On Life and Conduct
23 When you sit down to dine with a ruler,
Consider carefully [a]what is before you,
2 And put a knife to your throat
If you are a (A)person of great appetite.
3 Do not (B)desire his delicacies,
For it is deceptive food.
4 (C)Do not weary yourself to gain wealth;
[b](D)Stop dwelling on it.
5 [c]When you set your eyes on it, it is gone.
For (E)wealth certainly makes itself wings
Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.
6 (F)Do not eat the bread of [d]a (G)selfish person;
Or desire his delicacies;
7 For as he [e]thinks within himself, so he is.
He says to you, “Eat and drink!”
But (H)his heart is not with you.
8 You will (I)vomit up [f]the morsel you have eaten
And waste your [g]compliments.
10 Do not move the ancient boundary
Or (L)go into the fields of the fatherless,
11 For their (M)Redeemer is strong;
(N)He will plead their case against you.
12 Apply your heart to discipline,
And your ears to words of knowledge.
13 (O)Do not withhold discipline from a child;
Though you strike him with the rod, he will not die.
14 You shall strike him with the rod
And (P)rescue his soul from Sheol.
15 My son, if your heart is (Q)wise,
My own heart also will be glad,
16 And my [i]innermost being will rejoice
When your lips speak (R)what is right.
17 (S)Do not let your heart envy sinners,
But live in [j]the (T)fear of the Lord [k]always.
18 Certainly there is a [l](U)future,
And your (V)hope will not be cut off.
19 Listen, my son, and (W)be wise,
And (X)direct your heart in the way.
20 Do not be with (Y)heavy drinkers of wine,
Or with (Z)gluttonous eaters of meat;
21 For the (AA)heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty,
And (AB)drowsiness will clothe one with rags.
22 (AC)Listen to your father, who fathered you,
And (AD)do not despise your mother when she is old.
23 (AE)Buy truth, and do not sell it,
Get wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice,
And (AF)he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.
25 Let your (AG)father and your mother be glad,
And let her rejoice who gave birth to you.
26 (AH)Give me your heart, my son,
And let your eyes [m](AI)delight in my ways.
27 For a prostitute is a (AJ)deep pit,
And a [n](AK)strange woman is a narrow well.
28 Certainly she (AL)lurks as a robber,
And increases the treacherous among mankind.
29 Who has (AM)woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has contentions? Who has complaining?
Who has wounds without cause?
Who has red eyes?
30 Those who (AN)linger long over wine,
Those who go to [o]taste (AO)mixed wine.
31 Do not look at wine when it is red,
When it [p]sparkles in the cup,
When it (AP)goes down smoothly;
32 In the end it (AQ)bites like a snake
And stings like a (AR)viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange things
And your [q]mind will (AS)say perverse things.
34 And you will be like one who lies down in the [r]middle of the sea,
Or like one who lies down on the top of a [s]mast.
35 “They (AT)struck me, but I did not become [t]ill;
They beat me, but I did not know it.
When will I awake?
I will (AU)seek [u]another drink.”

