Wine Is a Mocker

20 Wine (A)is a mocker,
Strong drink is a brawler,
And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

The [a]wrath of a king is like the roaring of a lion;
Whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own life.

(B)It is honorable for a man to stop striving,
Since any fool can start a quarrel.

(C)The lazy man will not plow because of winter;
(D)He will beg during harvest and have nothing.

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water,
But a man of understanding will draw it out.

Most men will proclaim each his own [b]goodness,
But who can find a faithful man?

(E)The righteous man walks in his integrity;
(F)His children are blessed after him.

A king who sits on the throne of judgment
Scatters all evil with his eyes.

(G)Who can say, “I have made my heart clean,
I am pure from my sin”?

10 (H)Diverse weights and diverse measures,
They are both alike, an abomination to the Lord.

11 Even a child is (I)known by his deeds,
Whether what he does is pure and right.

12 (J)The hearing ear and the seeing eye,
The Lord has made them both.

13 (K)Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty;
Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread.

14 It is [c]good for nothing,” cries the buyer;
But when he has gone his way, then he boasts.

15 There is gold and a multitude of rubies,
But (L)the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

16 (M)Take the garment of one who is surety for a stranger,
And hold it as a pledge when it is for a seductress.

17 (N)Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man,
But afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel.

18 (O)Plans are established by counsel;
(P)By wise counsel wage war.

19 (Q)He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets;
Therefore do not associate with one (R)who flatters with his lips.

20 (S)Whoever curses his father or his mother,
(T)His lamp will be put out in deep darkness.

21 (U)An inheritance gained hastily at the beginning
(V)Will not be blessed at the end.

22 (W)Do not say, “I will [d]recompense evil”;
(X)Wait for the Lord, and He will save you.

23 Diverse weights are an abomination to the Lord,
And dishonest scales are not good.

24 A man’s steps are of the Lord;
How then can a man understand his own way?

25 It is a snare for a man to devote rashly something as holy,
And afterward to reconsider his vows.

26 (Y)A wise king sifts out the wicked,
And brings the threshing wheel over them.

27 (Z)The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord,
Searching all the [e]inner depths of his heart.

28 (AA)Mercy and truth preserve the king,
And by [f]lovingkindness he upholds his throne.

29 The glory of young men is their strength,
And (AB)the splendor of old men is their gray head.

30 Blows that hurt cleanse away evil,
As do stripes the [g]inner depths of the heart.

Y cualquiera que por ello errare, no será sabio.

Como bramido de cachorro de león es el terror del rey:

El que lo hace enfurecerse, peca contra su alma.

Honra es del hombre dejarse de contienda:

Mas todo insensato se envolverá en ella.

El perezoso no ara á causa del invierno;

Pedirá pues en la siega, y no hallará.

Como aguas profundas es el consejo en el corazón del hombre:

Mas el hombre entendido lo alcanzará.

Muchos hombres publican cada uno su liberalidad:

Mas hombre de verdad, ¿quién lo hallará?

El justo que camina en su integridad,

Bienaventurados serán sus hijos después de él.

El rey que se sienta en el trono de juicio,

Con su mirar disipa todo mal.

¿Quién podrá decir: Yo he limpiado mi corazón,

Limpio estoy de mi pecado?

10 Doble pesa y doble medida,

Abominación son á Jehová ambas cosas.

11 Aun el muchacho es conocido por sus hechos,

Si su obra fuere limpia y recta.

12 El oído que oye, y el ojo que ve,

Ambas cosas ha igualmente hecho Jehová.

13 No ames el sueño, porque no te empobrezcas;

Abre tus ojos, y te hartarás de pan.

14 El que compra dice: Malo es, malo es:

Mas en apartándose, se alaba.

15 Hay oro y multitud de piedras preciosas:

Mas los labios sabios son vaso precioso.

16 Quítale su ropa al que salió por fiador del extraño;

Y tómale prenda al que fía la extraña.

17 Sabroso es al hombre el pan de mentira;

Mas después su boca será llena de cascajo.

18 Los pensamientos con el consejo se ordenan:

Y con industria se hace la guerra.

19 El que descubre el secreto, en chismes anda:

No te entrometas, pues, con el que lisonjea con sus labios.

20 El que maldice á su padre ó á su madre,

Su lámpara será apagada en oscuridad tenebrosa.

21 La herencia adquirida de priesa al principio,

Aun su postrimería no será bendita.

22 No digas, yo me vengaré;

Espera á Jehová, y él te salvará.

23 Abominación son á Jehová las pesas dobles;

Y el peso falso no es bueno.

24 De Jehová son los pasos del hombre:

¿Cómo pues entenderá el hombre su camino?

25 Lazo es al hombre el devorar lo santo,

Y andar pesquisando después de los votos.

