Proverbs 17:5

⁵Those who mock the poor insult their Maker;
those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be punished.

⁵Mocking the poor is mocking the God who made them. He will punish those who rejoice at others’ misfortunes.

¹¹Evil people are eager for rebellion,
but they will be severely punished.

¹¹The wicked live for rebellion; they shall be severely punished.^[a]

Proverbs 17:11 they shall be severely punished, literally, “a stern [ruthless] messenger will be sent against him.”

¹³If you repay good with evil,
evil will never leave your house.

¹³If you repay evil for good, a curse is upon your home.

²⁶It is wrong to punish the godly for being good
or to flog leaders for being honest.

²⁶How shortsighted to fine the godly for being good! And to punish nobles for being honest!