On Life and Conduct
23 When you sit down to dine with a ruler,
Consider carefully what is [set] before you;
2
For you will put a knife to your throat
If you are a man of great appetite.
3
Do not desire his delicacies,
For it is deceptive food [offered to you with questionable motives].
4
Do not weary yourself [with the overwhelming desire] to gain wealth;
Cease from your own understanding of it.(A)
5
When you set your eyes on wealth, it is [suddenly] gone.
For wealth certainly makes itself wings
Like an eagle that flies to the heavens.
6
Do not eat the bread of a selfish man,
Or desire his delicacies;
7
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he [in behavior—one who manipulates].
He says to you, “Eat and drink,”
Yet his heart is not with you [but it is begrudging the cost].
8
The morsel which you have eaten you will vomit up,
And you will waste your compliments.
9
Do not speak in the ears of a fool,
For he will despise the [godly] wisdom of your words.(B)
10
Do not move the ancient landmark [at the boundary of the property]
And do not go into the fields of the fatherless [to take what is theirs],(C)
11
For their Redeemer is strong and mighty;
He will plead their case against you.
12
Apply your heart to discipline
And your ears to words of knowledge.
13
Do not withhold discipline from the child;
If you [a]swat him with a reed-like rod [applied with godly wisdom], he will not die.
14
You shall [b]swat him with the reed-like rod
And rescue his life from Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead).
15
My son, if your heart is wise,
My heart will also be glad;
16
Yes, my heart will rejoice
When your lips speak right things.
17
Do not let your heart envy sinners [who live godless lives and have no hope of salvation],
But [continue to] live in the [reverent, worshipful] fear of the Lord day by day.
18
Surely there is a future [and a reward],
And your hope and expectation will not be cut off.
19
Listen, my son, and be wise,
And direct your heart in the way [of the Lord].
20
Do not associate with heavy drinkers of wine,
Or with gluttonous eaters of meat,(D)
21
For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty,
And the drowsiness [of overindulgence] will clothe one with rags.
22
Listen to your father, who sired you,
And do not despise your mother when she is old.
23
[c]Buy truth, and do not sell it;
Get wisdom and instruction and understanding.
24
The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice,
And he who sires a wise child will have joy in him.
25
Let your father and your mother be glad,
And let her who gave birth to you rejoice [in your wise and godly choices].
26
My son, give me your heart
And let your eyes delight in my ways,
27
For a prostitute is a deep pit,
And an immoral woman is a narrow well.
28
She lurks and lies in wait like a robber [who waits for prey],
And she increases the faithless among men.
29
Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaining?
Who has wounds without cause?
Whose eyes are red and dim?
30
Those who linger long over wine,
Those who go to taste mixed wine.(E)
31
Do not look at wine when it is red,
When it sparkles in the glass,
When it goes down smoothly.
32
At the last it bites like a serpent
And stings like a viper.
33
Your [drunken] eyes will see strange things
And your mind will utter perverse things [untrue things, twisted things].
34
And you will be [as unsteady] as one who lies down in the middle of the sea,
And [as vulnerable to disaster] as one who lies down on the top of a ship’s mast, saying,
35
“They struck me, but I was not hurt!
They beat me, but I did not feel it!
When will I wake up?
I will seek more wine.”

- Proverbs 23:23 The ancient rabbis routinely assumed “truth” to refer to the Torah (Law), and they interpreted the first part of this command to mean that a student should pay a teacher to teach him the Torah if he can find no one to teach him for free. As for the second part, they said that if the student had to pay to learn, he should not view this as grounds to charge for teaching others, but should teach the Torah for free.

23 Quando te assentares a comer com um governador, atenta bem para o que se te pôs diante; 2 e põe uma faca à tua garganta, se és homem glutão. 3 Não cobices os seus manjares gostosos, porque são pão de mentiras. 4 Não te canses para enriqueceres; dá de mão à tua própria sabedoria. 5 Porventura, fitarás os olhos naquilo que não é nada? Porque, certamente, isso se fará asas e voará ao céu como a águia. 6 Não comas o pão daquele que tem os olhos malignos, nem cobices os seus manjares gostosos. 7 Porque, como imaginou na sua alma, assim é; ele te dirá: Come e bebe; mas o seu coração não estará contigo. 8 Vomitarias o bocado que comeste e perderias as tuas suaves palavras. 9 Não fales aos ouvidos do tolo, porque desprezará a sabedoria das tuas palavras. 10 Não removas os limites antigos, nem entres nas herdades dos órfãos, 11 porque o seu Redentor é forte; ele pleiteará a sua causa contra ti. 12 Aplica à disciplina o teu coração e os teus ouvidos, às palavras do conhecimento. 13 Não retires a disciplina da criança, porque, fustigando-a com a vara, nem por isso morrerá. 14 Tu a fustigarás com a vara e livrarás a sua alma do inferno. 15 Filho meu, se o teu coração for sábio, alegrar-se-á o meu coração, sim, o meu próprio. 16 E exultará o meu íntimo, quando os teus lábios falarem coisas retas. 17 Não tenha o teu coração inveja dos pecadores; antes, sê no temor do Senhor todo o dia. 18 Porque deveras há um fim bom; não será malograda a tua esperança.
19 Ouve tu, filho meu, e sê sábio e dirige no caminho o teu coração. 20 Não estejas entre os beberrões de vinho, nem entre os comilões de carne. 21 Porque o beberrão e o comilão cairão em pobreza; e a sonolência faz trazer as vestes rotas.
22 Ouve a teu pai, que te gerou, e não desprezes a tua mãe, quando vier a envelhecer. 23 Compra a verdade e não a vendas; sim, a sabedoria, e a disciplina, e a prudência. 24 Grandemente se regozijará o pai do justo, e o que gerar a um sábio se alegrará nele. 25 Alegrem-se teu pai e tua mãe, e regozije-se a que te gerou. 26 Dá-me, filho meu, o teu coração, e os teus olhos observem os meus caminhos. 27 Porque cova profunda é a prostituta, e poço estreito, a estranha. 28 Também ela, como um salteador, se põe a espreitar e multiplica entre os homens os iníquos.
29 Para quem são os ais? Para quem, os pesares? Para quem, as pelejas? Para quem, as queixas? Para quem, as feridas sem causa? E para quem, os olhos vermelhos? 30 Para os que se demoram perto do vinho, para os que andam buscando bebida misturada. 31 Não olhes para o vinho, quando se mostra vermelho, quando resplandece no copo e se escoa suavemente. 32 No seu fim, morderá como a cobra e, como o basilisco, picará. 33 Os teus olhos olharão para as mulheres estranhas, e o teu coração falará perversidades. 34 E serás como o que dorme no meio do mar e como o que dorme no topo do mastro 35 e dirás: Espancaram-me, e não me doeu; bateram-me, e não o senti; quando virei a despertar? Ainda tornarei a buscá-la outra vez.

