Dios Habla Hoy
- 19 -
24 No tengas envidia de los malvados
ni ambiciones estar en su compañía,
2 porque sólo piensan en la violencia
y no hablan más que de hacer lo malo.

3 Con sabiduría se construye la casa,
y con inteligencia se ponen sus cimientos;
4 con conocimientos se llenan sus cuartos
de objetos valiosos y de buen gusto.

5 Vale más hombre sabio que hombre fuerte;
vale más el saber que el poder,
6 pues la guerra se hace con buenos planes
y la victoria depende de los muchos consejeros.

7 El necio no sabe qué decir ante el tribunal,
pues la sabiduría está fuera de su alcance.

8 Quien sólo piensa en hacer daño,
gana fama de malintencionado.
9 La intención del necio es el pecado;
¡no hay quien soporte al insolente!

10 Si te desanimas cuando estás en aprietos,
no son muchas las fuerzas que tienes.

11 Salva a los condenados a muerte;
libra del peligro a los que están por morir.
12 Pues aunque afirmes que no lo sabías,
el que juzga los motivos habrá de darse cuenta;
bien lo sabrá el que te vigila,
el que paga a cada uno según sus acciones.

13 Come, hijo mío, la dulce miel del panal;
prueba lo deliciosa que está.
14 Así de dulces te parecerán
la sabiduría y el conocimiento;
si los encuentras, tendrás un buen fin
y tu esperanza jamás será destruida.

15 No hagas planes malvados en contra del hombre honrado,
ni causes destrozos en la casa donde vive,
16 porque aunque caiga siete veces,
otras tantas se levantará;
pero los malvados se hundirán en la desgracia.

17 No te alegres ni hagas fiesta
por los tropiezos y caídas de tu enemigo,
18 porque al Señor no le agradará ver esto,
y entonces su enojo se apartará de él.

19 No te enojes por causa de los malvados
ni sientas envidia de los perversos,
20 porque el malvado no tendrá un buen fin:
¡el malvado se apagará como una lámpara!

21 Honra a Dios y al rey, hijo mío;
no te juntes con los enemigos,
22 porque su ruina llega en un instante
y nadie sabe el castigo que Dios y el rey pueden dar.
23 También éstos son dichos de los sabios:
No está bien que en los tribunales
se discrimine a nadie.
24 Al que declara inocente al culpable,
los pueblos lo maldicen y las naciones lo desprecian;
25 pero a quienes lo castigan, les va bien
y la gente los cubre de bendiciones.
26 El que da buenas respuestas
es como si diera un beso en los labios.
27 Arregla tus negocios en la calle
y realiza tus tareas en el campo,
y luego podrás construir tu casa.
28 No declares sin razón contra tu prójimo
ni hagas afirmaciones falsas.
29 No pienses jamás en vengarte,
haciéndole al otro lo mismo que él te hizo.
30 Pasé por el campo del perezoso
y por el viñedo del hombre falto de seso:
31 y lo que vi fue un terreno lleno de espinos,
con su cerca de piedras derrumbada.
32 Al ver esto, lo grabé en mi mente;
lo vi y aprendí esta lección:
33 mientras tú sueñas y cabeceas,
y te cruzas de brazos para dormir mejor,
34 la pobreza vendrá y te atacará
como un vagabundo armado.

