Warnings and Instructions

28 The wicked (A)flee when no one is pursuing,
But the righteous are [a]bold as a lion.
Due to a [b]wrongdoing of [c]a land its leaders are (B)many,
But (C)by a person of understanding and knowledge, so it endures.
A (D)poor man who oppresses the helpless
Is like a driving rain [d]which leaves no food.
Those who abandon the Law (E)praise the wicked,
But those who keep the Law (F)strive against them.
Evil people (G)do not understand justice,
But those who seek the Lord (H)understand everything.
(I)Better is a poor person who walks in his integrity,
Than a person who is [e]crooked, though he is rich.
He who keeps the Law is a discerning son,
But he who is a companion of (J)gluttons humiliates his father.
One who increases his wealth by [f](K)interest of any kind,
Collects it (L)for one who is gracious to the poor.
One who turns his ear away from listening to the Law,
Even his (M)prayer is an abomination.
10 One who leads the upright astray in an evil way
Will (N)himself fall into his own pit,
But the (O)blameless will inherit good.
11 The rich person is (P)wise in his own eyes,
But the poor who has understanding [g]sees through him.
12 When the (Q)righteous triumph, there is great glory,
But (R)when the wicked rise, people [h]hide themselves.
13 One who (S)conceals his wrongdoings will not prosper,
But one who (T)confesses and abandons them will find compassion.
14 How blessed is the person who (U)fears always,
But one who (V)hardens his heart will fall into disaster.
15 Like a (W)roaring lion and a rushing bear
Is a (X)wicked ruler over a poor people.
16 A (Y)leader who is a great oppressor lacks understanding,
But a person who hates unjust gain will prolong his days.
17 A person who is (Z)burdened with the guilt of human blood
Will [i]be a fugitive until death; no one is to support him!
18 One who walks blamelessly will receive help,

But one who follows empty pursuits will have plenty of poverty.

But one who (AE)hurries to be rich will not go unpunished.

22 A person with an (AH)evil eye (AI)hurries after wealth
And does not know that poverty will come upon him.
23 One who (AJ)rebukes a person will afterward find more favor

24 He who (AL)robs his father or his mother
And says, “There is no wrong done,”

26 One who (AQ)trusts in his own heart is a fool,
But one who walks wisely will flee to safety.

28 When the wicked rise, people hide themselves;
But when they perish, the righteous increase.

28 The wicked flee(A) though no one pursues,(B)
    but the righteous are as bold as a lion.(C)

When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers,
    but a ruler with discernment and knowledge maintains order.

A ruler[a] who oppresses the poor
    is like a driving rain that leaves no crops.

Those who forsake instruction praise the wicked,
    but those who heed it resist them.

Evildoers do not understand what is right,
    but those who seek the Lord understand it fully.

Better the poor whose walk is blameless
    than the rich whose ways are perverse.(D)

A discerning son heeds instruction,
    but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.(E)

Whoever increases wealth by taking interest(F) or profit from the poor
    amasses it for another,(G) who will be kind to the poor.(H)

If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction,
    even their prayers are detestable.(I)

10 Whoever leads the upright along an evil path
    will fall into their own trap,(J)
    but the blameless will receive a good inheritance.

11 The rich are wise in their own eyes;
    one who is poor and discerning sees how deluded they are.

12 When the righteous triumph, there is great elation;(K)
    but when the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding.(L)

13 Whoever conceals their sins(M) does not prosper,
    but the one who confesses(N) and renounces them finds mercy.(O)

14 Blessed is the one who always trembles before God,
    but whoever hardens their heart falls into trouble.

15 Like a roaring lion or a charging bear
    is a wicked ruler over a helpless people.

16 A tyrannical ruler practices extortion,
    but one who hates ill-gotten gain will enjoy a long reign.

17 Anyone tormented by the guilt of murder
    will seek refuge(P) in the grave;
    let no one hold them back.

18 The one whose walk is blameless is kept safe,(Q)
    but the one whose ways are perverse will fall(R) into the pit.[b]

19 Those who work their land will have abundant food,
    but those who chase fantasies will have their fill of poverty.(S)

20 A faithful person will be richly blessed,
    but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.(T)

21 To show partiality(U) is not good(V)
    yet a person will do wrong for a piece of bread.(W)

22 The stingy are eager to get rich
    and are unaware that poverty awaits them.(X)

23 Whoever rebukes a person will in the end gain favor
    rather than one who has a flattering tongue.(Y)

24 Whoever robs their father or mother(Z)
    and says, “It’s not wrong,”
    is partner to one who destroys.(AA)

25 The greedy stir up conflict,(AB)
    but those who trust in the Lord(AC) will prosper.

26 Those who trust in themselves are fools,(AD)
    but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.(AE)

27 Those who give to the poor will lack nothing,(AF)
    but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses.(AG)

28 When the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding;(AH)
    but when the wicked perish, the righteous thrive.

