The Beginning of Knowledge

1 The ^(A)proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

²To know wisdom and instruction,
To ^[a]perceive the words of understanding,
³To receive the instruction of wisdom,
Justice, judgment, and equity;
⁴To give prudence to the ^(B)simple,
To the young man knowledge and discretion—
⁵^(C)A wise man will hear and increase learning,
And a man of understanding will ^[b]attain wise counsel,
⁶To understand a proverb and an enigma,
The words of the wise and their ^(D)riddles.

⁷^(E)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Not Ashamed of the Gospel

⁸^(A)Therefore do not be ashamed of ^(B)the testimony of our Lord, nor of me ^(C)His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, ⁹who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, ^(D)not according to our works, but ^(E)according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus ^(F)before time began, ¹⁰but ^(G)has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, ¹¹^(H)to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher ^[a]of the Gentiles. ¹²For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, ^(I)for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.

Be Loyal to the Faith

¹³^(J)Hold fast ^(K)the pattern of ^(L)sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. ¹⁴That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

¹⁵This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. ¹⁶The Lord grant mercy to the ^(M)household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; ¹⁷but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me. ¹⁸The Lord ^(N)grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord ^(O)in that Day—and you know very well how many ways he ^(P)ministered ^[b]to me at Ephesus.
