⁴ Wealthy people are always finding more friends,
but the poor lose all theirs.

⁶ Many people ·want to please [^Lseek the face of] a leader,
and everyone is friends with those who give gifts.

⁷ Poor people’s relatives ·avoid [^Lhate] them;
    ·even [^Lhow much more do] their friends stay far away.
They run after them, begging,
    but they are gone.

² The rich and the poor ·are alike [have a common bond]
in that the Lord made them all.

⁷ The rich rule over the poor,
and borrowers are ·servants [slaves] to lenders.

⁴ Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich;
    be wise enough to ·control [stop] yourself.
⁵ ·Wealth can vanish in the wink of an eye [^LYour eye can fly to it and it will be gone].
    It can seem to grow wings
and fly away like an eagle.

⁷ When you are ·full [sated], not even honey tastes good,
but when you are hungry, even something bitter tastes sweet.

⁶ It is better to be poor and ·innocent [walk blamelessly]
than to be rich and ·wicked [^Lbe on crooked paths].

⁸ Some people get rich by ·overcharging others [^Linterest and surcharge; Ex. 22:25; Deut. 23:20],
but their wealth will be given to those who are ·kind [gracious] to the poor.

¹¹ Rich people may ·think they are wise [^Lbe wise in their own eyes],
but the poor with understanding will ·prove them wrong [see through them].

²⁰ A ·truthful [reliable] person will have many blessings,
but those ·eager to get rich [or with get-rich-quick schemes] will be punished.

²¹ It is not good ·for a judge to take sides [to show favoritism/partiality; ^Lto recognize faces],
but some will ·sin [transgress; do wrong] for only a piece of bread.

²² ·Selfish [Stingy] people are in a hurry to get rich
and do not ·realize [know] they soon will be poor.
