⁵ a wise person will listen and continue to learn,
and an understanding person will gain direction—

13 A wise son listens to his father’s discipline,
but a mocker does not listen to reprimands.

¹⁰ Arrogance produces only quarreling,
but those who take advice gain wisdom.

¹³ Whoever despises ⌞God’s⌟ words will pay the penalty,
but the one who fears ⌞God’s⌟ commands will be rewarded.

⁴ An evildoer pays attention to wicked lips.
A liar opens his ears to a slanderous tongue.

18 A loner is out to get what he wants for himself.
He opposes all sound reasoning.
² A fool does not find joy in understanding
but only in expressing his own opinion.

¹³ Whoever gives an answer before he listens is stupid and shameful.

⁵ A motive in the human heart is like deep water,
and a person who has understanding draws it out.