28 The wicked flee when no one pursues them,
But the righteous are as bold as a lion.(A)

When a land does wrong, it has many princes,
But when the ruler is a man of understanding and knowledge, its stability endures.

A poor man who oppresses and exploits the lowly
Is like a sweeping rain which leaves no food.(B)

Those who [a]set aside the law [of God and man] praise the wicked,
But those who keep the law [of God and man] struggle with them.(C)

Evil men do not understand justice,
But they who long for and seek the Lord understand it fully.(D)

Better is the poor who walks in his integrity
Than he who is crooked and two-faced though he is rich.(E)

He who keeps the law [of God and man] is a wise and discerning son,
But he who is a companion of gluttons humiliates his father [and himself].

He who increases his wealth by interest and usury (excessive interest)
Gathers it for him who is gracious to the poor.(F)

He who turns his ear away from listening to the law [of God and man],
Even his prayer is repulsive [to God].(G)

But the poor man who has understanding [because he relies on God] is able to see through him.

He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper,
But whoever confesses and [b]turns away from his sins will find compassion and mercy.(H)

Blessed and favored by God is the man who fears [sin and its consequence] at all times,
But he who hardens his heart [and is determined to sin] will fall into disaster.

Like a roaring lion and a charging bear
Is a wicked ruler over a poor people.
16 
A leader who is a great oppressor lacks understanding and common sense [and his wickedness shortens his days],
But he who hates unjust gain will [be blessed and] prolong his days.
17 
A man who is burdened with the guilt of human blood (murder)
Will be a fugitive until death; let no one support him or give him refuge.
18 
He who walks blamelessly and uprightly will be kept safe,
But he who is crooked (perverse) will suddenly fall.
19 
He who cultivates his land will have plenty of bread,
But he who follows worthless people and frivolous pursuits will have plenty of poverty.
20 
A faithful (right-minded) man will abound with blessings,
But he who hurries to be rich will not go unpunished.(I)

To have regard for one person over another and to show favoritism is not good,
Because for a piece of bread a man will transgress.
22 
He who has an evil and envious eye hurries to be rich
And does not know that poverty will come upon him.(J)

He who [appropriately] reprimands a [wise] man will afterward find more favor
Than he who flatters with the tongue.
24 
He who robs his father or his mother
And says, “This is no sin,”
Is [not only a thief but also] the companion of a man who destroys.
25 
An arrogant and greedy man stirs up strife,
But he who trusts in the Lord will be blessed and prosper.
26 
He who trusts confidently in his own heart is a [dull, thickheaded] fool,
But he who walks in [skillful and godly] wisdom will be rescued.(K)
27 
He who gives to the poor will never want,
But he who shuts his eyes [from their need] will have many curses.(L)
28 
When the wicked rise [to power], men hide themselves;
But when the wicked perish, the [consistently] righteous increase and become great.(M)

28 Fogem os ímpios, sem que ninguém os persiga; mas qualquer justo está confiado como o filho do leão. Por causa da transgressão da terra, muitos são os seus príncipes, mas, por virtude de homens prudentes e sábios, ela continuará. O homem pobre que oprime os pobres é como chuva impetuosa, que não deixa nenhum trigo. Os que deixam a lei louvam o ímpio; mas os que guardam a lei pelejam contra eles. O que desvia os seus ouvidos de ouvir a lei, até a sua oração será abominável. 10 O que faz com que os retos se desviem para um mau caminho, ele mesmo cairá na sua cova; mas os sinceros herdarão o bem. 11 O homem rico é sábio aos seus próprios olhos; mas o pobre que é sábio o examina. 12 Quando os justos triunfam, há grande alegria; mas, quando os ímpios sobem, os homens escondem-se. 13 O que encobre as suas transgressões nunca prosperará; mas o que as confessa e deixa alcançará misericórdia. 14 Bem-aventurado o homem que continuamente teme; mas o que endurece o seu coração virá a cair no mal. 15 Como leão bramidor e urso faminto, assim é o ímpio que domina sobre um povo pobre. 16 O príncipe falto de inteligência também multiplica as opressões, mas o que aborrece a avareza prolongará os seus dias. 17 O homem carregado do sangue de qualquer pessoa fugirá até à cova; ninguém o detenha. 18 O que anda sinceramente salvar-se-á, mas o perverso em seus caminhos cairá logo. 19 O que lavrar a sua terra virá a fartar-se de pão, mas o que segue a ociosos se fartará de pobreza. 20 O homem fiel abundará em bênçãos, mas o que se apressa a enriquecer não ficará sem castigo. 21 Ter respeito à aparência de pessoas não é bom, porque até por um bocado de pão o homem prevaricará. 22 Aquele que tem um olho mau corre atrás das riquezas, mas não sabe que há de vir sobre ele a pobreza. 23 O que repreende ao homem achará depois mais favor do que aquele que lisonjeia com a língua. 24 O que rouba a seu pai ou a sua mãe e diz: Não transgressão, companheiro é do destruidor. 25 O altivo de ânimo levanta contendas, mas o que confia no Senhor engordará. 26 O que confia no seu próprio coração é insensato, mas o que anda sabiamente escapará. 27 O que dá ao pobre não terá necessidade, mas o que esconde os olhos terá muitas maldições.

