Proverbs 5
King James Version
5 My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:
2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.
3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:
4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.
6 Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them.
7 Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.
8 Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:
9 Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel:
10 Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;
11 And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,
12 And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;
13 And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!
14 I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.
15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.
16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.
17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee.
18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.
20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?
21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he pondereth all his goings.
22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.
23 He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

5 My son, be attentive to my wisdom,
incline your ear to my understanding;
2 that you may keep discretion,
and your lips may guard knowledge.
3 For the lips of a loose woman drip honey,
and her speech[a] is smoother than oil;
4 but in the end she is bitter as wormwood,
sharp as a two-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death;
her steps follow the path to[b] Sheol;
6 she does not take heed to[c] the path of life;
her ways wander, and she does not know it.
7 And now, O sons, listen to me,
and do not depart from the words of my mouth.
8 Keep your way far from her,
and do not go near the door of her house;
9 lest you give your honor to others
and your years to the merciless;
10 lest strangers take their fill of your strength,[d]
and your labors go to the house of an alien;
11 and at the end of your life you groan,
when your flesh and body are consumed,
12 and you say, “How I hated discipline,
and my heart despised reproof!
13 I did not listen to the voice of my teachers
or incline my ear to my instructors.
14 I was at the point of utter ruin
in the assembled congregation.”
15 Drink water from your own cistern,
flowing water from your own well.
16 Should your springs be scattered abroad,
streams of water in the streets?
17 Let them be for yourself alone,
and not for strangers with you.
18 Let your fountain be blessed,
and rejoice in the wife of your youth,
19 a lovely hind, a graceful doe.
Let her affection fill you at all times with delight,
be infatuated always with her love.
20 Why should you be infatuated, my son, with a loose woman
and embrace the bosom of an adventuress?
21 For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the Lord,
and he watches[e] all his paths.
22 The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him,
and he is caught in the toils of his sin.
23 He dies for lack of discipline,
and because of his great folly he is lost.

2 til þess að þú megir varðveita mannvit og varir þínar geymi þekkingu.
3 Því að hunangsseimur drýpur af vörum lauslátrar konu, og gómur hennar er hálli en olía.
4 En að síðustu er hún beiskari en malurt, beitt eins og tvíeggjað sverð.
5 Fætur hennar ganga niður til dauðans, spor hennar liggja til Heljar.
6 Til þess að hún hitti ekki leið lífsins, eru brautir hennar á reiki, og hún veit ekki hvert hún fer.
7 Heyrið mig því, synir, og víkið eigi frá orðum munns míns.
8 Legg leið þína langt frá henni og kom þú ekki nálægt húsdyrum hennar,
9 svo að þú gefir ekki öðrum æskublóma þinn og ár þín grimmum manni,
10 svo að útlendir menn mettist ekki af eigum þínum og aflafé þitt lendi ekki í annarlegu húsi,
11 og þú andvarpir að lokum, þá er líkami þinn og hold veslast upp,
12 og segir: "Hversu hefi ég hatað aga og hjarta mitt fyrirlitið umvöndun!
13 að ég skyldi ekki hlýða raustu kennara minna og hneigja eyra mitt til þeirra, er fræddu mig!
14 Við sjálft lá, að ég hefði ratað í mestu ógæfu á miðju dómþingi safnaðarins."
15 Drekk þú vatn úr vatnsþró þinni og rennandi vatn úr brunni þínum.
16 Eiga lindir þínar að flóa út á götuna, lækir þínir út á torgin?
17 Þér einum skulu þær tilheyra og engum óviðkomandi með þér.
18 Uppspretta þín sé blessuð, og gleð þig yfir festarmey æsku þinnar,
19 elsku-hindinni, yndis-gemsunni. Brjóst hennar gjöri þig ætíð drukkinn, og ást hennar fjötri þig ævinlega.
20 En hví skyldir þú, son minn, láta léttúðarkonu töfra þig, og faðma barm lauslátrar konu?
21 Því að vegir sérhvers manns blasa við Drottni, og allar brautir hans gjörir hann sléttar.
22 Misgjörðir hins óguðlega fanga hann, og hann verður veiddur í snörur synda sinna.
23 Hann mun deyja vegna skorts á aga og kollsteypast vegna sinnar miklu heimsku.

2 ut custodias cogitationes, et disciplinam labia tua conservent. Ne attendas fallaciae mulieris;
3 favus enim distillans labia meretricis, et nitidius oleo guttur ejus:
4 novissima autem illius amara quasi absinthium, et acuta quasi gladius biceps.
5 Pedes ejus descendunt in mortem, et ad inferos gressus illius penetrant.
6 Per semitam vitae non ambulant; vagi sunt gressus ejus et investigabiles.
7 Nunc ergo fili mi, audi me, et ne recedas a verbis oris mei.
8 Longe fac ab ea viam tuam, et ne appropinques foribus domus ejus.
9 Ne des alienis honorem tuum, et annos tuos crudeli:
