VI. DETTI DI AGUR
30 Detti di Agùr figlio di Iakè, da Massa.
Dice quest'uomo: Sono stanco, o Dio,
sono stanco, o Dio, e vengo meno,
2 perché io sono il più ignorante degli uomini
e non ho intelligenza umana;
3 non ho imparato la sapienza
e ignoro la scienza del Santo.
4 Chi è salito al cielo e ne è sceso?
Chi ha raccolto il vento nel suo pugno?
Chi ha racchiuso le acque nel suo mantello?
Chi ha fissato tutti i confini della terra?
Come si chiama? Qual è il nome di suo figlio, se lo sai?
5 Ogni parola di Dio è appurata;
egli è uno scudo per chi ricorre a lui.
6 Non aggiungere nulla alle sue parole,
perché non ti riprenda e tu sia trovato bugiardo.
7 Io ti domando due cose,
non negarmele prima che io muoia:
8 tieni lontano da me falsità e menzogna,
non darmi né povertà né ricchezza;
ma fammi avere il cibo necessario,
9 perché, una volta sazio, io non ti rinneghi
e dica: «Chi è il Signore?»,
oppure, ridotto all'indigenza, non rubi
e profani il nome del mio Dio.
10 Non calunniare lo schiavo presso il padrone,
perché egli non ti maledica e tu non ne porti la pena.
11 C'è gente che maledice suo padre
e non benedice sua madre.
12 C'è gente che si crede pura,
ma non si è lavata della sua lordura.
13 C'è gente dagli occhi così alteri
e dalle ciglia così altezzose!
14 C'è gente i cui denti sono spade
e i cui molari sono coltelli,
per divorare gli umili eliminandoli dalla terra
e i poveri in mezzo agli uomini.
VII. PROVERBI NUMERICI
15 La sanguisuga ha due figlie: «Dammi! Dammi!».
Tre cose non si saziano mai,
anzi quattro non dicono mai: «Basta!»:
16 gli inferi, il grembo sterile,
la terra mai sazia d'acqua
e il fuoco che mai dice: «Basta!».
17 L'occhio che guarda con scherno il padre
e disprezza l'obbedienza alla madre
sia cavato dai corvi della valle
e divorato dagli aquilotti.
18 Tre cose mi sono difficili,
anzi quattro, che io non comprendo:
19 il sentiero dell'aquila nell'aria,
il sentiero del serpente sulla roccia,
il sentiero della nave in alto mare,
il sentiero dell'uomo in una giovane.
20 Tale è la condotta della donna adultera:
mangia e si pulisce la bocca
e dice: «Non ho fatto niente di male!».
21 Per tre cose freme la terra,
anzi quattro cose non può sopportare:
22 uno schiavo che diventi re,
uno stolto che abbia viveri in abbondanza,
23 una donna gia trascurata da tutti che trovi marito
e una schiava che prenda il posto della padrona.
24 Quattro esseri sono fra le cose più piccole della terra,
eppure sono i più saggi dei saggi:
25 le formiche, popolo senza forza,
che si provvedono il cibo durante l'estate;
26 gli iràci, popolo imbelle,
ma che hanno la tana sulle rupi;
27 le cavallette, che non hanno un re,
eppure marciano tutte insieme schierate;
28 la lucertola, che si può prender con le mani,
ma penetra anche nei palazzi dei re.
29 Tre esseri hanno un portamento maestoso,
anzi quattro sono eleganti nel camminare:
30 il leone, il più forte degli animali,
che non indietreggia davanti a nessuno;
31 il gallo pettoruto e il caprone
e un re alla testa del suo popolo.
32 Se ti sei esaltato per stoltezza
e se poi hai riflettuto,
mettiti una mano sulla bocca,
33 poiché, sbattendo il latte ne esce la panna,
premendo il naso ne esce il sangue,
spremendo la collera ne esce la lite.

Het Boek
30 Dit zijn de woorden van Agur, de zoon van Jake—het zijn woorden van God. De strijder zegt: ‘God, ik heb zoveel moeite gedaan, ik kan niet meer!
2 Ik schiet tegenover iedereen tekort en het ontbreekt mij aan verstand.
3 Ik heb geen wijsheid verkregen en begrijp ook niets van alles wat heilig is.’
4 Wie ging er naar de hemel en kwam weer terug? Wie houdt de wind stevig vast? Wie heeft al het water in een mantel gebonden? Wie gaf de aarde haar vorm en omtrek? Hoe heet Hij en hoe heet zijn Zoon? Zeg het mij als u het weet.
