26 Como no conviene la nieve en el verano, ni la lluvia en la siega,
Así no conviene al necio la honra.
2 Como el gorrión en su vagar, y como la golondrina en su vuelo,
Así la maldición sin motivo no llega a término.
3 El látigo para el caballo, el cabestro para el asno,
Y la vara para la espalda del necio.
4 Nunca respondas al necio de acuerdo con su necedad,
Para que no seas tú también como él.
5 Responde al necio como merece su necedad,
No sea que vaya a creerse que es un sabio.
6 Como el que se corta los pies y bebe su amargura,
Así es el que envía recado por mano de un necio.
7 Las piernas del cojo penden inútiles;
Así es el proverbio en la boca del necio.
8 Como quien ata la piedra en la honda,
Así hace el que da honra al necio.
9 Espinas hincadas en mano del embriagado,
Tal es el proverbio en la boca de los necios.
10 Como arquero que hiere a todos los transeúntes,
Es el que toma a sueldo insensatos y vagabundos.
11 Como perro que vuelve a su vómito,
Así es el necio que repite su necedad.
12 ¿Has visto hombre sabio en su propia opinión?
Más esperanza hay del necio que de él.
13 Dice el perezoso: Hay un león en el camino;
Hay un león en la calle.
14 Como la puerta gira sobre sus quicios,
Así el perezoso da vueltas en su cama.
15 Mete el perezoso su mano en el plato;
Y se cansa de llevársela a la boca.
16 En su propia opinión el perezoso es más sabio
Que siete que sepan aconsejar.
17 El que al pasar se entremete en disputa que no le incumbe,
Es como el que toma al perro por las orejas.
18 Como el que enloquece, y echa llamas
Y saetas y muerte,
19 Tal es el hombre que engaña a su amigo,
Y dice: Ciertamente lo hice por broma.
20 Sin leña se apaga el fuego,
Y donde no hay chismoso, cesa la contienda.
21 El carbón para brasas, y la leña para el fuego;
Y el hombre rencilloso para encender contienda.
22 Las palabras del chismoso son como golosinas,
Y penetran hasta las entrañas.
23 Como escoria de plata que barniza la loza,
Son los labios lisonjeros con un corazón malo.
24 El que odia disimula con sus labios;
Mas en su interior maquina engaño.
25 Aunque hable en tono amable, no le creas;
Porque siete abominaciones hay en su corazón.
26 Aunque su odio se cubra con disimulo,
Su maldad será descubierta en la congregación.
27 El que cava foso caerá en él;
Y al que hace rodar una piedra grande, se le vendrá encima.
28 La lengua falsa atormenta al que ya es su víctima,
Y la boca lisonjera empuja hacia el precipicio.

La necedad
26 No es posible imaginar
que caiga nieve en la selva
ni que llueva en el desierto
ni que se alabe a un tonto.
2 La maldición sin motivo
jamás surte efecto;
es como un ave sin rumbo.
3 Para el caballo, el látigo;
para el burro, el freno;
para el necio, el garrote.
4 No te pongas al nivel del necio,
o resultará que el necio eres tú.
5 Pon al tonto en su lugar,
para que no se crea muy sabio.
6 Enviar como mensajero a un tonto
da lo mismo que no enviar a nadie.
7 Dime de qué sirve
que el tonto diga proverbios,
y te diré de qué sirve
una carreta sin bueyes.
8 Dime de qué sirve
alabar al tonto,
y te diré de qué sirve
un arco sin flechas.
9 Un proverbio en labios de un tonto
es lo mismo que un cuchillo
en manos de un borracho.
10 Tan peligroso es que lances
piedras al aire,
como que a un tonto
le des trabajo en tu casa.
11 El perro vuelve a su vómito,
y el necio insiste en su necedad.
12 Más puede esperarse
de quien reconoce que es tonto,
que de un tonto que se cree muy sabio.
La pereza
13 El perezoso pone como pretexto
que en la calle hay leones
que se lo quieren comer.
14 ¿En qué se parece
el perezoso a la puerta?
¡En que los dos se mueven,
pero ninguno avanza!
15 Al que es perezoso
hasta comer le cuesta trabajo.
16 El perezoso se cree muy sabio;
piensa que no hay nadie como él.
17 Tan peligroso resulta
meterse en pleitos ajenos,
como querer agarrar por la cola
a un perro bravo.
18 Como loco que lanza piedras al aire,
19 es quien engaña al amigo
y dice que estaba bromeando.
20 El fuego se apaga
si no se le echa más leña,
y el pleito se acaba
si no siguen los chismes.
21 ¿En qué se parecen
la leña y el peleador?
En que la leña aviva el fuego,
y el peleador aviva el pleito.
22 Los chismes son muy sabrosos,
pero también hacen mucho daño.
23 Los piropos del malvado
son tan engañosos
como una olla de barro
cubierta de plata.
24 El que esconde sus rencores,
en el fondo es mentiroso.
25 No creas lo que te diga,
pues te habla con dulzura
pero busca hacerte daño.
26 Miente al decir que te quiere,
pues todos saben que te odia.
27 No abras zanjas
si no quieres caer en ellas,
ni hagas rodar piedras
si no quieres que te aplasten.
28 Quien miente, no se quiere a sí mismo;
quien a todos alaba, se busca problemas.

2 As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.
3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.
4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.
6 He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.
7 The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
8 As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.
9 As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouths of fools.
10 The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.
11 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.
12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
13 The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.
14 As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.
15 The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.
16 The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.
17 He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.
18 As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,
19 So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?
20 Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.
21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.
22 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
23 Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.
24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;
25 When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.
26 Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.
27 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.
28 A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

So honor is not fitting for a fool.
2 Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow,
So (B)a curse without cause shall not alight.
3 (C)A whip for the horse,
A bridle for the donkey,
And a rod for the fool’s back.
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest you also be like him.
5 (D)Answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest he be wise in his own eyes.
6 He who sends a message by the hand of a fool
Cuts off his own feet and drinks violence.
7 Like the legs of the lame that hang limp
Is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
8 Like one who binds a stone in a sling
Is he who gives honor to a fool.
9 Like a thorn that goes into the hand of a drunkard
Is a proverb in the mouth of fools.

So is a contentious man to kindle strife.

23 Fervent lips with a wicked heart

24 He who hates, disguises it with his lips,
And lays up deceit within himself;

For there are seven abominations in his heart;

His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly.

And he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him.
28 A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it,

is someone who rushes into a quarrel not their own.

flaming arrows of death
19 is one who deceives their neighbor
and says, “I was only joking!”
20 Without wood a fire goes out;
without a gossip a quarrel dies down.(T)
21 As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire,
so is a quarrelsome person for kindling strife.(U)
22 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels;
they go down to the inmost parts.(V)
23 Like a coating of silver dross on earthenware
are fervent[a] lips with an evil heart.
24 Enemies disguise themselves with their lips,(W)
but in their hearts they harbor deceit.(X)
25 Though their speech is charming,(Y) do not believe them,
for seven abominations fill their hearts.(Z)
26 Their malice may be concealed by deception,
but their wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