la amistad de los malvados,

14 Quiera Dios que en la sabiduría

24 Don’t be envious of evil people,
and don’t desire to be with them.
2 For their minds are occupied with violence,
and their lips speak of making trouble.
3 By wisdom a house is built,
by understanding it is made secure,
4 and by knowledge its rooms are filled
with all kinds of costly and pleasant possessions.
5 A wise man is strong;
yes, a man of knowledge grows in strength.
6 For with clever strategy you wage your war,
and victory comes from having many advisers.
7 Wisdom is too lofty for a fool;
he keeps his mouth shut at the city gate.
8 He who plans to do evil
people call a schemer.
9 The evil plans of the foolish are sin,
and people detest a scorner.
10 If you slack off on a day of distress,
your strength is small indeed.
11 Yes, rescue those being dragged off to death —
won’t you save those about to be killed?
12 If you say, “We knew nothing about it,”
won’t he who weighs hearts discern it?
Yes, he who guards you will know it
and repay each one as his deeds deserve.
13 My son, eat honey, for it is good;
honeycomb drippings are sweet to your taste.
14 Know that wisdom is similar[ly sweet] to your soul;
if you find it, then you will have a future,
what you hope for will not be cut off.
15 Don’t lurk like an outlaw near the home of the righteous,
don’t raid the place where he lives.
16 For though he falls seven times, he will get up again;
it’s the wicked who fail under stress.
17 Don’t rejoice when your enemy falls;
don’t let your heart be glad when he stumbles.
18 For Adonai might see it, and it would displease him;
he might withdraw his anger from your foe.
19 Don’t get upset because of evildoers;
don’t be envious of the wicked.
20 For the evil person has no future —
the lamp of the wicked will go out.
21 My son, don’t get involved with revolutionaries,
but fear Adonai and the king.
22 For disaster from them will suddenly appear,
and who knows what ruin they both can cause?
23 These also are sayings of the wise:
Showing partiality in judgment is not good.
24 He who tells the guilty, “You are innocent,”
will be cursed by peoples, reviled by nations;
25 but with those who condemn him, things will go well,
and a good blessing will come upon them.
26 Giving an honest answer
is like giving a kiss.
27 Prepare your outside work,
and get things ready for yourself on the land;
after that, build your house.
28 Don’t be a witness against your neighbor for no reason —
would you use your lips to deceive?
29 Don’t say, “I’ll do to him what he did to me,
I’ll pay him back what his deeds deserve.”
30 I passed by the field of the lazy man
and the vineyard of the man lacking sense.
31 There it was, overgrown with thistles;
the ground was covered with nettles,
and its stone wall was broken down.
32 I looked, and I thought about it;
I saw, and I learned this lesson:
33 “I’ll just lie here a bit, rest a little longer,
just fold my hands for a little more sleep” —
34 and poverty comes marching in on you,
scarcity hits you like an invading soldier.

Benefits of Wisdom
24 Don’t be envious of wicked men
or wish you were with them,
2 because they[a] plan violence,
and they are always talking[b] about trouble.
3 By wisdom a house is built;
it is made secure through understanding.
4 By knowledge its rooms are furnished
with all sorts of expensive and beautiful goods.
5 A wise man is strong,[c]
and a knowledgeable man grows in strength.
6 For through wise counsel you will wage your war,
and victory lies in an abundance of advisors.
7 Wisdom lies beyond reach of the fool;
he has nothing to say in court.[d]
8 The person who plans on doing evil
will be called a schemer.
9 To devise folly is sin,
and people detest a scoffer.
10 If you grow weary when times are troubled,
your strength is limited.[e]
11 Rescue those who are being led away to death,
and save those who stumble toward slaughter.
12 If you say, “Look here, we didn’t know about this,”
doesn’t God,[f] who examines motives,[g] discern it?
Doesn’t the one who guards your soul
know about it?
Won’t he repay each person
according to what he has done?
13 My son, eat honey, because it’s good for you;[h]
indeed, drippings from the honeycomb are sweet to your taste;
14 Keep in mind that wisdom is like that for your soul;
if you find it, there will be a future for you,
and what you hope for won’t be cut short.
15 Don’t lie in wait like an outlaw
to attack where the righteous live;
16 for though a righteous man falls seven times,
he will rise again,
but the wicked stumble into calamity.
17 Don’t rejoice when your enemy falls;
don’t let yourself be glad when he stumbles.
18 Otherwise the Lord will observe and disapprove,
and he will turn his anger away from him.
19 Don’t be anxious about those who practice evil,
and don’t be envious of the wicked.
20 For the wicked man has no future;
the lamp of the wicked will be extinguished.
21 My son, fear both the Lord and the king,
and don’t keep company with rebels.
22 They will be destroyed suddenly,
and who knows what kind of punishment will come from these two?
Sayings of the Wise
23 Here are some more proverbs from wise people:
It isn’t good to show partiality in judgment.
24 Whoever says to the wicked, “You’re in the right,”
will be cursed by people and hated by nations.
25 But as for people who rebuke the wicked;[i]
a good blessing will fall upon them.
26 A kiss on the lips—
that’s what someone who gives an honest answer deserves.[j]
27 First do your outside work,
preparing your land for yourself.
After that, build your house.
28 Don’t testify against your neighbor without a cause,
and don’t lie when you speak.[k]
29 Don’t say, “I’ll do to him like he did to me,
I’ll be sure to pay him back for what he did.”
30 I went by the field belonging to a lazy man,
by a vineyard belonging to a senseless person.
31 There it was, overgrown with thistles,
the ground covered with thorns,
its stone wall collapsed.
32 As I observed, I thought about it;
I watched, and learned a lesson:
33 “A little sleep! A little slumber!
A little folding of my hands to rest!”
34 Then your poverty will come upon you like a robber,
your need like an armed bandit.
