²Tainted wealth has no lasting value,
but right living can save your life.

²The treasure of the wicked won’t profit them,
but righteousness rescues people from death.

¹¹Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears;
wealth from hard work grows over time.

¹¹Riches gotten quickly^[a] will dwindle,
but those who acquire them gradually become wealthy.

¹⁷Stolen bread tastes sweet,
but it turns to gravel in the mouth.

¹⁷Stolen bread is sweet,
but afterward the mouth is full of gravel.

²¹An inheritance obtained too early in life
is not a blessing in the end.

²¹Inheritance gained quickly at first
won’t bless later on.
