Proverbs of Solomon

10 The proverbs^(A) of Solomon:^(B)

A wise son brings joy to his father,^(C)
but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.

²Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value,^(D)
but righteousness delivers from death.^(E)

³The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,^(F)
but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.^(G)

⁴Lazy hands make for poverty,^(H)
but diligent hands bring wealth.^(I)

⁵He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son,
but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.^(J)

⁶Blessings crown the head of the righteous,
but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.^[a]^(K)

⁷The name of the righteous^(L) is used in blessings,^[b]
but the name of the wicked^(M) will rot.^(N)

⁸The wise in heart accept commands,
but a chattering fool comes to ruin.^(O)

⁹Whoever walks in integrity^(P) walks securely,^(Q)
but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.^(R)

¹⁰Whoever winks maliciously^(S) causes grief,
and a chattering fool comes to ruin.

¹¹The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,^(T)
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.^(U)

¹²Hatred stirs up conflict,
but love covers over all wrongs.^(V)

¹³Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning,^(W)
but a rod is for the back of one who has no sense.^(X)

¹⁴The wise store up knowledge,^(Y)
but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.^(Z)

¹⁵The wealth of the rich is their fortified city,^(AA)
but poverty is the ruin of the poor.^(AB)

¹⁶The wages of the righteous is life,^(AC)
but the earnings of the wicked are sin and death.^(AD)

¹⁷Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life,^(AE)
but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.

¹⁸Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips^(AF)
and spreads slander is a fool.

¹⁹Sin is not ended by multiplying words,
but the prudent hold their tongues.^(AG)

²⁰The tongue of the righteous is choice silver,
but the heart of the wicked is of little value.

²¹The lips of the righteous nourish many,
but fools die for lack of sense.^(AH)

²²The blessing of the Lord^(AI) brings wealth,^(AJ)
without painful toil for it.^(AK)

²³A fool finds pleasure in wicked schemes,^(AL)
but a person of understanding delights in wisdom.

²⁴What the wicked dread^(AM) will overtake them;^(AN)
what the righteous desire will be granted.^(AO)

²⁵When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone,
but the righteous stand firm^(AP) forever.^(AQ)

²⁶As vinegar to the teeth and smoke^(AR) to the eyes,
so are sluggards to those who send them.^(AS)

²⁷The fear of the Lord adds length to life,^(AT)
but the years of the wicked are cut short.^(AU)

²⁸The prospect of the righteous is joy,
but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.^(AV)

²⁹The way of the Lord is a refuge for the blameless,
but it is the ruin of those who do evil.^(AW)

³⁰The righteous will never be uprooted,
but the wicked will not remain in the land.^(AX)

³¹From the mouth of the righteous comes the fruit of wisdom,^(AY)
but a perverse tongue^(AZ) will be silenced.

³²The lips of the righteous know what finds favor,^(BA)
but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.^(BB)

Judges 11-12

New International Version

11 Jephthah^(A) the Gileadite was a mighty warrior.^(B) His father was Gilead;^(C) his mother was a prostitute.^(D) ²Gilead’s wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family,” they said, “because you are the son of another woman.” ³So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob,^(E) where a gang of scoundrels^(F) gathered around him and followed him.

⁴Some time later, when the Ammonites^(G) were fighting against Israel, ⁵the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. ⁶“Come,” they said, “be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites.”

⁷Jephthah said to them, “Didn’t you hate me and drive me from my father’s house?^(H) Why do you come to me now, when you’re in trouble?”

⁸The elders of Gilead said to him, “Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be head^(I) over all of us who live in Gilead.”

⁹Jephthah answered, “Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the Lord gives them to me—will I really be your head?”

¹⁰The elders of Gilead replied, “The Lord is our witness;^(J) we will certainly do as you say.” ¹¹So Jephthah went with the elders^(K) of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated^(L) all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.^(M)

¹²Then Jephthah sent messengers to the Ammonite king with the question: “What do you have against me that you have attacked my country?”

¹³The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon^(N) to the Jabbok,^(O) all the way to the Jordan. Now give it back peaceably.”

¹⁴Jephthah sent back messengers to the Ammonite king, ¹⁵saying:

“This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab^(P) or the land of the Ammonites.^(Q) ¹⁶But when they came up out of Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea^[a]^(R) and on to Kadesh.^(S) ¹⁷Then Israel sent messengers^(T) to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Give us permission to go through your country,’^(U) but the king of Edom would not listen. They sent also to the king of Moab,^(V) and he refused.^(W) So Israel stayed at Kadesh.

¹⁸“Next they traveled through the wilderness, skirted the lands of Edom^(X) and Moab, passed along the eastern side^(Y) of the country of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon.^(Z) They did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was its border.

