23 When you sit to eat with a ruler,
you shall surely observe what is before you,
2 and you shall put a knife to your throat
if you have a big appetite.[a]
3 Do not desire his delicacies,
for[b] it is food of deception.
4 Do not tire in order to become rich;
out of your understanding, may you desist.
5 Your eyes will alight[c] on it, but there is nothing to it,
for suddenly it will make for itself wings
like an eagle and it will be exhausted in the heavens.
6 Do not eat the bread of the stingy,[d]
and do not desire his delicacies.
7 For, like hair in his throat,[e] so it is.[f]
“Eat and drink!” he will say to you,
but his heart will not be with you.
8 Your morsel you have eaten, you will vomit it up,
and you will waste your pleasant words.
9 In the ears of a fool do not speak,
for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
10 Do not remove an ancient boundary marker,
and on the fields of orphans do not encroach;
11 For their redeemer is strong,
he himself will plead their cause against you.
12 Apply your heart[g] to instruction,
and your ear to sayings of knowledge.
13 Do not withhold discipline from a child,
if you will beat him with the rod, he will not die.
14 As for you, with the rod you shall beat him,
and his life[h] you will save from Sheol.[i]
15 My child, if your heart[j] is wise,
my heart will be glad—even me!
16 And my insides[k] will rejoice
when your lips speak what is upright.
17 May your heart[l] not envy the sinners,
but live in fear of Yahweh all day.[m]
18 Surely[n] there is a future,
and your hope will not be cut off.
19 You, my child, hear and be wise,
and direct your heart[o] on the road.
20 Do not be among drinkers of wine,
among gluttonous eaters of their meat.[p]
21 For the drunkard and gluttonous, they will become poor,
and with rags, drowsiness will clothe them.
22 Listen to your father—he who gave you life,[q]
and do not despise your mother when[r] she is old.
23 Buy truth and do not sell it,
wisdom and instruction and understanding.
24 The father of the righteous will surely rejoice;
he who bears a wise person will be happy with him.
25 May your father and your mother be glad,
and may she who bore you rejoice.
26 My child, may you give your heart[s] to me,
and may your eyes delight in my ways.
27 For a deep pit is a prostitute,[t]
and a narrow well is an adulteress.[u]
28 She is also like a robber lying in wait,
and the faithless among mankind she increases.
29 To whom is woe? To whom is sorrow? To whom are quarrels? To whom is complaint?
To whom are wounds without cause? To whom is redness of the eyes?
30 To those who linger over wine,
to those who come to try mixed wine.
31 Do not look at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles[v] on the cup,
going down smoothly.
32 In the end,[w] it will bite like a serpent,
and it will sting like an adder.
33 Your eyes will see strange things,
and your heart[x] will speak perverse things.
34 And you will be like him who lies down in the heart of the sea,
and like him who lies down on top of a mast.
35 “They struck me; I was not hurt. They beat me; I did not know it.
When I will awake, I will continue; I will seek it again.”

Listen to Your Father
23 When you sit down to eat with a ruler,
Consider carefully what is before you;
2 And put a knife to your throat
If you are a man given to appetite.
3 Do not desire his delicacies,
For they are deceptive food.
4 (A)Do not overwork to be rich;
(B)Because of your own understanding, cease!
5 [a]Will you set your eyes on that which is not?
For riches certainly make themselves wings;
They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.
6 Do not eat the bread of (C)a[b] miser,
Nor desire his delicacies;
7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
“Eat and drink!” (D)he says to you,
But his heart is not with you.
8 The morsel you have eaten, you will vomit up,
And waste your pleasant words.
9 (E)Do not speak in the hearing of a fool,
For he will despise the wisdom of your words.
10 Do not remove the ancient [c]landmark,
Nor enter the fields of the fatherless;
11 (F)For their Redeemer is mighty;
He will plead their cause against you.
12 Apply your heart to instruction,
And your ears to words of knowledge.
13 (G)Do not withhold correction from a child,
For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die.
14 You shall beat him with a rod,
And deliver his soul from [d]hell.
15 My son, if your heart is wise,
My heart will rejoice—indeed, I myself;
16 Yes, my [e]inmost being will rejoice
When your lips speak right things.
17 (H)Do not let your heart envy sinners,
But (I)be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day;
18 (J)For surely there is a [f]hereafter,
And your hope will not be cut off.
19 Hear, my son, and be wise;
And guide your heart in the way.
20 (K)Do not mix with winebibbers,
Or with gluttonous eaters of meat;
21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty,
And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.
22 (L)Listen to your father who begot you,
And do not despise your mother when she is old.
23 (M)Buy the truth, and do not sell it,
Also wisdom and instruction and understanding.
24 (N)The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice,
And he who begets a wise child will delight in him.
25 Let your father and your mother be glad,
And let her who bore you rejoice.
26 My son, give me your heart,
And let your eyes observe my ways.
27 (O)For a harlot is a deep pit,
And a seductress is a narrow well.
28 (P)She also lies in wait as for a victim,
And increases the unfaithful among men.
29 (Q)Who has woe?
Who has sorrow?
Who has contentions?
Who has complaints?
Who has wounds without cause?
Who (R)has redness of eyes?
30 (S)Those who linger long at the wine,
Those who go in search of (T)mixed wine.
31 Do not look on the wine when it is red,
When it sparkles in the cup,
When it [g]swirls around smoothly;
32 At the last it bites like a serpent,
And stings like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange things,
And your heart will utter perverse things.
34 Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the [h]midst of the sea,
Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying:
35 “They(U) have struck me, but I was not hurt;
They have beaten me, but I did not feel it.
When shall (V)I awake, that I may seek another drink?”