26 El rey sabio esparce los impíos.

Y sobre ellos hace tornar la rueda.

27 Candela de Jehová es el alma del hombre,

Que escudriña lo secreto del vientre.

28 Misericordia y verdad guardan al rey;

Y con clemencia sustenta su trono.

29 La gloria de los jóvenes es su fortaleza,

Y la hermosura de los viejos la vejez.

30 Las señales de las heridas son medicina para lo malo:

Y las llagas llegan á lo más secreto del vientre.

    den som väcker hans vrede

(C) Heder åt den som avstår från gräl,
    dåren söker alltid strid.

(D) Den late plöjer inte om hösten,
    vid skördetiden söker han
        grödan förgäves.

(E) Planerna i en mans hjärta
        är som djupt vatten,
    men en man med förstånd
        hämtar upp dem.

Många ropar ut sin egen godhet,
    men vem finner någon att lita på?

(F) Den rättfärdige lever hederligt,
    lyckliga är hans barn efter honom.

Kungen som sitter på domarsätet
    rensar bort allt ont med sin blick.

(G) Vem kan säga:
    ”Jag har bevarat mitt hjärta rent,
        jag är fri från synd”?

10 (H) Två slags vikt och två slags mått,
    Herren avskyr bådadera.

11 (I) Redan den unge
        visar med sina gärningar
    om hans liv är rent och rätt.

12 (J) Örat som hör och ögat som ser,
    båda har Herren gjort.

13 (K) Älska inte sömn, då blir du fattig.
    Håll ögonen öppna,
        då får du bröd så det räcker.

14 ”Hutlöst, hutlöst”, säger köparen,
    sedan går han sin väg
        och skryter över sitt köp.

15 (L) Det finns guld och pärlor i mängd,
    men den dyrbaraste skatten
        är läppar med kunskap.

16 (M) Ta hans kläder[b] när han
        går i borgen för en främling,
    kräv pant när det gäller okända.

17 (N) Bröd man fått genom svek
        smakar gott,
    men sedan blir munnen full av grus.

18 (O) Planer efter rådslag får framgång,
    att föra krig kräver klok ledning.

19 (P) Skvallraren avslöjar hemligheter,
    ge dig inte i lag med pratmakare.

20 (Q) Den som förbannar sin far eller mor,
    hans lampa ska slockna
        i djupaste mörker.

21 (R) Ett arv[c] som man först
        girigt[d] tar över
    blir till sist utan välsignelse.

22 (S) Säg inte:
        ”Jag ska löna ont med ont!”
    Vänta på Herren,
        han ska hjälpa dig.

23 (T) Herren avskyr två slags vikter,
    falsk våg är inte rätt.

24 (U) Av Herren beror en mans steg,
    vad vet en människa om sin väg?

25 (V) Det är farligt för en människa
        att snabbt helga något
    och överväga löftena först efteråt.

26 En vis kung rensar bort de gudlösa,
    han kör tröskhjulet[e] över dem.

27 (W) Anden i människan
        är en Herrens lykta,
    den utforskar varje rum
        i hennes inre.

28 (X) Godhet och sanning
        skyddar kungen,
    genom nåden består hans tron.

29 (Y) De ungas stolthet är deras styrka,
    de gamlas ära är deras grå hår.

30 Sår som svider renar från ondska,
    slag renar hjärtats inre.

A king’s wrath strikes terror like the roar of a lion;(E)
    those who anger him forfeit their lives.(F)

It is to one’s honor to avoid strife,
    but every fool(G) is quick to quarrel.(H)

Sluggards(I) do not plow in season;
    so at harvest time they look but find nothing.(J)

The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters,(K)
    but one who has insight draws them out.

Many claim to have unfailing love,
    but a faithful person who can find?(L)

The righteous lead blameless lives;(M)
    blessed are their children after them.(N)

When a king sits on his throne to judge,(O)
    he winnows out all evil with his eyes.(P)

Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure;(Q)
    I am clean and without sin”?(R)

10 Differing weights and differing measures—
    the Lord detests them both.(S)

11 Even small children are known by their actions,
    so is their conduct really pure(T) and upright?

12 Ears that hear and eyes that see—
    the Lord has made them both.(U)

13 Do not love sleep or you will grow poor;(V)
    stay awake and you will have food to spare.

14 “It’s no good, it’s no good!” says the buyer—
    then goes off and boasts about the purchase.

15 Gold there is, and rubies in abundance,
    but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.

16 Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger;
    hold it in pledge(W) if it is done for an outsider.(X)

17 Food gained by fraud tastes sweet,(Y)
    but one ends up with a mouth full of gravel.(Z)

18 Plans are established by seeking advice;
    so if you wage war, obtain guidance.(AA)
