18 One who isolates himself pursues selfish desires;
he rebels against all sound wisdom.

A fool does not delight in understanding,
but only wants to show off his opinions.[a](A)

When a wicked person comes, contempt also comes,
and along with dishonor, derision.

The words of a person’s mouth are deep waters,(B)
a flowing river, a fountain of wisdom.[b]

It is not good to show partiality to the guilty,(C)
denying an innocent person justice.(D)

A fool’s lips lead to strife,
and his mouth provokes a beating.(E)

A fool’s mouth is his devastation,
and his lips are a trap for his life.(F)

A gossip’s words are like choice food

The one who is lazy in his work

10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower;(I)
the righteous run to it and are protected.[e](J)

11 The wealth of the rich is his fortified city;
in his imagination it is like a high wall.(K)

12 Before his downfall a person’s heart is proud,(L)
but humility comes before honor.(M)

13 The one who gives an answer before he listens—
this is foolishness and disgrace for him.(N)

14 A person’s spirit can endure sickness,
but who can survive a broken spirit?(O)

15 The mind of the discerning acquires knowledge,
and the ear of the wise seeks it.(P)

16 A person’s gift opens doors[f] for him
and brings him before the great.(Q)

17 The first to state his case seems right
until another comes and cross-examines him.(R)

18 Casting the lot(S) ends quarrels
and separates powerful opponents.

19 An offended brother is harder to reach[g]
than a fortified city,
and quarrels are like the bars of a fortress.

20 From the fruit of a person’s mouth his stomach is satisfied;

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,

18 Oni koji se odvajaju, paze da sebi ugode,
    ljute se kad im drugi daju savjete.

Budala ne želi ništa praktično naučiti,
    već samo svoje mišljenje izreći.

Tko čini zlo, bit će omražen.
    Tko postupa nečasno, bit će osramoćen.

Riječi mogu biti kao duboke vode,
    kao potok koji teče i izvor mudrosti.

Nije dobro biti pristran krivima
    jer se nedužnima uskraćuje pravda.

Budaline riječi započinju svađe
    i kao da njima traži batine.
Budala govorom sam sebe upropaštava,
    vlastitim riječima zamku si postavlja.

Riječi ogovarača su kao slatki zalogaji,
    o kako ih ljudi vole progutati.[a]

Tko je nemaran na poslu,
    brat je onome koji uništava.

10 BOŽJE ime je kao čvrsta kula
    kojoj pravednici trče i sigurnost nalaze.

11 Bogataš si o svojem bogatstvu umišlja
    da je utvrđeni grad s visokim zidinama.

12 Ohol čovjek brzo će propasti,
    a ponizan će čast primiti.

13 Tko odgovara prije nego što sasluša,
    čini glupost i sramoti se.

14 Vedar duh podiže čovjeka u bolesti,
    no ako je duh slomljen, nema mu pomoći.

15 Pametan um stječe znanje
    i uši mudrih traže znanje.

16 Dar čovjeku otvara vrata
    i pruža pristup velikanima.

17 Tko prvi iznese svoj slučaj,
    ispravnim se doima
    dok ga drugi ne ispita.

18 Korištenjem ždrijeba rješavaju se sporovi,
    čak i kad su u sukobu moćni protivnici.

19 Uvrijeđen brat jači je od utvrđenoga grada,
    a sporovi razdvajaju ljude kao vrata tvrđave.

20 Čovjek se hrani plodom usana;
    ono što govori, time će se nasititi.

21 Život i smrt u vlasti su jezika.
    Oni koji vole govoriti, snosit će odgovarajuće posljedice.

22 Tko je našao ženu, našao je dobro,
    BOŽJU je naklonost stekao.

23 Siromah ljubazno umoljava,
    a bogataš grubo odgovara.

24 Ima prijatelja koji se vole družiti,
    ali pravi je prijatelj od brata bliskiji.