28 Quando os ímpios sobem, os homens se escondem, mas, quando eles perecem, os justos se multiplicam.

28 O ímpio foge,
    embora ninguém o persiga,
mas os justos são corajosos como o leão.

Os pecados de uma nação fazem mudar
    sempre os seus governantes,
mas a ordem se mantém
    com um líder sábio e sensato.

O pobre que se torna poderoso
    e oprime os pobres
é como a tempestade súbita
    que destrói toda a plantação.

Os que abandonam a lei
    elogiam os ímpios,
mas os que obedecem à lei
    lutam contra eles.

Os homens maus
    não entendem a justiça,
mas os que buscam o Senhor
    a entendem plenamente.

Melhor é o pobre íntegro em sua conduta
    do que o rico perverso em seus caminhos.

Quem obedece à lei é filho sábio,
mas o companheiro dos glutões
    envergonha o pai.

Quem aumenta sua riqueza
    com juros exorbitantes
ajunta para algum outro,
    que será bondoso com os pobres.

Se alguém se recusa a ouvir a lei,
até suas orações serão detestáveis.

10 Quem leva o homem direito
    pelo mau caminho
cairá ele mesmo
    na armadilha que preparou,
mas o que não se deixa corromper
    terá boa recompensa.

11 O rico pode até se julgar sábio,
mas o pobre que tem discernimento
    o conhece a fundo.

12 Quando os justos triunfam,
    há prosperidade geral[a],
mas, quando os ímpios sobem ao poder,
    os homens tratam de esconder-se.

13 Quem esconde os seus pecados
    não prospera,
mas quem os confessa e os abandona
    encontra misericórdia.

14 Como é feliz o homem constante
    no temor do Senhor!
Mas quem endurece o coração
    cairá na desgraça.

15 Como um leão que ruge ou um urso feroz
é o ímpio que governa
    um povo necessitado.

16 O governante sem discernimento
    aumenta as opressões,
mas os que odeiam o ganho desonesto
    prolongarão o seu governo.

17 O assassino atormentado pela culpa
    será fugitivo até a morte;
que ninguém o proteja!

18 Quem procede com integridade
    viverá seguro,
mas quem procede com perversidade
    de repente cairá.

19 Quem lavra sua terra
    terá comida com fartura,
mas quem persegue fantasias
    se fartará de miséria.

20 O fiel será ricamente abençoado,
mas quem tenta enriquecer-se depressa
    não ficará sem castigo.

21 Agir com parcialidade não é bom;
pois até por um pedaço de pão
    o homem se dispõe a fazer o mal.

22 O invejoso é ávido por riquezas,
e não percebe que a pobreza o aguarda.

23 Quem repreende o próximo
    obterá por fim mais favor
do que aquele que só sabe bajular.

24 Quem rouba seu pai ou sua mãe
    e diz: “Não é errado”,
é amigo de quem destrói.

25 O ganancioso provoca brigas,
mas quem confia no Senhor prosperará.

26 Quem confia em si mesmo é insensato,
mas quem anda segundo a sabedoria
    não corre perigo.

27 Quem dá aos pobres
    não passará necessidade,
mas quem fecha os olhos para não vê-los
    sofrerá muitas maldições.

28 Quando os ímpios sobem ao poder,
    o povo se esconde;
mas, quando eles sucumbem,
    os justos florescem.
