Segunda colección de dichos de Salomón
25 También éstos son dichos de Salomón, copiados por gente al servicio de Ezequías, rey de Judá:
2 Es gloria de Dios tener secretos,
y honra de los reyes penetrar en ellos.
3 La altura del cielo,
la profundidad de la tierra
y los pensamientos de los reyes,
son cosas en las que no es posible penetrar.
4 Aparta de la plata las impurezas,
y el platero producirá una copa;
5 aparta del servicio del rey al malvado,
y su trono se afirmará en la justicia.
6 No te des importancia ante el rey,
ni tomes el lugar de la gente importante;
7 vale más que te inviten a subir allí,
que ser humillado ante los grandes señores.
Lo que veas con tus propios ojos
8 no lo lleves en seguida a los tribunales,
porque otro testigo puede desmentirte
y al final no sabrás qué hacer.
9 Defiéndete de quien te acuse,
pero no descubras el secreto ajeno;
10 pues alguien puede oírte y ponerte en vergüenza,
y tu mala fama será cosa sin remedio.
11 Las palabras en el momento oportuno
son como manzanas de oro incrustadas en plata.
12 Como un anillo y un collar del oro más fino,
es la sabia reprensión en quien sabe recibirla.
13 El mensajero fiel es para el que lo envía
cual frescura de nieve en día caluroso,
pues da nuevos ánimos a su señor.
14 Nubes y viento y nada de lluvia,
es quien presume de dar y nunca da nada.
15 La paciencia calma el enojo;
las palabras suaves rompen la resistencia.
16 Si encuentras miel, no comas más de la cuenta,
no sea que de mucho comer la vomites.
17 Si visitas a tu amigo, no lo hagas con frecuencia,
no sea que se canse de ti y llegue a odiarte.
18 Mazo, espada, flecha puntiaguda,
¡eso es quien declara en falso contra su amigo!
19 Confiar en un traidor en momentos de angustia
es como andar con una pierna rota
o comer con un diente picado.
20 Cantar canciones al corazón afligido
es como echar vinagre en la llaga
o quitarse la ropa en tiempo de frío.
21 Si tu enemigo tiene hambre, dale de comer;
y si tiene sed, dale de beber;
22 así harás que le arda la cara de vergüenza,
y el Señor te lo pagará.
23 Por el viento del norte viene la lluvia,
y por las malas lenguas las malas caras.
24 Más vale vivir en el borde de la azotea,
que en una amplia mansión con una mujer pendenciera.
25 Como agua fresca en garganta sedienta
así caen las buenas noticias de tierras lejanas.
26 Manantial de agua turbia y revuelta
es el inocente que tiembla ante el culpable.
27 No hace bien comer mucha miel,
pero es una honra investigar lo difícil.
28 Como ciudad sin muralla y expuesta al peligro,
así es quien no sabe dominar sus impulsos.

25 Iată încă(A) vreo câteva din Pildele lui Solomon, strânse de oamenii lui Ezechia, împăratul lui Iuda.
2 Slava(B) lui Dumnezeu stă în ascunderea lucrurilor,
dar slava împăraţilor stă în cercetarea(C) lucrurilor.
3 Înălţimea cerurilor, adâncimea pământului
şi inima împăraţilor sunt nepătrunse.
4 Scoate(D) zgura din argint,
şi argintarul va face din el un vas ales.
5 Scoate(E) şi pe cel rău dinaintea împăratului
şi scaunul lui de domnie(F) se va întări prin neprihănire.
6 Nu te făli înaintea împăratului
şi nu lua locul celor mari;
7 căci(G) este mai bine să ţi se zică: „Suie-te mai sus!”
decât să fii pogorât înaintea voievodului
pe care ţi-l văd ochii.
8 Nu(H) te grăbi să te iei la ceartă,
ca nu cumva, la urmă, să nu ştii ce să faci,
când te va lua la ocări aproapele tău.
9 Apără-ţi(I) pricina împotriva aproapelui tău,
dar nu da pe faţă taina altuia,
10 ca nu cumva, aflând-o cineva, să te umple de ruşine
şi să-ţi iasă nume rău, care să nu se mai şteargă.
11 Un cuvânt spus la vremea potrivită
este ca nişte mere(J) de aur într-un coşuleţ de argint.
12 Ca o verigă de aur şi o podoabă de aur curat,
aşa este înţeleptul care mustră, pentru o ureche ascultătoare.
