Proverbs 11

11 ^(A)A false balance is an abomination to the Lord,
    ^(B)but a just weight is his delight.
²^(C)When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
    but with ^(D)the humble is wisdom.
³^(E)The integrity of the upright guides them,
    ^(F)but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.
⁴^(G)Riches do not profit in the day of wrath,
    ^(H)but righteousness delivers from death.
⁵The righteousness of the blameless ^(I)keeps his way straight,
    but the wicked falls by his own wickedness.
⁶^(J)The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
    but the treacherous ^(K)are taken captive by their lust.
⁷When the wicked dies, his ^(L)hope will perish,
    and ^(M)the expectation of wealth^[a] perishes too.
⁸^(N)The righteous is delivered from trouble,
    and the wicked walks into it instead.
⁹With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor,
    but by knowledge the righteous are delivered.
¹⁰^(O)When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices,
    and when the wicked perish there are shouts of gladness.
¹¹By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,
    but ^(P)by the mouth of the wicked ^(Q)it is overthrown.
¹²Whoever ^(R)belittles his neighbor lacks sense,
    but a man of understanding remains silent.
¹³Whoever ^(S)goes about slandering reveals secrets,
    but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered.
¹⁴Where there is ^(T)no guidance, a people falls,
    ^(U)but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.
¹⁵^(V)Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer harm,
    but he who hates striking hands in pledge is secure.
¹⁶^(W)A gracious woman gets honor,
    and ^(X)violent men get riches.
¹⁷^(Y)A man who is kind benefits himself,
    but a cruel man hurts himself.
¹⁸The wicked earns deceptive wages,
    but one who ^(Z)sows righteousness gets a sure reward.
¹⁹Whoever is steadfast in righteousness ^(AA)will live,
    but ^(AB)he who pursues evil will die.
²⁰Those of ^(AC)crooked heart are ^(AD)an abomination to the Lord,
    but those of ^(AE)blameless ways are ^(AF)his delight.
²¹^(AG)Be assured, ^(AH)an evil person will not go unpunished,
    but ^(AI)the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.
²²Like ^(AJ)a gold ring in a pig's snout
    is a beautiful woman without discretion.
²³The desire of the righteous ends only in good,
    ^(AK)the expectation of the wicked in wrath.
²⁴^(AL)One gives ^(AM)freely, yet grows all the richer;
    another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.
²⁵^(AN)Whoever brings blessing ^(AO)will be enriched,
    and ^(AP)one who waters will himself be watered.
²⁶^(AQ)The people curse him who holds back grain,
    but ^(AR)a blessing is on the head of him who ^(AS)sells it.
²⁷Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favor,^[b]
    but evil comes to ^(AT)him who searches for it.
²⁸Whoever ^(AU)trusts in his riches will fall,
    but the righteous will ^(AV)flourish like a green leaf.
²⁹Whoever ^(AW)troubles his own household will ^(AX)inherit the wind,
    and the fool will be servant to the wise of heart.
³⁰The fruit of the righteous is ^(AY)a tree of life,
    and whoever ^(AZ)captures souls is wise.
³¹If ^(BA)the righteous is repaid on earth,
    how much more the wicked and the sinner!

The Redemption of Israel

27 In that day the Lord with his hard and great and strong ^(A)sword will punish ^(B)Leviathan the fleeing serpent, ^(C)Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay ^(D)the dragon that is in the sea.

²In that day,
^(E)“A pleasant vineyard,^[a] ^(F)sing of it!
³    I, the Lord, am its keeper;
    every moment I water it.
    Lest anyone punish it,
I keep it night and day;
⁴    I have no wrath.
^(G)Would that I had thorns and briers to battle!
    I would march against them,
    I would burn them up together.
⁵Or let them lay hold of my protection,
    let them make peace with me,
    let them make peace with me.”

⁶^(H)In days to come^[b] Jacob shall take root,
Israel shall blossom and put forth shoots
and fill the whole world with fruit.

⁷^(I)Has he struck them ^(J)as he struck those who struck them?
    Or have they been slain ^(K)as their slayers were slain?
⁸^(L)Measure by measure,^[c] by exile you contended with them;
    ^(M)he removed them with his fierce breath^[d] in the day of the east wind.
⁹Therefore by this ^(N)the guilt of Jacob will be atoned for,
    and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin:^[e]
^(O)when he makes all the stones of the altars
    like chalkstones crushed to pieces,
    no ^(P)Asherim or incense altars will remain standing.
¹⁰^(Q)For the fortified city is solitary,
    a habitation deserted and forsaken, like the wilderness;
there the calf grazes;
    there it lies down and strips its branches.
¹¹When its boughs are dry, they are broken;
    women come and make a fire of them.
^(R)For this is a people without discernment;
    therefore he who made them will not have compassion on them;
    he who formed them will show them no favor.

¹²In that day ^(S)from the river Euphrates^[f] to the Brook of Egypt the Lord will thresh out the grain, and you will be gleaned one by one, O people of Israel. ¹³And in that day ^(T)a great trumpet will be blown, ^(U)and those who were lost in the land of Assyria and those who were driven out to the land of Egypt ^(V)will come and worship the Lord on the holy mountain at Jerusalem.

