17 Better a dry piece of bread with calm
    than a house full of food but also full of strife.

An intelligent slave will rule a shameful son
    and share the inheritance with the brothers.

The crucible [tests] silver, and the furnace [tests] gold,
    but the one who tests hearts is Adonai.

An evildoer heeds wicked lips;
    a liar listens to destructive talk.

He who mocks the poor insults his maker;
    he who rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished.

Grandchildren are the crown of the aged,
    while the glory of children is their ancestors.

Fine speech is unbecoming to a boor,
    and even less lying lips to a leader.

A bribe works like a charm, in the view of him who gives it —
    wherever it turns, it succeeds.

He who conceals an offense promotes love,
    but he who harps on it can separate even close friends.

10 A rebuke makes more impression on a person of understanding
    than a hundred blows on a fool.

11 An evil person seeks only rebellion,
    but a cruel messenger will be sent against him.

12 Rather meet a bear robbed of its cubs
    than encounter a fool in his folly.
13 Evil will not depart from the house
    of him who returns evil for good.

14 Starting a fight is like letting water through [a dike] —
    better stop the quarrel before it gets worse.

15 He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous —
    both alike are an abomination to Adonai.

16 Why would a fool wish to pay for wisdom
    when he has no desire to learn?

17 A friend shows his friendship at all times —
    it is for adversity that [such] a brother is born.

18 He who gives his hand to guarantee a loan
    for his neighbor lacks good sense.

19 Those who love quarreling love giving offense;
    those who make their gates tall are courting disaster.

20 A crooked-hearted person will find nothing good,
    and the perverse of speech will end in calamity.

21 He who fathers a fool does so to his sorrow,
    and the father of a boor has no joy.

22 A happy heart is good medicine,
    but low spirits sap one’s strength.

23 From under a cloak a bad man takes a bribe
    to pervert the course of justice.

24 The discerning person focuses on wisdom there before him,
    but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth.
25 A son who is a fool means anger for his father
    and bitterness for the mother who gave him birth.

26 To punish the innocent is not right,
    likewise to flog noble people for their uprightness.

27 A knowledgeable person controls his tongue;
    a discerning person controls his temper.

28 Even a fool, if he stays silent, is thought wise;
    he who keeps his mouth shut can pass for smart.

The Lord Tests Hearts

Excellent speech is not becoming to a fool,

Wherever he turns, he prospers.

But a broken spirit dries the bones.

To pervert the ways of justice.

24 (S)Wisdom is in the sight of him who has understanding,
But the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.

25 A (T)foolish son is a grief to his father,
And bitterness to her who bore him.

26 Also, to punish the righteous is not good,
Nor to strike princes for their uprightness.

27 (U)He who has knowledge spares his words,
And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.
28 (V)Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace;
When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.

17 Ang kaunting pagkain na pinagsasaluhan nang may kapayapaan ay higit na mabuti kaysa sa maraming pagkain ngunit may alitan.
Pamumunuan ng marunong na lingkod ang nakakahiyang anak ng kanyang amo at sa kanilang mamanahin makakabahagi pa ito.
Sinusubok ng Panginoon ang puso ng tao katulad ng pilak at ginto na sinusubok sa apoy kung ito ay tunay o hindi.
Ang taong masama ay gustong makinig sa kapwa niya masama, at ang taong sinungaling ay gustong makinig sa kapwa niya sinungaling.
Ang kumukutya sa mahihirap ay inaalipusta ang kanyang Manlilikha. Ang taong nagagalak sa kapahamakan ng iba ay parurusahan.
Karangalan ng mga loloʼt lola ang kanilang mga apo, gayon din naman, karangalan ng mga anak ang kanilang mga magulang.
Hindi bagay sa hangal ang magsalita ng mabuti, at lalong hindi bagay sa isang namumuno ang magsinungaling.
Sa tingin ng iba ang suhol ay parang salamangka na magagawa ang kahit anumang bagay.
Kung patatawarin mo ang kasalanan ng iyong kaibigan, mananatili ang inyong samahan, ngunit kung patuloy mong uungkatin ang kanyang kasalanan, masisira ang inyong pagkakaibigan.
10 Sa isang saway lang natututo ang taong may pang-unawa, ngunit ang taong mangmang ay hindi natututo hampasin mo man ng walang awa.
11 Laging naghahanap ng gulo ang taong masama, kaya ipapadala laban sa kanya ang isang taong malupit na magpaparusa sa kanya.
12 Mas mabuti pang masalubong mo ang isang osong inagawan ng anak kaysa sa hangal na gumagawa ng kahangalan.
13 Kapag kasamaan ang iginanti mo sa kabutihang ginawa sa iyo, palaging may masamang mangyayari sa sambahayan mo.
14 Ang simula ng away ay katulad ng butas sa isang dike, kailangang tapalan bago lumaki.
15 Kasuklam-suklam sa Panginoon ang taong nagpaparusa sa taong walang kasalanan o nagpapalaya sa taong may kasalanan.
16 Walang kabuluhang pag-aralin ang taong hangal sapagkat hindi naman niya hinahangad ang matuto.
17 Ang kaibigan ay nagmamahal sa lahat ng panahon, at nagkaroon tayo ng kapatid upang sa kagipitan ay tumulong.
18 Ang taong nangakong managot sa utang ng iba ay kulang sa karunungan.
19 Ang taong gusto ng kasalanan ay gusto rin ng kaguluhan. At ang taong mayabang ay naghahanap ng kapahamakan.
20 Hindi uunlad ang taong baluktot ang pag-iisip, at ang taong sinungaling ay dadanas ng kasawian.
21 Ang anak na hangal ay nagdudulot ng kalungkutan at kabiguan sa magulang.
22 Ang pagiging masayahin ay parang gamot na nakabubuti sa katawan, ngunit ang pagiging malungkutin ay nagpapahina ng katawan.
23 Ang taong masama ay tumatanggap ng suhol upang ipagkait ang makatarungang hatol.
24 Ang taong may pang-unawa ay naghahangad pa ng karunungan; ngunit ang isip ng mangmang ay pagala-gala.
25 Ang anak na hangal ay nagdudulot ng kapaitan at kalungkutan sa kanyang mga magulang.
26 Hindi mabuti na parusahan ang taong matuwid o ang taong marangal.
27 Ang taong marunong at nakakaunawa ay maingat magsalita at hindi padalos-dalos.
28 Kahit ang mangmang ay parang marunong at nakakaunawa kapag tahimik.
