provides food for her household
    and portions for her maidens.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
    with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
17 She (BU)dresses herself[k] with strength
    and makes her arms strong.
18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable.
    Her lamp does not go out at night.
19 She puts her hands to the distaff,
    and her hands hold the spindle.
20 She (BV)opens her hand to (BW)the poor
    and reaches out her hands to (BX)the needy.
21 She is not afraid of snow for her household,
    for all her household are clothed in (BY)scarlet.[l]
22 She makes (BZ)bed coverings for herself;
    her clothing is (CA)fine linen and (CB)purple.
23 Her husband is known in (CC)the gates
    when he sits among the elders of the land.
24 She makes (CD)linen garments and sells them;
    she delivers sashes to the merchant.
25 (CE)Strength and dignity are her clothing,
    and she laughs at the time to come.
26 She opens her mouth with wisdom,
    and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27 She looks well to the ways of her household
    and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and call her blessed;
    her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many (CF)women have done (CG)excellently,
    but you surpass them all.”
30 (CH)Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
    but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands,
    and let her works praise her in the gates.

The Humble and Contrite in Spirit

66 (A)Thus says the Lord:
(B)“Heaven is my throne,
    and the earth is my footstool;
what is the house that you would build for me,
    and what is the place of my rest?
(C)All these things my hand has made,
    and so all these things came to be,
declares the Lord.
(D)But this is the one to whom I will look:
    he who is humble and contrite in spirit
    and trembles at my word.

(E)“He who slaughters an ox is like one who kills a man;
    he who sacrifices a lamb, like one who breaks a dog's neck;
he who presents a grain offering, like one who offers (F)pig's blood;
    he who makes a memorial offering of frankincense, like one who blesses an idol.
(G)These have chosen their own ways,
    and their soul delights in their abominations;
(H)I also will choose harsh treatment for them
    and bring (I)their fears upon them,
(J)because when I called, no one answered,
    when I spoke, they did not listen;
(K)but they did what was evil in my eyes
    and chose that in which I did not delight.”

Hear the word of the Lord,
    you who tremble at his word:
“Your brothers who hate you
    and cast you out for my name's sake
have said, (L)‘Let the Lord be glorified,
    that we may see your joy’;
    but it is they who shall be put to shame.

“The sound of an uproar from the city!
    A sound from the temple!
The sound of the Lord,
    (M)rendering recompense to his enemies!

Rejoice with Jerusalem

(N)“Before she was in labor
    she gave birth;
before her pain came upon her
    she delivered a son.
Who has heard such a thing?
    Who has seen such things?
Shall a land be born in one day?
    Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment?
For (O)as soon as Zion was in labor
    she brought forth her children.
Shall I bring to the point of birth and not cause to bring forth?”
    says the Lord;
“shall I, who cause to bring forth, shut the womb?”
    says your God.

10 (P)“Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
    all you who love her;
rejoice with her in joy,
    all you who mourn over her;
11 that you may nurse and be satisfied
    from her consoling breast;
that you may drink deeply with delight
    from her glorious abundance.”[a]

12 For thus says the Lord:
(Q)“Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
    and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and (R)you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip,
    and bounced upon her knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts,
    so (S)I will comfort you;
    you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
14 You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;
    (T)your bones shall flourish like the grass;
and (U)the hand of the Lord shall be known to his servants,
    and he shall show his indignation against his enemies.

Final Judgment and Glory of the Lord

15 “For behold, (V)the Lord will come in fire,
    and (W)his chariots like the whirlwind,
to render his anger in fury,
    and his rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For (X)by fire (Y)will the Lord enter into judgment,
    and by his sword, with all flesh;
    and those slain by the Lord shall be many.

17 (Z)“Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, (AA)eating pig's flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the Lord.

18 “For I know[b] their works and their thoughts, and the time is coming[c] (AB)to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and shall see my glory, 19 and I will set a sign among them. And from them (AC)I will send survivors to the nations, to (AD)Tarshish, (AE)Pul, and (AF)Lud, who draw the bow, to (AG)Tubal and (AH)Javan, (AI)to the coastlands far away, (AJ)that have not heard my fame or seen my glory. And they shall declare my glory among the nations. 20 (AK)And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations (AL)as an offering to the Lord, on horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the Lord. 21 (AM)And some of them also I will take for priests and for Levites, says the Lord.

22 “For as (AN)the new heavens and the new earth
    that I make
shall remain before me, says the Lord,
    so (AO)shall your offspring and your name remain.
23 (AP)From new moon to new moon,
    and from Sabbath to Sabbath,
all flesh shall come to worship before me,
declares the Lord.

24 “And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For (AQ)their worm shall not die, (AR)their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

The Day of the Lord Will Come

This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them (A)I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, (B)that you should remember the predictions of (C)the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come (D)in the last days with scoffing, (E)following their own sinful desires. (F)They will say, “Where is the promise of (G)his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth (H)was formed out of water and through water (I)by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed (J)was deluged with water and (K)perished. But by the same word (L)the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and (M)destruction of the ungodly.

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and (N)a thousand years as one day. (O)The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise (P)as some count slowness, but (Q)is patient toward you,[a] (R)not wishing that any should perish, but (S)that all should reach repentance. 10 But (T)the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then (U)the heavens will pass away with a roar, and (V)the heavenly bodies[b] will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.[c]

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, (W)what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 (X)waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and (Y)the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for (Z)new heavens and a new earth (AA)in which righteousness dwells.

Final Words

14 (AB)Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him (AC)without spot or (AD)blemish, and (AE)at peace. 15 And count (AF)the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as (AG)our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you (AH)according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. (AI)There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, (AJ)as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, (AK)knowing this beforehand, (AL)take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But (AM)grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (AN)To him be the glory both now and to the day of (AO)eternity. Amen.