23 Cuando te sientes a comer con alguien importante,

2 No te apresures a comer
aunque tengas mucha hambre.
3 No te llenes de los manjares que te ofrezcan
porque te pones en evidencia.

4 No arruines tu salud por las riquezas,
más bien sé sabio y deja esa obsesión.
5 En un momento las tienes y luego se esfuman;
vuelan tan rápido que parece que tuvieran alas como las águilas.

6 No te sientes a la mesa de un avaro
y aléjate de sus manjares,
7 porque así es la clase de gente que siempre piensa en el costo.
Así que aunque te diga: «Come y bebe»,
no es sincero contigo y
8 si comes de su comida te darán náuseas.
Terminarás vomitando todo
y la sobremesa será un fracaso.

9 No trates de enseñarle a un bruto,
pues se burlará de tus palabras sabias.

10 Nunca cambies los linderos antiguos,
ni invadas la tierra de los huérfanos
11 porque su Defensor es poderoso,
se pondrá en tu contra y los defenderá.

12 Concentra tu mente en la disciplina,
y tus oídos en aprender todo lo que puedas.

13 No te niegues a castigar al muchacho,
que unos cuantos azotes no lo van a matar;
14 dale unos azotes
y así lo librarás de la muerte.

15 Hijo mío si te haces sabio,
se me alegrará el corazón;
16 me sentiré muy feliz
si eres honesto en lo que dices.

17 No sientas envidia de los perversos
y haz todo lo posible por respetar al SEÑOR.
18 Siempre hay esperanza;
la esperanza nunca se acaba.

19 Así que escucha, hijo mío, y sé sabio;
preocúpate por vivir honestamente.
20 No te hagas amigo de los borrachos
ni te juntes con los comilones,
21 porque los borrachos y los comilones terminan en la ruina,
y los perezosos terminan vistiendo harapos.

22 Escucha lo que te dice tu papá, que te engendró;
respeta a tu mamá, aun cuando esté anciana.
23 Vale la pena invertir para obtener la verdad,
la sabiduría, el aprendizaje y el entendimiento;
invierte en ellos y no los vendas.
24 El papá del justo se llena de felicidad,
y el que tiene un hijo sabio se alegrará con él.
25 Entonces haz felices a tu papá y tu mamá;
¡que se llene de alegría la que te dio a luz!

26 Hijo mío, presta atención a lo que te digo
y fíjate en el ejemplo que te doy;
27 porque la mujer de otro, la prostituta,
es como un pozo profundo y estrecho;
28 se pone al acecho como un ladrón,
y hace que los hombres se conviertan en pecadores.

29 ¿Quién se queja? ¿A quién le duele?
¿Quién se mete en líos? ¿Quién gime?
¿Quién es herido sin razón?
¿Quién tiene los ojos morados?
30 El que vive pegado a la botella de vino
y anda mezclando bebidas.
31 Así que no te fijes en lo rojo que se pone el vino,
ni como brilla en la copa ni como baja suavemente;
32 porque al final muerde como una serpiente,
echa veneno como una víbora.
33 El vino te hará ver alucinaciones
e imaginar porquerías;
34 sentirás como si estuvieras en medio del mar,
recostado en lo alto del palo mayor.
35 Y dirás: «No sentí cuando me golpearon,
me dieron una paliza y ni cuenta me di;
pero cuando me despierte iré por otro trago».

if you are given to gluttony.
3 Do not crave his delicacies,(A)
for that food is deceptive.

do not trust your own cleverness.
5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,(B)
for they will surely sprout wings
and fly off to the sky like an eagle.(C)

7 for he is the kind of person

lying on top of the rigging.
35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up

6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