5 Gods woorden zijn puur en zuiver, Hij beschermt ieder die op Hem vertrouwt.
6 Voeg niets aan zijn woorden toe, want dan straft Hij u, omdat u een leugenaar bent.
7 God, ik heb twee dingen aan U gevraagd en geef mij die alstublieft voordat ik sterf:
8 houd ongeloof en leugens bij mij weg, geef mij armoe noch rijkdom, maar alleen wat ik nodig heb.
9 Want als ik verzadigd zou zijn, zou ik U misschien verloochenen door te zeggen: ‘Wie is de Here?’ En als ik arm was, zou ik misschien gaan stelen en daardoor uw naam oneer aandoen.
10 Klaag een knecht niet aan bij zijn meester, anders vervloekt hij u misschien en beschouwt God u als schuldig.
11 Er zijn mensen die hun ouders vervloeken,
12 mensen die zichzelf goed vinden, maar in werkelijkheid zondig zijn,
13 mensen die hooghartig om zich heen kijken en anderen verachten,
14 mensen die hun tanden als zwaarden en hun kiezen als messen gebruiken, om daarmee de noodlijdenden en de armen te vermalen.
15 De bloedzuiger heeft twee dochters: ze zijn onverzadigbaar en willen steeds meer. Drie dingen zijn absoluut niet te verzadigen, voor de volgende vier dingen is het nooit genoeg:
16 het graf, een onvruchtbare baarmoeder, de aarde die nooit genoeg water heeft, en het vuur. Geen van die vier zegt ooit: ‘Nu is het genoeg.’
17 Het oog waaruit minachting voor een vader spreekt of dat opstandig kijkt naar een moeder, wordt uitgepikt door de raven bij de beek, wordt voedsel voor de jonge adelaars.
18 Veel dingen zijn voor mij onbegrijpelijk, de volgende vier kan ik niet bevatten:
19 een adelaar die hoog aan de hemel zweeft, een slang die moeiteloos over een gladde rots kruipt, een schip dat veilig door de golven vaart en wat gebeurt tussen een man en zijn jonge vrouw.
20 En minstens zo onbegrijpelijk is het gedrag van een vrouw die overspel pleegt: zij zondigt, kleedt zich weer aan en zegt: ‘Ik heb niets verkeerds gedaan.’
21 Mensen hebben een afschuw van veel dingen en de volgende vier dingen zijn onverdraaglijk:
22 een knecht die macht krijgt, een dwaas die in weelde leeft,
23 een verbitterde vrouw die toch trouwt en een dienares die de plaats van haar meesteres inneemt.
24 De volgende vier zijn weliswaar klein, maar hebben van God grote wijsheid gekregen:
25 de mieren hebben weliswaar geen verstand, maar zijn toch zo verstandig in de zomer hun voedsel te verzamelen,
26 klipdassen mogen dan redeloze dieren zijn, maar hebben wel hun hol in de rotsen,
27 hoewel sprinkhanen geen leider hebben, trekken zij op in geordende groepen,
28 de hagedis is met de hand te pakken, maar leeft zelfs in koninklijke paleizen.
29 Er zijn veel indrukwekkende dingen op aarde, de volgende vier bijvoorbeeld:
30 een oude leeuw, een bejaarde koning der dieren die voor niemand aan de kant gaat,
31 een soepel rennende windhond, een trotse bok en een onoverwinnelijke koning.
32 Hebt u in uw woede dwaas gehandeld of hebt u kwaad in de zin, zwijg dan en voer uw plan niet uit!
33 Want door melk te karnen ontstaat boter, door te hard op de neus te drukken ontstaat een bloedneus en door woede op te wekken ontstaat ruzie.

30 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,
2 Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.
3 I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.
4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?
5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:
8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:
9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.
10 Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.
11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.
12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.
13 There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.
14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.
15 The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:
16 The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.
17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.
18 There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:
19 The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.
20 Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.
21 For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:
22 For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat;
23 For an odious woman when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress.
24 There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:
25 The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;
26 The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;
27 The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;
28 The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces.
29 There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going:
30 A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any;
31 A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.
32 If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth.
33 Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.
