Spreuken van Salomo (vervolg)

14 Als een vrouw wijs is, gaat het door haar wijsheid goed met haar gezin.
Maar een dwaze vrouw doet haar gezin veel kwaad door haar dwaasheid.

Goede mensen hebben diep ontzag voor de Heer.
Maar slechte mensen vinden Hem volkomen onbelangrijk.

Dwaze mensen moeten de gevolgen dragen van hun eigen dwaze woorden.
Maar wijze mensen worden beschermd door wat ze zeggen.

Als je geen os hebt, blijft de voerbak schoon.
Maar als je een grote oogst wil hebben,
zul je een os moeten hebben om voor je te werken.

Een betrouwbare getuige spreekt de waarheid.
Maar een onbetrouwbare getuige liegt alleen maar.

Mensen die zich nergens iets van aantrekken, zoeken tevergeefs naar wijsheid.
Maar verstandige mensen kunnen gemakkelijk wijsheid vinden.

Blijf uit de buurt van een dwaas.
Want je zal uit zijn mond nooit een verstandig woord horen.

Een verstandig mens probeert te vinden hoe hij leven moet.
Maar een dwaas ziet niet dat hij zichzelf voor de gek houdt.

Dwaze mensen zullen nooit toegeven dat ze verkeerde dingen doen.
Maar goede mensen zijn welwillend.

10 Alleen je eigen hart voelt je verdriet volledig.
En een ander mens kan ook nooit werkelijk begrijpen hoe blij je bent.

11 De familie van slechte mensen zal niet blijven bestaan.
Maar met eerlijke mensen zal het goed gaan.

12 Soms denk je dat je op de goede weg bent,
terwijl die weg uiteindelijk bij de dood uitkomt.

13 Iemand die lacht, kan tegelijkertijd toch verdrietig zijn.
Na de vrolijkheid blijft dan het verdriet over.

14 Slechte mensen krijgen de gevolgen van hun daden.
Maar goede mensen ook!

15 Onverstandige mensen geloven alles wat er wordt gezegd.
Maar verstandige mensen denken zelf goed na bij wat ze doen.

16 Wijze mensen zorgen dat ze ver bij het kwaad vandaan blijven.
Maar dwaze mensen doen zorgeloos waar ze zin in hebben en zien het kwaad niet.

17 Als je gauw boos bent, doe je in je boosheid domme dingen.
Als je slechte dingen doet, zul je worden gehaat.

18 Onverstandige mensen worden alleen maar steeds dwazer.
Maar verstandige mensen worden steeds wijzer.

19 De slechte mensen zullen uiteindelijk buigen voor de goede mensen.
Ze zullen bij hen op de deur kloppen en smeken om hulp.

20 Arme mensen worden zelfs door hun buren gehaat.
Maar rijke mensen hebben veel vrienden.

21 Als je je medemens minacht, doe je verkeerd tegen God.
Maar het zal heerlijk voor je zijn als je mensen in nood helpt.

22 Met mensen die slechte dingen doen, loopt het uiteindelijk slecht af.
Maar mensen die goed doen, zullen liefde en trouw krijgen.

23 Als je hard werkt, levert dat altijd iets op.
Maar als je alleen mooie praatjes hebt, word je arm.

24 De rijkdom van wijze mensen is hun wijsheid.
Dwaze mensen bezitten alleen maar hun dwaasheid.

25 De woorden van een betrouwbaar getuige kunnen levens redden.
Maar een leugenaar zorgt voor bedrog.

26 Als je diep ontzag voor de Heer hebt, kun je gerust zijn.
Gods kinderen zullen bij Hem veilig zijn.

27 Diep ontzag voor de Heer is een bron van leven.
Daarmee kun je ontsnappen aan de valstrikken van de dood.

28 De koning van een groot volk is een machtig koning.
Maar als hij weinig onderdanen heeft, is het met zijn macht gedaan.

29 Geduld is een teken van wijsheid.
Iemand die snel kwaad wordt, laat daarmee zien dat hij een dwaas is.

30 Een vriendelijk en vergevend hart houdt je gezond.
Maar jaloersheid vreet je helemaal op.

31 Als je slecht bent voor arme mensen, beledig je hun Maker.
Maar als je medelijden hebt en hen helpt, eer je Hem.

32 Met slechte mensen loopt het door hun eigen slechtheid slecht af.
Maar een goed mens weet dat hij veilig is, zelfs als de dood komt.

