13 El hijo sabio acepta la corrección de su padre; el descarado no quiere escucharla.
2 El que habla el bien, cosechará el bien, pero los traidores tienen hambre de violencia.
3 El que cuida sus palabras, cuida su vida; el que descuida sus palabras provoca su propia ruina.
4 El perezoso desea mucho pero obtiene poco; el que trabaja obtendrá todo lo que desea.
5 El hombre justo detesta la mentira, pero el malvado trae deshonra y vergüenza.
6 La justicia protege al hombre que es recto, pero la maldad destruye al pecador.
7 Hay pobres que aparentan ser ricos, hay ricos que aparentan ser pobres.
8 El rico puede salvar su vida con sus riquezas, pero al pobre ni siquiera lo amenazan.
9 La luz de los justos brilla intensamente, pero los malvados son como lámpara apagada.
10 El orgullo conduce a la discusión, pero en los que escuchan consejos hay sabiduría.
11 La riqueza mal ganada pronto se esfuma; la obtenida poco a poco se multiplica.
12 La esperanza frustrada trae angustia al corazón, pero el deseo cumplido es como un árbol de vida.
13 El que menosprecia la instrucción, pagará las consecuencias; el que la respeta recibirá su recompensa.
14 La enseñanza del sabio es fuente de vida, y libra de los lazos de la muerte.
15 El buen juicio trae aprecio, pero el camino del traidor lleva a la ruina.
16 El prudente actúa con inteligencia, pero el necio presume su necedad.
17 El mensajero malvado trae desgracia, pero el confiable trae alivio.
18 El que rechaza la corrección caerá en pobreza y deshonra; el que la acepta, recibirá grandes honores.
19 El deseo cumplido trae alegría, pero el necio detesta alejarse del mal.
20 El que anda con sabios, será sabio; al que anda con necios, lo lastimarán.
21 Al pecador lo persiguen los problemas; pero al justo lo recompensan las bendiciones.
22 El hombre bueno deja herencia a sus nietos; las riquezas del pecador se quedan para los justo.
23 En el campo del pobre abunda la comida, pero la injusticia acaba con todo.
24 El que no corrige a su hijo, no lo quiere; el que lo ama, lo corrige.
25 El justo come hasta quedar satisfecho, pero el malvado se queda con hambre.

Mas el burlador no escucha las reprensiones.
2 Del fruto de su boca el hombre comerá el bien;
Mas el alma de los prevaricadores hallará el mal.
3 El que guarda su boca guarda su alma;
Mas el que mucho abre sus labios tendrá calamidad.
4 El alma del perezoso desea, y nada alcanza;
Mas el alma de los diligentes será prosperada.
5 El justo aborrece la palabra de mentira;
Mas el impío se hace odioso e infame.
6 La justicia guarda al de perfecto camino;
Mas la impiedad trastornará al pecador.
7 Hay quienes pretenden ser ricos, y no tienen nada;
Y hay quienes pretenden ser pobres, y tienen muchas riquezas.
8 El rescate de la vida del hombre está en sus riquezas;
Pero el pobre no oye censuras.
9 La luz de los justos se alegrará;
Mas se apagará la lámpara de los impíos.
10 Ciertamente la soberbia concebirá contienda;
Mas con los avisados está la sabiduría.
11 Las riquezas de vanidad disminuirán;
Pero el que recoge con mano laboriosa las aumenta.
12 La esperanza que se demora es tormento del corazón;
Pero árbol de vida es el deseo cumplido.
13 El que menosprecia el precepto perecerá por ello;
Mas el que teme el mandamiento será recompensado.
14 La ley del sabio es manantial de vida
Para apartarse de los lazos de la muerte.
15 El buen entendimiento da gracia;
Mas el camino de los transgresores es duro.
16 Todo hombre prudente procede con sabiduría;
Mas el necio manifestará necedad.
17 El mal mensajero acarrea desgracia;
Mas el mensajero fiel acarrea salud.
18 Pobreza y vergüenza tendrá el que menosprecia el consejo;
Mas el que guarda la corrección recibirá honra.
19 El deseo cumplido regocija el alma;
Pero apartarse del mal es abominación a los necios.
20 El que anda con sabios, sabio será;
Mas el que se junta con necios será quebrantado.
21 El mal perseguirá a los pecadores,
Mas los justos serán premiados con el bien.
22 El bueno dejará herederos a los hijos de sus hijos;
Pero la riqueza del pecador está guardada para el justo.
23 En el barbecho de los pobres hay mucho pan;
Mas se pierde por falta de juicio.
24 El que detiene el castigo, a su hijo aborrece;
Mas el que lo ama, desde temprano lo corrige.
25 El justo come hasta saciar su alma;
Mas el vientre de los impíos tendrá necesidad.

