27 Non ti vantare del domani,
perché non sai neppure che cosa genera l'oggi.
2 Ti lodi un altro e non la tua bocca,
un estraneo e non le tue labbra.
3 La pietra è greve, la sabbia è pesante,
ma più dell'una e dell'altra
lo è il fastidio dello stolto.
4 La collera è crudele, l'ira è impetuosa;
ma chi può resistere alla gelosia?
5 Meglio un rimprovero aperto
che un amore celato.
6 Leali sono le ferite di un amico,
fallaci i baci di un nemico.
7 Gola sazia disprezza il miele;
per chi ha fame anche l'amaro è dolce.
8 Come un uccello che vola lontano dal nido
così è l'uomo che va errando lontano dalla dimora.
9 Il profumo e l'incenso allietano il cuore,
la dolcezza di un amico rassicura l'anima.
10 Non abbandonare il tuo amico né quello di tuo padre,
non entrare nella casa di tuo fratello
nel giorno della tua disgrazia.
Meglio un amico vicino che un fratello lontano.
11 Sii saggio, figlio mio, e allieterai il mio cuore
e avrò di che rispondere a colui che mi insulta.
12 L'accorto vede il pericolo e si nasconde,
gli inesperti vanno avanti e la pagano.
13 Prendigli il vestito
perché si è fatto garante per uno straniero
e tienilo in pegno per gli sconosciuti.
14 Benedire il prossimo di buon mattino ad alta voce
gli sarà imputato come una maledizione.
15 Il gocciolar continuo in tempo di pioggia
e una moglie litigiosa, si rassomigliano:
16 chi la vuol trattenere, trattiene il vento
e raccoglie l'olio con la mano destra.
17 Il ferro si aguzza con il ferro
e l'uomo aguzza l'ingegno del suo compagno.
18 Il guardiano di un fico ne mangia i frutti,
chi ha cura del suo padrone ne riceverà onori.
19 Come un volto differisce da un altro,
così i cuori degli uomini differiscono fra di loro.
20 Come gli inferi e l'abisso non si saziano mai,
così non si saziano mai gli occhi dell'uomo.
21 Come il crogiuolo è per l'argento
e il fornello per l'oro,
così l'uomo rispetto alla bocca di chi lo loda.
22 Anche se tu pestassi lo stolto nel mortaio
tra i grani con il pestello,
non scuoteresti da lui la sua stoltezza.
23 Preòccupati del tuo gregge,
abbi cura delle tue mandrie,
24 perché non sono perenni le ricchezze,
né un tesoro si trasmette di generazione in generazione.
25 Si toglie il fieno, apparisce l'erba nuova
e si raccolgono i foraggi dei monti;
26 gli agnelli ti danno le vesti
e i capretti il prezzo per comprare un campo,
27 le capre latte abbondante per il cibo
e per vitto della tua famiglia.
e per mantenere le tue schiave.

27 Non vantarti del domani, perché non sai che cosa può produrre un giorno.
2 Ti lodi un altro e non la tua bocca, un estraneo e non le tue labbra.
3 La pietra è grave e la sabbia pesante, ma l'ira dello stolto pesa piú di tutt'e due.
4 L'ira è crudele e la collera impetuosa, ma chi può resistere alla gelosia?
5 Meglio una riprensione aperta che un amore nascosto.
6 Fedeli sono le ferite di un amico, ma ingannevoli sono i baci di un nemico.
7 Chi è sazio disprezza il favo di miele ma per chi ha fame ogni cosa amara è dolce.
8 Come l'uccello che erra lontano dal nido, cosí è l'uomo che erra lontano da casa sua.
9 L'olio e il profumo rallegrano il cuore, cosí fa la dolcezza di un amico con i suoi consigli cordiali.
10 Non abbandonare il tuo amico né l'amico di tuo padre e non andare in casa di tuo fratello nel giorno della tua sventura; è meglio uno che abita vicino che un fratello lontano.
11 Figlio mio, sii saggio e rallegra il mio cuore, cosí potrò rispondere a chi inveisce contro di me.
12 L'uomo accorto vede il male e si nasconde, ma i semplici vanno oltre e sono puniti.
13 Prendi il vestito di chi si è reso garante per un estraneo e tienilo come pegno per la donna straniera.
14 Chi benedice il suo vicino ad alta voce al mattino presto, gli sarà attribuito come maledizione.
15 Un gocciolare incessante in un giorno di gran pioggia e una donna litigiosa si rassomigliano.
16 Chi riesce a trattenerla, trattiene il vento e afferra l'olio con la sua mano destra.
17 Il ferro affila il ferro, cosí l'uomo affila il volto del suo compagno.
18 Chi ha cura del fico ne mangerà il frutto, e chi serve il suo padrone sarà onorato.
19 Come nell'acqua il viso riflette il viso, cosí il cuore dell'uomo rivela l'uomo.
20 Lo Sceol, e Abaddon, sono insaziabili, e insaziabili sono pure gli occhi degli uomini.
21 Il crogiolo è per l'argento e la fornace per l'oro, cosí l'uomo è provato dalla lode che riceve.
22 Anche se tu pestassi lo stolto in un mortaio tra il grano con un pestello, la sua stoltezza non si allontanerebbe da lui.
23 Cerca di conoscere bene lo stato delle tue pecore e abbi cura delle tue mandrie,
24 perché le ricchezze non durano sempre, e neppure una corona dura di generazione in generazione.
25 Quando il fieno è portato via ed appare l'erba tenera e si raccoglie il foraggio dei monti,
26 gli agnelli provvederanno le tue vesti, i capri il prezzo di un campo
27 e le capre abbastanza latte per il tuo cibo, per il cibo della tua casa e per il mantenimento delle tue serve.