The Lord Has Drawn His Sword

21 ^[a] The word of the Lord came to me: ²^(A)“Son of man, ^(B)set your face toward Jerusalem and ^(C)preach against the sanctuaries.^[b] Prophesy against the land of Israel ³and say to the land of Israel, Thus says the Lord: ^(D)Behold, I am against you and will draw ^(E)my sword from its sheath and ^(F)will cut off from you both righteous and wicked. ⁴Because I will cut off from you both righteous and wicked, therefore my sword shall be drawn from its sheath against all flesh from south to north. ⁵^(G)And all flesh shall know that I am the Lord. I have drawn ^(H)my sword from its sheath; ^(I)it shall not be sheathed again.

⁶“As for you, son of man, ^(J)groan; with breaking heart and bitter grief, ^(K)groan before their eyes. ⁷^(L)And when they say to you, ‘Why do you groan?’ you shall say, ‘Because of the news ^(M)that it is coming. ^(N)Every heart will melt, and ^(O)all hands will be feeble; every spirit will faint, and ^(P)all knees will be weak as water. ^(Q)Behold, it is ^(R)coming, and it will be fulfilled,’” declares the Lord God.

⁸And the word of the Lord came to me: ⁹^(S)“Son of man, prophesy and say, Thus says the Lord, say:

^(T)“A sword, a sword is sharpened
and also polished,
¹⁰^(U)sharpened for slaughter,
^(V)polished to flash like lightning!

(Or ^(W)shall we rejoice? You have despised the rod, my son, ^(X)with everything of wood.)^[c] ¹¹So the sword is given to be polished, that it may be grasped in the hand. It is sharpened and polished ^(Y)to be given into the hand of the slayer. ¹²^(Z)Cry out and wail, son of man, for it is against my people. It is against all the princes of Israel. They are delivered over to the sword with my people. ^(AA)Strike therefore upon your thigh. ¹³For it will not be a testing—what could it do if you despise ^(AB)the rod?”^[d] declares the Lord God.

¹⁴“As for you, ^(AC)son of man, prophesy. ^(AD)Clap your hands and let the sword come down twice, ^(AE)yes, three times,^[e] the sword for those to be slain. It is the sword for the great slaughter, which surrounds them, ¹⁵that their hearts may melt, and many stumble.^[f] At all their gates I have given the glittering sword. Ah, it is made like lightning; ^(AF)it is taken up^[g] for slaughter. ¹⁶Cut sharply to the right; set yourself to the left, wherever your face is directed. ¹⁷I also will ^(AG)clap my hands, ^(AH)and I will satisfy my fury; ^(AI)I the Lord have spoken.”

¹⁸The word of the Lord came to me again: ¹⁹“As for you, son of man, mark two ways for ^(AJ)the sword of the king of Babylon to come. Both of them shall come from the same land. And make ^(AK)a signpost; make it ^(AL)at the head of the way to a city. ²⁰Mark a way ^(AM)for the sword to come to Rabbah of the Ammonites and to Judah, into Jerusalem the fortified. ²¹For the king of Babylon stands ^(AN)at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination. He shakes the arrows; he consults ^(AO)the teraphim;^[h] he looks at the liver. ²²Into his right hand comes the divination for Jerusalem, ^(AP)to set battering rams, to open the mouth with murder, to lift up the voice with shouting, to set battering rams against the gates, ^(AQ)to cast up mounds, to build siege towers. ²³But to them it will seem like a false divination. ^(AR)They have sworn solemn oaths, but he brings their guilt to remembrance, ^(AS)that they may be taken.

²⁴“Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have made your guilt to be remembered, in that your transgressions are uncovered, so that in all your deeds your sins appear—because you have come to remembrance, ^(AT)you shall be taken in hand. ²⁵And you, O profane^[i] ^(AU)wicked one, prince of Israel, ^(AV)whose day has come, ^(AW)the time of your final punishment, ²⁶thus says the Lord God: Remove the turban and take off the crown. Things shall not remain as they are. ^(AX)Exalt that which is low, and bring low that which is exalted. ²⁷A ruin, ruin, ruin I will make it. ^(AY)This also shall not be, ^(AZ)until he comes, the one to whom judgment belongs, and I will give it to him.

²⁸“And you, ^(BA)son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord God ^(BB)concerning the Ammonites and concerning their reproach; say, ^(BC)A sword, a sword ^(BD)is drawn for the slaughter. ^(BE)It is polished to consume and to flash like lightning— ²⁹while ^(BF)they see for you false visions, while they divine lies for you—to place you on the necks of the profane wicked, ^(BG)whose day has come, the time of their final punishment. ³⁰^(BH)Return it to its sheath. In the place where you were created, in the land of your origin, ^(BI)I will judge you. ³¹And ^(BJ)I will pour out my indignation upon you; ^(BK)I will blow upon you with the fire of my wrath, and I will deliver you into the hands of ^(BL)brutish men, skillful to destroy. ³²You shall be fuel for the fire. Your blood shall be in the midst of the land. ^(BM)You shall be no more remembered, ^(BN)for I the Lord have spoken.”
