23 When you sit down to dine with a ruler,
think carefully about who is before you.
2 If you have a big appetite,
put a knife to your throat!
3 Don’t be greedy for his delicacies,
for they are deceptive food.
4 Don’t exhaust yourself in pursuit of wealth;
be smart enough to desist.
5 If you make your eyes rush at it,
it’s no longer there!
For wealth will surely grow wings,
like an eagle flying off to the sky.
6 Don’t eat the food of a stingy man;
don’t be greedy for his delicacies.
7 For he is like someone who keeps accounts —
“Eat! Drink!” he says to you,
but he doesn’t really mean it.
8 The little you eat you will vomit up,
and your compliments will have been wasted.
9 Don’t speak in the ears of a fool,
for he will only despise the common sense in your words.
10 Don’t move the ancient boundary stone
or encroach on the land of the fatherless;
11 for their Redeemer is strong;
he will take up their fight against you.
12 Apply your mind to discipline
and your ears to words of knowledge.
13 Don’t withhold discipline from a child —
if you beat him with a stick, he won’t die!
14 If you beat him with a stick,
you will save him from Sh’ol.
15 My son, if your heart is wise,
then my own heart too is glad;
16 my inmost being rejoices
when your lips say what is right.
17 Don’t envy sinners, but follow the example
of those who always fear God;
18 for then you will have a future;
what you hope for will not be cut off.
19 You, my son: listen, be wise,
and set your mind on the right way.
20 Don’t be one of those who guzzle wine
or of those who eat meat to excess,
21 for both drunkard and glutton will become poor —
drowsiness will clothe them with rags.
22 Listen to your father, who gave you life;
and don’t despise your mother when she gets old.
23 Buy the truth, don’t sell it,
also wisdom, discipline and discernment.
24 A righteous person’s father will be filled with joy;
yes, he whose son is wise will rejoice in him.
25 So let your father and mother be glad;
let her who gave you birth rejoice.
26 My son, give me your heart;
let your eyes observe my ways.
27 A prostitute is a deep ditch,
and a forbidden woman like a narrow well.
28 She lies in wait to snatch her prey
and adds to the number of faithless men.
29 Who has misery? Who has regret?
Who fights and complains all the time?
Who gets bruised for no good reason?
Who has bloodshot eyes?
30 Those who spend their time over wine,
those always trying out mixed drinks.
31 Don’t gaze at the red wine
as it gives its color to the cup.
It may glide down smoothly now;
32 but in the end, it bites like a serpent —
yes, it strikes like a poisonous snake.
33 Your eyes will see peculiar things,
your mind will utter nonsense.
34 You will feel as if lying on the waves of the sea
or sprawled on top of the mast —
35 “They hit me, but I didn’t feel it!
They beat me up, and I didn’t even know it!
When will I wake up? . . .
I’ll go get another drink.”

