but anyone who holds his tongue is prudent.

²³A prudent man keeps what he knows to himself,^[a]
but the hearts of fools shout forth their foolishness.

³Anyone who guards his words protects his life;
anyone who talks too much^[a] is ruined.

²⁸Even a fool is thought to be wise when he remains silent;
he is thought to be prudent when he keeps his mouth shut.

¹³Whoever answers before listening
is both foolish and shameful.

²³Whoever watches his mouth and tongue