23 Quando você se assentar
para uma refeição
com alguma autoridade,
observe com atenção
quem está diante de você,
2 e encoste a faca à sua própria garganta,
se estiver com grande apetite.
3 Não deseje as iguarias que lhe oferece,
pois podem ser enganosas.
4 Não esgote suas forças
tentando ficar rico;
tenha bom senso!
5 As riquezas desaparecem
assim que você as contempla;
elas criam asas
e voam como águias pelo céu.
6 Não aceite a refeição
de um hospedeiro invejoso[a],
nem deseje as iguarias que lhe oferece;
7 pois ele só pensa nos gastos.
Ele lhe diz: “Coma e beba!”,
mas não fala com sinceridade.
8 Você vomitará o pouco que comeu,
e desperdiçará a sua cordialidade.
9 Não vale a pena conversar com o tolo,
pois ele despreza a sabedoria
do que você fala.
10 Não mude de lugar
os antigos marcos de propriedade,
nem invada as terras dos órfãos,
11 pois aquele que defende
os direitos[b] deles é forte.
Ele lutará contra você para defendê-los.
12 Dedique à disciplina o seu coração,
e os seus ouvidos
às palavras que dão conhecimento.
13 Não evite disciplinar a criança;
se você a castigar com a vara,
ela não morrerá.
14 Castigue-a, você mesmo, com a vara,
e assim a livrará da sepultura[c].
15 Meu filho, se o seu coração for sábio,
o meu coração se alegrará.
16 Sentirei grande alegria
quando os seus lábios falarem com retidão.
17 Não inveje os pecadores
em seu coração;
melhor será que tema sempre o Senhor.
18 Se agir assim, certamente haverá
bom futuro para você,
e a sua esperança não falhará.
19 Ouça, meu filho, e seja sábio;
guie o seu coração pelo bom caminho.
20 Não ande com os que
se encharcam de vinho,
nem com os que
se empanturram de carne.
21 Pois os bêbados e os glutões
se empobrecerão,
e a sonolência os vestirá de trapos.
22 Ouça o seu pai, que o gerou;

23 Compre a verdade e não abra mão dela,

31 Não se deixe atrair pelo vinho
quando está vermelho,
quando cintila no copo
e escorre suavemente!
32 No fim, ele morde como serpente
e envenena como víbora.
33 Seus olhos verão coisas estranhas,
e sua mente imaginará coisas distorcidas.
34 Você será como quem
dorme no meio do mar,
como quem se deita
no alto das cordas do mastro.
35 E dirá: “Espancaram-me,
mas eu nada senti!
Bateram em mim, mas nem percebi!
Quando acordarei
para que possa beber mais uma vez?”
