Proverbs 13:1-16

Wisdom Loves Righteousness

13 A wise son heeds his father’s instruction,
^(A)But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.

²^(B)A man shall eat well by the fruit of his mouth,
But the soul of the unfaithful feeds on violence.
³^(C)He who guards his mouth preserves his life,
But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.

⁴^(D)The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing;
But the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.

⁵A righteous man hates lying,
But a wicked man is loathsome and comes to shame.
⁶^(E)Righteousness guards him whose way is blameless,
But wickedness overthrows the sinner.

⁷^(F)There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing;
And one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches.

⁸The ransom of a man’s life is his riches,
But the poor does not hear rebuke.

⁹The light of the righteous rejoices,
^(G)But the lamp of the wicked will be put out.

¹⁰By pride comes nothing but ^(H)strife,
But with the well-advised is wisdom.

¹¹^(I)Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished,
But he who gathers by labor will increase.

¹²Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
But ^(J)when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.

¹³He who ^(K)despises the word will be destroyed,
But he who fears the commandment will be rewarded.
¹⁴^(L)The law of the wise is a fountain of life,
To turn one away from ^(M)the snares of death.

¹⁵Good understanding ^[a]gains ^(N)favor,
But the way of the unfaithful is hard.
¹⁶^(O)Every prudent man acts with knowledge,
But a fool lays open his folly.

The Outworking of Love

¹⁸My little children, ^(F)let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. ¹⁹And by this we ^[b]know ^(G)that we are of the truth, and shall ^[c]assure our hearts before Him. ²⁰^(H)For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. ²¹Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, ^(I)we have confidence toward God. ²²And ^(J)whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments ^(K)and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. ²³And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ ^(L)and love one another, as He gave ^[d]us commandment.

The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error

²⁴Now ^(M)he who keeps His commandments ^(N)abides in Him, and He in him. And ^(O)by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

Love for God and One Another

4 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but ^(A)test the spirits, whether they are of God; because ^(B)many false prophets have gone out into the world. ²By this you know the Spirit of God: ^(C)Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, ³and every spirit that does not confess ^[a]that Jesus ^[b]Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.

⁴You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than ^(D)he who is in the world. ⁵^(E)They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and ^(F)the world hears them. ⁶We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. ^(G)By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Knowing God Through Love^(H)

⁷^(I)Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who ^(J)loves is born of God and knows God. ⁸He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. ⁹^(K)In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten ^(L)Son into the world, that we might live through Him. ¹⁰In this is love, ^(M)not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son ^(N)to be the propitiation for our sins.
