28 El malvado huye sin que nadie lo persiga; pero el justo vive confiado como león.
2 Cuando hay rebelión en un país se multiplican sus dirigentes; pero el gobernante con sabiduría y entendimiento mantiene el orden.
3 El gobernante que oprime a los pobres, es como tormenta que acaba con la cosecha.
4 Los que abandonan la ley alaban al malvado; los que la cumplen luchan contra él.
5 Los malvados no comprenden la justicia, pero los que siguen al Señor entienden todo.
6 Es mejor ser pobre y honrado que rico y perverso.
7 El que obedece la ley es un hijo inteligente, pero el que anda con libertinos es vergüenza para su padre.
8 El que aumenta su riqueza cobrando intereses, la aumenta para el que se compadece de los pobres.
9 El que no presta atención a la ley aun sus oraciones son detestables.
10 El que lleva al justo por el camino del pecado, caerá en su propia trampa; pero los intachables heredarán el bien.
11 El rico es sabio en su propia opinión, pero el pobre e inteligente lo ve como realmente es.
12 Cuando los justos prosperan, todos se alegran, cuando los malvados triunfan, todos se esconden.
13 El que disimula su pecado no prosperará; pero el que lo confiesa y lo deja, obtendrá misericordia.
14 Dichoso el hombre que honra al Señor, pero el que endurece su corazón caerá en desgracia.
15 El gobernante malvado es tan peligroso para los pobres como el león rugiente o el oso hambriento.
16 El gobernante que no tiene entendimiento oprimirá a su pueblo; pero el que no es avaro tendrá larga vida.
17 El asesino atormentado por su sentimiento de culpa, será un fugitivo hasta que muera. ¡Que nadie lo apoye!
18 El que es honesto estará a salvo, pero el perverso será destruido.
19 El que trabaja su tierra tendrá comida en abundancia; el que pierde el tiempo tendrá pobreza en abundancia.
20 El hombre fiel recibirá bendiciones; pero el que busca enriquecerse rápidamente no quedará sin castigo.
21 No está bien ser parcial con nadie; hasta por un pedazo de pan se puede pecar.
22 El ambicioso trata de enriquecerse rápidamente, pero eso lo conduce a la pobreza.
23 Finalmente la gente estima más la crítica que la alabanza.
24 El que roba a su padre o a su madre y dice: «¿Qué hay de malo en eso?», es amigo de criminales.
25 La codicia provoca peleas; la confianza en el Señor lleva a la prosperidad.
26 El que confía en sí mismo es un necio; el que actúa con sabiduría estará a salvo.
27 El que ayuda al pobre no conocerá la pobreza; el que le niega su ayuda será maldecido.
28 Cuando los malvados triunfan, la gente se esconde; cuando los malvados caen, los justos prosperan.

28 El que nada debe, nada teme,
pero el malvado siempre huye
aunque nadie lo persiga.
2 En un país lleno de maldad
todos se creen líderes,
pero el gobernante capaz
logra poner el orden.
3 El pobre que maltrata a otro pobre
es como una tormenta
que acaba con las cosechas.
4 Los que se apartan de la ley
aplauden a los malvados,
pero los que la obedecen
se oponen a ellos.
5 Los malvados no entienden nada
acerca de la justicia,
pero los que obedecen a Dios
demuestran que sí la entienden.
6 Vale más el pobre honrado,
que el rico malvado.
7 El que es inteligente
obedece la ley;
el que todo lo malgasta,
llena de vergüenza a su padre.
8 Al que presta dinero
y luego exige que
le devuelvan el doble,
Dios le quitará todo
y hará que alguien
de buen corazón
se lo dé a los pobres.
9 Dios rechaza las oraciones
de los que no lo obedecen.
10 Quien hace pecar al hombre honrado
quedará atrapado en su propia trampa.
Los que hacen el bien
recibirán como premio el bien.
11 Aunque el rico se crea muy sabio,
el pobre con su inteligencia
se da cuenta que el rico
no es más que un tonto.
12 El triunfo de los justos
siempre es motivo de fiesta;
el triunfo de los malvados
espanta a todo el mundo.
13 Quien esconde su pecado
jamás puede prosperar;
quien lo confiesa y lo deja,
recibe el perdón.
14 ¡Dios bendice a quienes lo obedecen!
Pero los necios caen en la desgracia.
15 El gobernante malvado
que maltrata a un pueblo pobre
es como un león hambriento
que despedaza a su presa.
16 El gobernante estúpido
sólo piensa en maltratar y robar;
pero el que no lo hace
vivirá muchos años.
17 El que mata a otro
no merece ayuda.
¡Tarde o temprano
le pasará lo mismo!
18 El hombre honrado quedará a salvo;
el de mala conducta un día caerá.
19 El que trabaja
tendrá suficiente comida;
el que no trabaja
acabará en la pobreza.
20 El hombre digno de confianza
siempre será alabado;
el que sólo quiere hacerse rico
no quedará sin castigo.
21 No aceptes ser testigo falso
contra ninguna persona;
porque hay quienes lo hacen
hasta por un pedazo de pan.
22 Quien sólo vive
pensando en dinero,
acabará más pobre
de lo que se imagina.
23 El tiempo te demostrará
que vale más
una crítica sincera
que un elogio.
24 Amigo de gente malvada
es quien roba a sus padres
y alega que no ha hecho nada.
25 El amor al dinero es causa de pleitos.
Confía en Dios, y prosperarás.
26 El necio confía en sí mismo;
el sabio se pone a salvo.
27 El que ayuda al pobre
siempre tendrá de todo;
el que no ayuda al pobre
terminará en la desgracia.
28 Cuando triunfan los malvados,