¹⁹“Then Israel sent messengers^(AA) to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon,^(AB) and said to him, ‘Let us pass through your country to our own place.’^(AC) ²⁰Sihon, however, did not trust Israel^[b] to pass through his territory. He mustered all his troops and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.^(AD)

²¹“Then the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and his whole army into Israel’s hands, and they defeated them. Israel took over all the land of the Amorites who lived in that country, ²²capturing all of it from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.^(AE)

²³“Now since the Lord, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out before his people Israel, what right have you to take it over? ²⁴Will you not take what your god Chemosh^(AF) gives you? Likewise, whatever the Lord our God has given us,^(AG) we will possess. ²⁵Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor,^(AH) king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or fight with them?^(AI) ²⁶For three hundred years Israel occupied^(AJ) Heshbon, Aroer,^(AK) the surrounding settlements and all the towns along the Arnon. Why didn’t you retake them during that time? ²⁷I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the Lord, the Judge,^(AL) decide^(AM) the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites.^(AN)”

²⁸The king of Ammon, however, paid no attention to the message Jephthah sent him.

²⁹Then the Spirit^(AO) of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah^(AP) of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.^(AQ) ³⁰And Jephthah made a vow^(AR) to the Lord: “If you give the Ammonites into my hands, ³¹whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph^(AS) from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.^(AT)”

³²Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into his hands. ³³He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith,^(AU) as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon.

³⁴When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing^(AV) to the sound of timbrels!^(AW) She was an only child.^(AX) Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. ³⁵When he saw her, he tore his clothes^(AY) and cried, “Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.^(AZ)”

³⁶“My father,” she replied, “you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised,^(BA) now that the Lord has avenged you^(BB) of your enemies,^(BC) the Ammonites. ³⁷But grant me this one request,” she said. “Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry.”

³⁸“You may go,” he said. And he let her go for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never marry. ³⁹After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin.

From this comes the Israelite tradition ⁴⁰that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.

Jephthah and Ephraim

12 The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon.^(BD) They said to Jephthah,^(BE) “Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you?^(BF) We’re going to burn down your house over your head.”

²Jephthah answered, “I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands. ³When I saw that you wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands^(BG) and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave me the victory^(BH) over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?”

⁴Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead^(BI) and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, “You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh.^(BJ)” ⁵The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan^(BK) leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, “Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead asked him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he replied, “No,” ⁶they said, “All right, say ‘Shibboleth.’” If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.

⁷Jephthah led^[c] Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in a town in Gilead.

Ibzan, Elon and Abdon

⁸After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem^(BL) led Israel. ⁹He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters away in marriage to those outside his clan, and for his sons he brought in thirty young women as wives from outside his clan. Ibzan led Israel seven years. ¹⁰Then Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem.

¹¹After him, Elon the Zebulunite led Israel ten years. ¹²Then Elon died and was buried in Aijalon^(BM) in the land of Zebulun.

¹³After him, Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon,^(BN) led Israel. ¹⁴He had forty sons and thirty grandsons,^(BO) who rode on seventy donkeys.^(BP) He led Israel eight years. ¹⁵Then Abdon son of Hillel died and was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.^(BQ)

²⁹Now if there is no resurrection, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them? ³⁰And as for us, why do we endanger ourselves every hour?^(A) ³¹I face death every day^(B)—yes, just as surely as I boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord. ³²If I fought wild beasts^(C) in Ephesus^(D) with no more than human hopes, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised,

“Let us eat and drink,
for tomorrow we die.”^[a]^(E)

³³Do not be misled:^(F) “Bad company corrupts good character.”^[b]^(G) ³⁴Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God^(H)—I say this to your shame.^(I)

The Resurrection Body

³⁵But someone will ask,^(J) “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”^(K) ³⁶How foolish!^(L) What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.^(M) ³⁷When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. ³⁸But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body.^(N) ³⁹Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another. ⁴⁰There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. ⁴¹The sun has one kind of splendor,^(O) the moon another and the stars another;^(P) and star differs from star in splendor.

⁴²So will it be^(Q) with the resurrection of the dead.^(R) The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable;^(S) ⁴³it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory;^(T) it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; ⁴⁴it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.^(U)

If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. ⁴⁵So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”^[c];^(V) the last Adam,^(W) a life-giving spirit.^(X) ⁴⁶The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.^(Y) ⁴⁷The first man was of the dust of the earth;^(Z) the second man is of heaven.^(AA) ⁴⁸As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.^(AB) ⁴⁹And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man,^(AC) so shall we^[d] bear the image of the heavenly man.^(AD)

⁵⁰I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood^(AE) cannot inherit the kingdom of God,^(AF) nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.^(AG) ⁵¹Listen, I tell you a mystery:^(AH) We will not all sleep,^(AI) but we will all be changed^(AJ)— ⁵²in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound,^(AK) the dead^(AL) will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. ⁵³For the perishable^(AM) must clothe itself with the imperishable,^(AN) and the mortal with immortality. ⁵⁴When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”^[e]^(AO)

⁵⁵“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”^[f]^(AP)

⁵⁶The sting of death is sin,^(AQ) and the power of sin is the law.^(AR) ⁵⁷But thanks be to God!^(AS) He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.^(AT)

⁵⁸Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord,^(AU) because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.^(AV)
