18 Chi si separa dagli altri cerca
la sua propria soddisfazione,
e si irrita contro tutto ciò che è giusto.
2 Lo stolto prende piacere, non nella
prudenza,
ma soltanto nel manifestare ciò che ha nel cuore.
3 Quando viene l'empio, viene anche
il disprezzo;
e, con la vergogna, viene il disonore.
4 Le parole della bocca di un uomo
sono acque profonde;
la fonte di saggezza è un ruscello che
scorre perenne.
5 Non è bene avere per l'empio dei
riguardi personali,
per fare torto al giusto nel giudizio.
6 Le labbra dello stolto causano liti,
e la sua bocca attira percosse.
7 La bocca dello stolto è la sua rovina,
e le sue labbra sono un laccio per la sua anima.
8 Le parole del maldicente sono come ghiottonerie,
e penetrano fino all'intimo delle viscere.
9 Anche colui che è sfaticato nel suo
lavoro
è fratello del dissipatore.
10 Il nome del Signore è una forte
torre;
il giusto vi corre, e vi trova un alto
rifugio.
11 I beni del ricco sono la sua
roccaforte;
sono come un'alta muraglia…
nella sua immaginazione.
12 Prima della rovina, il cuore
dell'uomo s'innalza,
ma l'umiltà precede la gloria.
13 Chi risponde prima di avere
ascoltato,
mostra la sua follia, e rimane confuso.
14 Lo spirito dell'uomo lo sostiene
quand'egli è infermo; ma lo spirito
abbattuto chi lo solleverà?
15 Il cuore dell'uomo intelligente
acquista la scienza,
e l'orecchio dei saggi la cerca.
16 I regali che uno fa gli aprono
la strada
e gli danno accesso tra i grandi.
17 Il primo a perorare la propria causa pare che abbia ragione;
ma viene l'altra parte, e lo mette alla
prova.
18 La sorte fa cessare le liti
e decide fra i grandi.
19 Un fratello offeso è piú
inespugnabile di una fortezza;
e le liti tra fratelli sono come le sbarre di un castello.
20 Con il frutto della sua bocca l'uomo sazia il corpo;
si sazia con il frutto delle sue labbra.
21 Morte e vita sono in potere della
lingua;
chi l'ama ne mangerà i frutti.
22 Chi ha trovato moglie ha trovato
un bene
e ha ottenuto un favore dal Signore.
23 Il povero parla supplicando,
e il ricco risponde con durezza.
24 Chi ha molti amici può esserne
sopraffatto,
ma c'è un amico che è piú affezionato
di un fratello.

18 An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends
and against all sound judgment starts quarrels.
2 Fools find no pleasure in understanding
but delight in airing their own opinions.(A)
3 When wickedness comes, so does contempt,
and with shame comes reproach.
4 The words of the mouth are deep waters,(B)
but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream.
6 The lips of fools bring them strife,
and their mouths invite a beating.(E)
8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels;
they go down to the inmost parts.(H)
9 One who is slack in his work
is brother to one who destroys.(I)
11 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city;(L)
they imagine it a wall too high to scale.
12 Before a downfall the heart is haughty,
but humility comes before honor.(M)
13 To answer before listening—
that is folly and shame.(N)
14 The human spirit can endure in sickness,
but a crushed spirit who can bear?(O)
15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge,(P)
for the ears of the wise seek it out.
16 A gift(Q) opens the way
and ushers the giver into the presence of the great.
17 In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right,
until someone comes forward and cross-examines.
18 Casting the lot settles disputes(R)
and keeps strong opponents apart.
19 A brother wronged(S) is more unyielding than a fortified city;
disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel.
20 From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled;
with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied.(T)
23 The poor plead for mercy,
but the rich answer harshly.
24 One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.(Y)