27 Don’t boast about tomorrow,
for you don’t know what a day might bring.(A)
2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth—
a stranger, and not your own lips.(B)
3 A stone is heavy, and sand a burden,
but aggravation from a fool outweighs them both.
4 Fury is cruel, and anger a flood,
but who can withstand jealousy?(C)
5 Better an open reprimand
than concealed love.(D)
7 A person who is full tramples on a honeycomb,(G)
but to a hungry person, any bitter thing is sweet.
8 Anyone wandering from his home
is like a bird wandering from its nest.(H)
9 Oil(I) and incense bring joy to the heart,
and the sweetness of a friend is better than self-counsel.[a]
10 Don’t abandon your friend or your father’s friend,(J)
and don’t go to your brother’s house
in your time of calamity;
better a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.(K)
12 A sensible person sees danger and takes cover;
the inexperienced keep going and are punished.(N)
13 Take his garment,
for he has put up security for a stranger;
get collateral if it is for foreigners.[b](O)
14 If one blesses his neighbor
with a loud voice early in the morning,
it will be counted as a curse to him.
15 An endless dripping on a rainy day
and a nagging wife are alike;(P)
16 the one who controls her controls the wind
and grasps oil with his right hand.
17 Iron sharpens iron,
and one person sharpens another.[c]
18 Whoever tends a fig tree(Q) will eat its fruit,(R)
and whoever looks after his master will be honored.
19 As water reflects the face,
so the heart reflects the person.
21 As a crucible refines silver,
and a smelter refines gold,
so a person should refine his praise.(V)
22 Though you grind a fool
in a mortar with a pestle along with grain,
you will not separate his foolishness from him.(W)
23 Know well the condition of your flock,(X)
and pay attention to your herds,
24 for wealth is not forever;(Y)
not even a crown lasts for all time.
25 When hay is removed and new growth appears
and the grain from the hills is gathered in,
26 lambs will provide your clothing,
and goats, the price of a field;
27 there will be enough goat’s milk for your food—
food for your household
and nourishment for your female servants.(Z)

2 Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth;
an outsider, and not your own lips.(C)

but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.
4 Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming,
but who can stand before jealousy?(E)
5 Better is open rebuke
than hidden love.
6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted,
but an enemy multiplies kisses.(F)
7 One who is full loathes honey from the comb,
but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.
8 Like a bird that flees its nest(G)
is anyone who flees from home.
9 Perfume(H) and incense bring joy to the heart,
and the pleasantness of a friend
springs from their heartfelt advice.
10 Do not forsake your friend or a friend of your family,
and do not go to your relative’s house when disaster(I) strikes you—
better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away.
11 Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart;(J)
then I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt.(K)
12 The prudent see danger and take refuge,
but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.(L)
13 Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger;
hold it in pledge if it is done for an outsider.(M)
14 If anyone loudly blesses their neighbor early in the morning,
it will be taken as a curse.
15 A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping(N)
of a leaky roof in a rainstorm;
16 restraining her is like restraining the wind
or grasping oil with the hand.
17 As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another.
18 The one who guards a fig tree will eat its fruit,(O)
and whoever protects their master will be honored.(P)

so one’s life reflects the heart.[a]
21 The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,(S)
but people are tested by their praise.
22 Though you grind a fool in a mortar,
grinding them like grain with a pestle,
you will not remove their folly from them.
23 Be sure you know the condition of your flocks,(T)
give careful attention to your herds;
24 for riches do not endure forever,(U)
and a crown is not secure for all generations.
25 When the hay is removed and new growth appears
and the grass from the hills is gathered in,
26 the lambs will provide you with clothing,
and the goats with the price of a field.
27 You will have plenty of goats’ milk to feed your family
and to nourish your female servants.