33 In het hart van verstandige mensen woont wijsheid.
Maar dwaze mensen vertellen alles wat ze denken.

34 Een rechtvaardig volk wordt geëerd.
Maar als een volk onrechtvaardig is, is dat een schande.

35 Een goede dienaar wordt door zijn koning beloond.
Maar een dienaar die slecht werk levert, wordt door zijn heer gestraft.

The Ways of Life and Death

14 The wise woman builds her house,
But the foolish pulls it down with her hands.

He who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord,
(A)But he who is perverse in his ways despises Him.

In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride,
(B)But the lips of the wise will preserve them.

Where no oxen are, the [a]trough is clean;
But much increase comes by the strength of an ox.

A (C)faithful witness does not lie,
But a false witness will utter (D)lies.

A scoffer seeks wisdom and does not find it,
But (E)knowledge is easy to him who understands.
Go from the presence of a foolish man,
When you do not perceive in him the lips of (F)knowledge.
The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way,
But the folly of fools is deceit.

(G)Fools mock at [b]sin,
But among the upright there is favor.

10 The heart knows its own bitterness,
And a stranger does not share its joy.

11 (H)The house of the wicked will be overthrown,
But the tent of the upright will flourish.

12 (I)There is a way that seems right to a man,
But (J)its end is the way of (K)death.

13 Even in laughter the heart may sorrow,
And (L)the end of mirth may be grief.

14 The backslider in heart will be (M)filled with his own ways,
But a good man will be satisfied [c]from (N)above.

15 The simple believes every word,
But the prudent considers well his steps.
16 (O)A wise man fears and departs from evil,
But a fool rages and is self-confident.
17 A quick-tempered man acts foolishly,
And a man of wicked intentions is hated.
18 The simple inherit folly,
But the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
19 The evil will bow before the good,
And the wicked at the gates of the righteous.

20 (P)The poor man is hated even by his own neighbor,
But [d]the rich has many (Q)friends.
21 He who despises his neighbor sins;
(R)But he who has mercy on the poor, happy is he.

22 Do they not go astray who devise evil?
But mercy and truth belong to those who devise good.

23 In all labor there is profit,
But [e]idle chatter leads only to poverty.

24 The crown of the wise is their riches,
But the foolishness of fools is folly.

25 A true witness [f]delivers (S)souls,
But a deceitful witness speaks lies.

26 In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence,
And His children will have a place of refuge.
27 (T)The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,
To turn one away from the snares of death.

28 In a multitude of people is a king’s honor,
But in the lack of people is the downfall of a prince.

29 (U)He who is slow to wrath has great understanding,
But he who is [g]impulsive exalts folly.

30 A sound heart is life to the body,
But (V)envy is (W)rottenness to the bones.

31 (X)He who oppresses the poor reproaches (Y)his Maker,
But he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.

32 The wicked is banished in his wickedness,
But (Z)the righteous has a refuge in his death.

33 Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding,
But (AA)what is in the heart of fools is made known.

34 Righteousness exalts a (AB)nation,
But sin is a [h]reproach to any people.

35 (AC)The king’s favor is toward a wise servant,
But his wrath is against him who causes shame.

15 The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.

16 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.

17 He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.

18 The simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

19 The evil bow before the good; and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.

20 The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends.

21 He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.

22 Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.

23 In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.

24 The crown of the wise is their riches: but the foolishness of fools is folly.

25 A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.

26 In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

32 The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.

33 Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known.

35 The king's favour is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causeth shame.

An honest witness does not deceive,

The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none,
    but knowledge comes easily to the discerning.(F)

Stay away from a fool,
    for you will not find knowledge on their lips.

The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways,(G)
    but the folly of fools is deception.(H)

    but goodwill is found among the upright.

19 Evildoers will bow down in the presence of the good,
    and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.(V)

20 The poor are shunned even by their neighbors,
    but the rich have many friends.(W)

21 It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor,(X)
    but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.(Y)

22 Do not those who plot evil go astray?(Z)
    But those who plan what is good find[a] love and faithfulness.

23 All hard work brings a profit,
    but mere talk leads only to poverty.

24 The wealth of the wise is their crown,
    but the folly of fools yields folly.(AA)

25 A truthful witness saves lives,
    but a false witness is deceitful.(AB)

26 Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress,(AC)
    and for their children it will be a refuge.(AD)

27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,(AE)

28 A large population is a king’s glory,
    but without subjects a prince is ruined.(AG)

29 Whoever is patient has great understanding,(AH)
    but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.(AI)

30 A heart at peace gives life to the body,

31 Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker,(AK)

32 When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down,(AM)