1 A wise son loves correction,
but the scoffer heeds no rebuke.[a]
2 From the fruit of the mouth one enjoys good things,(A)
but from the throat of the treacherous comes violence.[b]
3 Those who guard their mouths preserve themselves;[c]
those who open wide their lips bring ruin.(B)
4 The appetite of the sluggard craves but has nothing,
but the appetite of the diligent is amply satisfied.
5 The just hate deceitful words,
but the wicked are odious and disgraceful.
6 Justice guards one who walks honestly,
but sin leads the wicked astray.(C)
7 One acts rich but has nothing;
another acts poor but has great wealth.[d]
8 People’s riches serve as ransom for their lives,
but the poor do not even hear a threat.[e]
9 The light of the just gives joy,
but the lamp[f] of the wicked goes out.(D)
10 The stupid sow discord by their insolence,
but wisdom is with those who take counsel.
11 Wealth won quickly dwindles away,
but gathered little by little, it grows.(E)
12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a wish fulfilled is a tree of life.[g]
13 Whoever despises the word must pay for it,[h]
but whoever reveres the command will be rewarded.
14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
turning one from the snares of death.
15 Good sense brings favor,
but the way of the faithless is their ruin.[i]
16 The shrewd always act prudently
but the foolish parade folly.[j]
17 A wicked messenger brings on disaster,
but a trustworthy envoy is a healing remedy.
18 Poverty and shame befall those who let go of discipline,
but those who hold on to reproof receive honor.[k]
19 Desire fulfilled delights the soul,
but turning from evil is an abomination to fools.
20 Walk with the wise and you become wise,
but the companion of fools fares badly.(F)
21 Misfortune pursues sinners,
but the just shall be recompensed with good.
22 The good leave an inheritance to their children’s children,
but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the just.
23 The tillage of the poor yields abundant food,
but possessions are swept away for lack of justice.[l]
24 Whoever spares the rod hates the child,
but whoever loves will apply discipline.(G)
25 When the just eat, their hunger is appeased;
but the belly of the wicked suffers want.

- 13:1 Another in the series on the household, this one on the relation of parents and children. See under 10:1. The scoffer in Proverbs condemns discipline and thus can never become wise. Wise adult children advertise to the community what they received from their parents, for children become wise through a dialectical process involving the parents. A foolish adult child witnesses to foolish parents.
- 13:2 One’s mouth normally eats food from outside, but in the moral life, things are reversed: one eats from the fruit of one’s mouth, i.e., one experiences the consequences of one’s own actions. Since the mouth of the treacherous is filled with violence, one must assume that they will some day endure violence.
- 13:3 Preserve themselves: in Hebrew, literally to preserve the throat area, the moist breathing center of one’s body, thus “life,” “soul,” or “self.” There is wordplay: if you guard your mouth (= words) you guard your “soul.” Fools, on the other hand, do not guard but open their lips and disaster strikes. A near duplicate is 21:23.
- 13:7 Appearances can be deceiving; possessions do not always reveal the true state of a person.
- 13:8 Related to v. 7. Possessions enable the wealthy to pay ransom but the poor are “protected” by lack of possessions: they never hear the threat of the pursuer. Cf. the use of the word “threat” in Is 30:17.
- 13:9 Light…lamp: symbols of life and prosperity; cf. 4:18–19.
- 13:12 “Tree of life” occurs in Gn 2–3, Prv 3:18; 11:30; 13:12; 15:4, and Rev 2:7; 22:2, 14, 19. It provides food and healing.
- 13:13 Must pay for it: lit., “is pledge to it,” i.e., just as one who has pledged or provided surety for another’s loan is obligated to that pledge, so one is not free of a command until one performs it.
- 13:15 As the behavior of the wise wins them favor that increases their prosperity, like Abigail with David in 1 Sm 25, so the way (= conduct) of the faithless ruins their lives.
- 13:16 Like 12:23 and 15:2, 3, the saying is about revealing and concealing. The wise reveal their wisdom in their actions whereas fools “parade,” spread out their folly for all to see. The verb is used of vendors spreading their wares and of birds spreading their wings.
- 13:18 The saying plays on letting go and holding on. Wisdom consists in not rejecting discipline and being open to the comments of others, even if they are reproving comments.
- 13:23 An observation on the poor. The lands of the poor are as fertile as anyone’s, for nature does not discriminate against them. Their problem is lack of justice, which puts their harvest at risk from unscrupulous human beings.

But those who do wrong stink and bring shame on themselves.
6 Doing right guards those who are honest.
But evil destroys those who are sinful.
7 Some people pretend to be rich but have nothing.
Others pretend to be poor but have great wealth.
8 A person’s riches might save their life.
But a poor person is not able to do anything about danger.
9 The lights of godly people shine brightly.
But the lamps of sinners are blown out.
10 Where there is arguing, there is pride.
But those who take advice are wise.
11 Money gained in the wrong way disappears.
But money gathered little by little grows.
12 Hope that is put off makes one sick at heart.
But a desire that is met is like a tree of life.
13 Anyone who hates what they are taught will pay for it later.
But a person who respects a command will be rewarded.

It turns those who listen to it away from the jaws of death.
15 Good judgment wins favor.
But the way of liars leads to their ruin.
16 Wise people act with knowledge.
But foolish people show how foolish they are.
17 An evil messenger gets into trouble.
But a trusted messenger brings healing.
18 Those who turn away from their training become poor and ashamed.
But those who accept warnings are honored.
19 A desire that is met is like something that tastes sweet.
But foolish people hate to turn away from evil.
20 Walk with wise people and become wise.
A companion of foolish people suffers harm.
21 Hard times chase those who are sinful.
But those who do right are rewarded with good things.
22 A good person leaves what they own to their children and grandchildren.
But a sinner’s wealth is stored up for those who do right.
23 An unplowed field produces food for poor people.
But those who treat them badly destroy it all.
24 Those who don’t correct their children hate them.
But those who love them are careful to correct them.
25 Those who do right eat until they are full.
But the stomachs of those who do wrong go hungry.
