Proverbs 22:1-5

22 ^(A)A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
    and favor is better than silver or gold.
²^(B)The rich and the poor meet together;
    the Lord is ^(C)the Maker of them all.
³^(D)The prudent sees danger and hides himself,
    but the simple go on and suffer for it.
⁴The reward for humility and fear of the Lord
    is ^(E)riches and honor and life.^[a]
⁵^(F)Thorns and snares are in the way of the crooked;
    whoever ^(G)guards his soul will keep far from them.

¹⁸for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you,
    if all of them are ready on your lips.
¹⁹That your trust may be in the Lord,
    I have made them known to you today, even to you.
²⁰Have I not written for you ^(E)thirty sayings
    of counsel and knowledge,

    that you may give a true answer to those who sent you?

¹²Therefore ^(A)lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, ¹³and ^(B)make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint ^(C)but rather be healed. ¹⁴^(D)Strive for peace with everyone, and for the ^(E)holiness ^(F)without which no one will see the Lord. ¹⁵See to it that no one ^(G)fails to obtain the grace of God; that no ^(H)“root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; ¹⁶that no one is ^(I)sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. ¹⁷For you know that ^(J)afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.

A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken

¹⁸For you have not come to ^(K)what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest ¹⁹and ^(L)the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words ^(M)made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them. ²⁰For they could not endure the order that was given, ^(N)“If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.” ²¹Indeed, ^(O)so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.” ²²But you have come to ^(P)Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, ^(Q)the heavenly Jerusalem, and to ^(R)innumerable angels in festal gathering, ²³and to ^(S)the assembly^[a] of the firstborn who are ^(T)enrolled in heaven, and to ^(U)God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, ²⁴and to Jesus, ^(V)the mediator of a new covenant, and to ^(W)the sprinkled blood ^(X)that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

²⁵See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For ^(Y)if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven. ²⁶At that time ^(Z)his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, ^(AA)“Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” ²⁷This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates ^(AB)the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. ²⁸Therefore let us be grateful for receiving ^(AC)a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus ^(AD)let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, ²⁹for our ^(AE)God is a consuming fire.