The Message
If You Desert God’s Law
28 The wicked are edgy with guilt, ready to run off
even when no one’s after them;
Honest people are relaxed and confident,
bold as lions.
2 When the country is in chaos,
everybody has a plan to fix it—
But it takes a leader of real understanding
to straighten things out.
3 The wicked who oppress the poor
are like a hailstorm that beats down the harvest.
4 If you desert God’s law, you’re free to embrace depravity;
if you love God’s law, you fight for it tooth and nail.
5 Justice makes no sense to the evilminded;
those who seek God know it inside and out.
6 It’s better to be poor and direct
than rich and crooked.
7 Practice God’s law—get a reputation for wisdom;
hang out with a loose crowd—embarrass your family.
8 Get as rich as you want
through cheating and extortion,
But eventually some friend of the poor
is going to give it all back to them.
9 God has no use for the prayers
of the people who won’t listen to him.
10 Lead good people down a wrong path
and you’ll come to a bad end;
do good and you’ll be rewarded for it.
11 The rich think they know it all,
but the poor can see right through them.
12 When good people are promoted, everything is great,
but when the bad are in charge, watch out!
13 You can’t whitewash your sins and get by with it;
you find mercy by admitting and leaving them.
14 A tenderhearted person lives a blessed life;
a hardhearted person lives a hard life.
15 Lions roar and bears charge—
and the wicked lord it over the poor.
16 Among leaders who lack insight, abuse abounds,
but for one who hates corruption, the future is bright.
17 A murderer haunted by guilt
is doomed—there’s no helping him.
18 Walk straight—live well and be saved;
a devious life is a doomed life.
Doing Great Harm in Seemingly Harmless Ways
19 Work your garden—you’ll end up with plenty of food;
play and party—you’ll end up with an empty plate.
20 Committed and persistent work pays off;
get-rich-quick schemes are ripoffs.
21 Playing favorites is always a bad thing;
you can do great harm in seemingly harmless ways.
22 A miser in a hurry to get rich
doesn’t know that he’ll end up broke.
23 In the end, serious reprimand is appreciated
far more than bootlicking flattery.
24 Anyone who robs father and mother
and says, “So, what’s wrong with that?”
is worse than a pirate.
25 A grasping person stirs up trouble,
but trust in God brings a sense of well-being.
26 If you think you know it all, you’re a fool for sure;
real survivors learn wisdom from others.
27 Be generous to the poor—you’ll never go hungry;
shut your eyes to their needs, and run a gauntlet of curses.
28 When corruption takes over, good people go underground,
but when the crooks are thrown out, it’s safe to come out.

2 For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged.
3 A poor man that oppresseth the poor is like a sweeping rain which leaveth no food.
4 They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them.
5 Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the Lord understand all things.
6 Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.
7 Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.
8 He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor.
9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.
10 Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession.
11 The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out.
12 When righteous men do rejoice, there is great glory: but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden.
13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
14 Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.
15 As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people.
16 The prince that wanteth understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.
17 A man that doeth violence to the blood of any person shall flee to the pit; let no man stay him.
18 Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once.
19 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.
20 A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.
21 To have respect of persons is not good: for for a piece of bread that man will transgress.

23 He that rebuketh a man afterwards shall find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue.

but a ruler with discernment and knowledge maintains order.
3 A ruler[a] who oppresses the poor
is like a driving rain that leaves no crops.
4 Those who forsake instruction praise the wicked,
but those who heed it resist them.
5 Evildoers do not understand what is right,
but those who seek the Lord understand it fully.
6 Better the poor whose walk is blameless
than the rich whose ways are perverse.(D)
7 A discerning son heeds instruction,
but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.(E)
8 Whoever increases wealth by taking interest(F) or profit from the poor
amasses it for another,(G) who will be kind to the poor.(H)
9 If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction,
even their prayers are detestable.(I)
10 Whoever leads the upright along an evil path
will fall into their own trap,(J)
but the blameless will receive a good inheritance.
11 The rich are wise in their own eyes;