Dertig spreuken van wijze mensen (vervolg)
23 Als je bij een heerser aan tafel zit,
onthoud dan goed met wie je te maken hebt.
2 Eet bescheiden,
vooral als je van veel eten houdt.
3 Laat je niet verleiden door al het lekkers dat hij je voorzet.
Want het kan heel goed zijn dat hij je daarmee probeert om te kopen.
4 Waarom zou je heel hard werken om rijk te worden?
Waarom erover piekeren hoe je rijk kan worden?
5 Want plotseling zal je rijkdom vleugels krijgen en wegvliegen,
verdwijnen als een wegschietende arend.
6 Ga niet eten bij iemand die slecht en gierig is.
Laat je niet verleiden door zijn lekkers.
7 Hij zegt wel: "Eet en drink nog wat," maar eigenlijk vindt hij het zonde.
Hij zegt het alleen omdat hij iets van je wil.
8 Uiteindelijk zal zijn eten je misselijk maken.
Je vriendelijke woorden zul je aan hem hebben verspild.
9 Doe geen moeite iets verstandigs tegen een dwaas te zeggen.
Hij waardeert je wijsheid toch niet.
10 Verleg niet de grenzen van de akkers die lang geleden door je voorouders zijn vastgesteld.[a]
Neem weeskinderen hun akkers niet af.
11 Want ze hebben een machtige Verdediger.
Hij zal voor hen opkomen.
12 Luister naar goede raad
en houd je oren open voor wijze woorden.
13 Straf een kind als het nodig is.
Hij zal van een pak slaag heus niet dood gaan.
14 Je slaat hem wel met de stok,
maar daarmee red je juist zijn leven.
15 Mijn zoon, als je wijs en verstandig bent,
zal ik daar blij over zijn.
16 Ik zal trots op je zijn
als ik je verstandige dingen hoor zeggen.
17 Wees niet jaloers op mensen die zich niets van God aantrekken.
Zorg er liever voor dat je diep ontzag hebt voor de Heer.
18 Je zal ervoor beloond worden.
Je zal krijgen waar je naar verlangt.
19 Luister, mijn zoon, en wees wijs.
Kies er met je hele hart voor om de juiste weg te gaan.
20 Ga niet om met mensen die altijd maar feestvieren.
21 Want zuipers en veelvraten verslapen hun dag,
worden arm en lopen uiteindelijk in vodden.
22 Luister naar je ouders uit wie je bent ontstaan.
Heb ook nog respect voor hen als ze oud geworden zijn.
23 Kies altijd voor waarheid en goede raad.
Ruil ze nooit in voor iets anders.
24 Ouders zijn blij met een goede zoon.
Ze verheugen zich over zijn wijsheid.
25 Ik hoop dat je vader en moeder blij met je zullen zijn.
Zij hebben je het leven gegeven.
26 Mijn zoon, vertrouw mij.
Leef op de manier die ik je heb voorgedaan.
27 Luister: een hoer is als een diepe kuil.
Ze is als een diepe put waar je nooit meer uit komt.
28 Ze loert op je als een rover.
Ze heeft al heel veel mensen verleid.
29 Wie roepen er aldoor ach en wee?
Wie lopen altijd te ruziën en te klagen?
Wie raken altijd nodeloos gewond?
Wie lopen altijd met rode ogen?
30 Mensen die bij elkaar komen om eens lekker door te drinken
en daar de hele nacht mee doorgaan.
31 Laat je niet verleiden door de wijn,
prachtig rood fonkelend en schitterend in de beker.
Hij is zo heerlijk!
32 Maar uiteindelijk bijt hij als een slang,
is hij giftig als een adder.
33 Je gaat naar andere vrouwen kijken.
Je zegt dingen die je niet had moeten zeggen.
34 Je voelt je alsof je midden op zee bent,
alsof je moet slapen in het topje van de mast.
35 Later zeg je: "Ze hebben me geschopt en geslagen,
maar ik heb er niets van gevoeld.
Ik moest maar eens goed wakker worden.
Daar heb ik eerst een slok wijn voor nodig."

note well what[a] is before you,
2 and put a knife to your throat
if you are given to gluttony.
3 Do not crave his delicacies,(A)
for that food is deceptive.
Saying 8
4 Do not wear yourself out to get rich;
do not trust your own cleverness.
5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,(B)
for they will surely sprout wings
and fly off to the sky like an eagle.(C)

6 Do not eat the food of a begrudging host,
do not crave his delicacies;(D)
7 for he is the kind of person
who is always thinking about the cost.[b]
“Eat and drink,” he says to you,
but his heart is not with you.
8 You will vomit up the little you have eaten
and will have wasted your compliments.

for they will scorn your prudent words.(E)

or gorge themselves on meat,

Who has strife? Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
30 Those who linger over wine,(Z)
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly!
32 In the end it bites like a snake
and poisons like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange sights,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.
34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying on top of the rigging.
35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
so I can find another drink?”(AA)