13 Ca(K) răcoreala zăpezii pe vremea secerişului,
aşa este un sol credincios pentru cel ce-l trimite:
el înviorează sufletul stăpânului său.
14 Ca norii(L) şi vântul fără ploaie,
aşa este un om care(M) se laudă pe nedrept cu dărniciile lui.
15 Prin(N) răbdare se înduplecă un voievod
şi o limbă dulce poate zdrobi oase.
16 Dacă(O) dai peste miere, nu mânca decât atât cât îţi ajunge,
ca să nu ţi se scârbească şi s-o verşi din gură.
17 Calcă rar în casa aproapelui tău,
ca să nu se sature de tine şi să te urască.
18 Ca un buzdugan, ca o sabie şi ca o săgeată ascuţită,
aşa este un om care(P) face o mărturisire mincinoasă împotriva aproapelui său.
19 Ca un dinte stricat şi ca un picior care şchioapătă,
aşa este încrederea într-un stricat la ziua necazului.
20 Ca unul care îşi scoate haina pe o zi rece sau varsă oţet pe silitră,
aşa este cine cântă cântece unei inimi în nenorocire.
21 Dacă(Q) este flămând vrăjmaşul tău, dă-i pâine să mănânce,
dacă-i este sete, dă-i apă să bea.
22 Căci(R), făcând aşa, aduni cărbuni aprinşi pe capul lui,
şi(S) Domnul îţi va răsplăti.
23 Vântul(T) de miazănoapte aduce ploaia
şi limba(U) clevetitoare aduce o faţă mâhnită.
24 Mai(V) bine să locuieşti într-un colţ pe acoperiş,
decât să locuieşti într-o casă mare cu o nevastă gâlcevitoare.
25 Ca apa proaspătă pentru un om obosit,
aşa este o veste bună venită dintr-o ţară depărtată.
26 Ca o fântână tulbure şi ca un izvor stricat,
aşa este cel neprihănit care se clatină înaintea celui rău.
27 Nu(W) este bine să mănânci multă miere:
tot aşa, nu este o cinste să(X) alergi după slava ta însuţi.
28 Omul care(Y) nu este stăpân pe sine
este ca o cetate surpată şi fără ziduri.

25 These are more proverbs(A) of Solomon, compiled by the men of Hezekiah king of Judah:(B)
2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter;
to search out a matter is the glory of kings.(C)
3 As the heavens are high and the earth is deep,
so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.
4 Remove the dross from the silver,
and a silversmith can produce a vessel;
5 remove wicked officials from the king’s presence,(D)
and his throne will be established(E) through righteousness.(F)
6 Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence,
and do not claim a place among his great men;
7 it is better for him to say to you, “Come up here,”(G)
than for him to humiliate you before his nobles.
What you have seen with your eyes
8 do not bring[a] hastily to court,
for what will you do in the end
if your neighbor puts you to shame?(H)
9 If you take your neighbor to court,
do not betray another’s confidence,
10 or the one who hears it may shame you
and the charge against you will stand.
11 Like apples[b] of gold in settings of silver(I)
is a ruling rightly given.
12 Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold
is the rebuke of a wise judge to a listening ear.(J)
13 Like a snow-cooled drink at harvest time
is a trustworthy messenger to the one who sends him;
he refreshes the spirit of his master.(K)
14 Like clouds and wind without rain
is one who boasts of gifts never given.
16 If you find honey, eat just enough—
too much of it, and you will vomit.(N)
17 Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house—
too much of you, and they will hate you.
18 Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow
is one who gives false testimony against a neighbor.(O)
19 Like a broken tooth or a lame foot
is reliance on the unfaithful in a time of trouble.
20 Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day,
or like vinegar poured on a wound,
is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.
21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
22 In doing this, you will heap burning coals(P) on his head,
and the Lord will reward you.(Q)
23 Like a north wind that brings unexpected rain
is a sly tongue—which provokes a horrified look.
24 Better to live on a corner of the roof
than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.(R)
25 Like cold water to a weary soul
is good news from a distant land.(S)
26 Like a muddied spring or a polluted well
are the righteous who give way to the wicked.
27 It is not good to eat too much honey,(T)
nor is it honorable to search out matters that are too deep.(U)
28 Like a city whose walls are broken through
is a person who lacks self-control.
