La mujer fácil, perdición del hombre
5 Atiende a mi sabiduría, hijo mío;
presta atención a mi inteligencia.
2 Así sabrás ser discreto
y podrás hablar con conocimiento.
3 Pues la mujer ajena habla con dulzura
y su voz es más suave que el aceite;
4 pero termina siendo más amarga que el ajenjo
y más cortante que una espada de dos filos.
5 Andar con ella conduce a la muerte;
sus pasos llevan directamente al sepulcro.
6 A ella no le importa el camino de la vida
ni se fija en lo inseguro de sus pasos.
7 Por lo tanto, hijo mío, atiéndeme,
no te apartes de mis enseñanzas.
8 Aléjate de la mujer ajena;
ni siquiera te acerques a la puerta de su casa,
9 para que no pierdas la riqueza de tus años
en manos de gente extraña y cruel;
10 para que ningún extraño se llene
con el fruto de tu esfuerzo y tu trabajo.
11 De lo contrario, acabarás por lamentarlo
cuando tu cuerpo se consuma poco a poco.
12 Y dirás: «¡Cómo pude despreciar la corrección!
¡Cómo pude rechazar las reprensiones!
13 ¡No quise escuchar a mis maestros,
no atendí a los que me instruían,
14 y por poco llego al colmo de la desgracia
ante la comunidad entera!»
15 Calma tu sed con el agua
que brota de tu propio pozo.
16 No derrames el agua de tu manantial;
no la desperdicies derramándola por la calle.
17 Pozo y agua son tuyos, y de nadie más;
¡no los compartas con extraños!
18 ¡Bendita sea tu propia fuente!
¡Goza con la compañera de tu juventud,
19 delicada y amorosa cervatilla!
¡Que nunca te falten sus caricias!
¡Que siempre te envuelva con su amor!
20 ¿Por qué enredarte, hijo mío, con la mujer ajena?
¿Por qué arrojarte en brazos de una extraña?
21 El Señor está pendiente de la conducta del hombre;
no pierde de vista ninguno de sus pasos.
22 Al malvado lo atrapa su propia maldad;
su propio pecado lo sujeta como un lazo.
23 Su indisciplina lo llevará a la muerte;
su gran necedad, a la perdición.

5 Querido jovencito,
atiende a mis sabios consejos,
2 para que cuando hables
lo hagas con sabiduría.
3 La mujer infiel te engaña
con palabras suaves y dulces,
4 que al fin de cuentas
resultan más amargas que la hiel
y más peligrosas que una espada.
5 Quien se enreda con ella,
¡va derecho a la tumba!
6 A ella no le importa
lo que digan de su conducta;
lleva una vida sin control,
pero no lo reconoce.
7 Querido jovencito, escúchame:
¡no desprecies mis consejos!
8 Apártate de esa mujer
y no te acerques a su casa,
9 o acabarás entregando tu salud
y los mejores años de tu vida
a gente cruel y peligrosa;
10 ¡todo tu salario, y el dinero
que con tanto esfuerzo te ganaste,
irá a parar en otras manos!
11-12 Cuando te hayas quedado pobre,
dirás entre llantos y lamentos:
«¡Pobre de mí, pobre de mí!
¡Nunca acepté ningún consejo!
13 Jamás les hice caso a mis maestros,
ni obedecí a los que me orientaban.
14 ¡Ahora estoy casi en la desgracia
ante toda la comunidad!»
Sé fiel a tu esposa
15 Si quieres disfrutar del amor,
disfrútalo con tu esposa.
16 ¡Guarda tu amor sólo para ella!
¡No se lo des a ninguna otra!
17 No compartas con nadie
el gozo de tu matrimonio.
18 ¡Bendita sea tu esposa,
la novia de tu juventud!
19 Es como una linda venadita;
deja que su amor y sus caricias
te hagan siempre feliz.
Dios mira tu conducta
20 Querido jovencito,
no dejes que otra mujer te cautive
ni busques las caricias
de la mujer casada.
21 Dios mira con mucha atención
la conducta de todos nosotros.
22 El pecado y las malas acciones
son trampas para el malvado,
y lo hacen su prisionero.
23 Así muere esta clase de gente
que no quiere ser corregida;
¡su falta de entendimiento
acaba por destruirla!

Avoid the mysterious woman
5 My son, pay attention to my wisdom.
Bend your ear to what I know,
2 so you might remain discreet,
and your lips might guard knowledge.
3 The lips of a mysterious woman drip honey,
and her tongue is smoother than oil,
4 but in the end she is bitter as gall,
sharp as a double-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death;
her steps lead to the grave.[a]
6 She doesn’t stay on the way of life.
Her paths wander, but she doesn’t know it.
7 Now sons, listen to me,
and don’t deviate from the words of my mouth.
8 Stay on a path that is far from her;
don’t approach the entrance to her house.
9 Otherwise, you will give your strength to others,
your years to a cruel person.
10 Otherwise, strangers will sap your strength,
and your hard work will end up in a foreigner’s house.
11 You will groan at the end
when your body and flesh are exhausted,
12 and you say, “How I hated instruction!
How my heart despised correction!
13 I didn’t listen to the voice of my instructor.
I didn’t obey my teacher.
14 I’m on the brink of utter ruin
in the assembled community.”
15 Drink water from your own cistern,
gushing water from your own well.
16 Should your fountains flood outside,
streams of water in the public squares?
17 They are yours alone,
not for you as well as strangers.
18 May your spring be blessed.
Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 She is a lovely deer, a graceful doe.
Let her breasts intoxicate you all the time;
always be drunk on her love.
20 Why, my son, should you lose your senses with a mysterious woman
and embrace the breasts of a foreign female?
21 The Lord’s eyes watch over every person’s path,
observing all their ways.
22 The wicked will be caught by their own evil acts,
grabbed by the ropes of their own sin.
23 Those without instruction will die,
misled by their own stupidity.

turn your ear to my words(B) of insight,
2 that you may maintain discretion
and your lips may preserve knowledge.
3 For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey,
and her speech is smoother than oil;(C)
4 but in the end she is bitter as gall,(D)

5 Her feet go down to death;
her steps lead straight to the grave.(E)
6 She gives no thought to the way of life;
her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it.(F)

do not turn aside from what I say.

do not go near the door of her house,
9 lest you lose your honor to others

10 lest strangers feast on your wealth

11 At the end of your life you will groan,
when your flesh and body are spent.
12 You will say, “How I hated discipline!
How my heart spurned correction!(J)
13 I would not obey my teachers
or turn my ear to my instructors.
14 And I was soon in serious trouble(K)
in the assembly of God’s people.”(L)
15 Drink water from your own cistern,
running water from your own well.
16 Should your springs overflow in the streets,
your streams of water in the public squares?
17 Let them be yours alone,
never to be shared with strangers.
18 May your fountain(M) be blessed,
and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.(N)
19 A loving doe, a graceful deer(O)—
may her breasts satisfy you always,
may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
20 Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife?
Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?
