19 人をだまして金持ちになるより、
貧しくても正直に生きるほうが幸せです。
2 よく調べもせずに突っ走るのは、
失敗のもとです。
3 人は自分の不注意でチャンスを逃しては、
それを主のせいにします。
4 金持ちには友がたくさんできますが、
貧しい人にはだれも寄りつきません。
5 偽証すれば罰せられ、
うそをつけば罰を免れません。
6 気前のいい人は大ぜいの人に好かれ、
だれとでも友になります。
7 貧しいと、
友ばかりか兄弟にもそっぽを向かれます。
どんなに呼んでも、去った人は戻りません。
8 知恵のある人は、
自分の一番大事な仕事を愛して成功します。
9 偽証すれば罰せられ、
うそをつけば捕まります。
10 愚か者が成功し、
使用人が主人を支配するのはふさわしくありません。
11 利口な人は侮辱されても、
忍耐を働かせて信用を得ます。
12 王の怒りはライオンのうなり声のように恐ろしく、
優しいことばは草に降りる露のように快いものです。
13 不従順な子は、
父にとってわずらわしい存在です。
文句ばかり言う妻は、
したたり続ける雨もりのようにやっかいです。
14 家や財産なら父親でも息子に残すことができます。
賢い妻は、主に与えていただくしかありません。
15 怠けて眠りこけてばかりいると、
そのうち飢えることになります。
16 いのちが惜しければ命令を守りなさい。
命令を無視する者は死にます。
17 貧しい人に手を差し伸べるのは、
主に貸すのと同じです。
あとで主が報いてくれます。
18 まだ望みのあるうちに子どもを懲らしめなさい。
放っておいて、その一生を台なしにしてはいけません。
19 短気な者が失敗したら、自分で後始末をさせなさい。
一度でも助けてやると、くり返すようになります。
20 忠告はできるだけ聞いて、賢く生きなさい。
21 人はたくさんの計画を立てますが、
主の計画だけが成るのです。
22 親切な人はだれにも好かれます。
貧しくても、うそつきよりは良いのです。
23 主を恐れることは、幸せで安全な生活のかぎです。
24 目の前に食べ物があるのに、
口に入れようともしない怠け者がいます。
25 人をさげすむ者を罰すれば見せしめになり、
知恵のある人をしかると、ますます賢くなります。
26 親に乱暴する者は辱めを受けます。
27 間違っていると思う教えを聞くのはやめなさい。
28 偽りの証人は正しい裁判を侮り、
こりずにまた罪を犯します。
29 さばきをさげすんで守らない者は、
きびしく罰せられます。
20 酒を飲むと気が大きくなり、
酔っぱらってけんかになります。
酒に飲まれて失敗する者は愚か者です。
2 王が怒るのは、ライオンがほえるようなものです。
王の怒りを買うといのちが危うくなります。
3 争いを避けるのは名誉なことです。
けんか好きなのは愚か者だけです。
4 冬のうちに耕しておかないと、
刈り入れ時になっても収穫は望めません。
5 人が心の中で考えていることを、
知恵のある人はうまく引き出して役立てます。
6 人はだれでも、自分を頼りになる友だと言いますが、
それがほんとうかどうかはわかりません。
7 子どもにとって一番の遺産は、
正直に生きることを教わることです。
8 裁判の席につく王は、あらゆる証拠を注意深く調べ、
ほんとうのこととうそとを見分けます。
9 「心を入れ替えたから、もう潔白だ」と、
だれが言えるでしょう。
10 神はごまかしやうそをきらいます。
11 小さな子どもでも、
行いが正しいかどうかを見れば性格がわかります。
12 目が見え、耳が聞こえるなら、
目と耳を与えてくれた神に感謝しなさい。
13 眠ってばかりいると貧しくなります。
目を覚まし、力いっぱい働けば、
食べるに事欠きません。
14 買手は、「こんな物どこがいいんだ」と言って値切りますが、
買ってしまうと、良いものを買ったと自慢します。
15 金や宝石を持っていることより、
思慮のあるほうが、ずっとすばらしいことです。
16 見ず知らずの人に金を貸すと、
それきりになるおそれがあります。
17 人をだまして喜んでいる人がいます。
しかし、だまし取った金で買ったパンは、
口の中でじゃりに変わるのです。
18 計画を立てるときは人の意見をよく聞き、
戦いを始めるのはみなが賛成してからにしなさい。
19 おしゃべり好きにうっかり秘密をもらすと、
世界中に喧伝されます。
20 親をのろう者は死ななければなりません。
21 思わぬ大金が転がり込むと、
かえって不幸になることがあります。
22 悪いことをされても仕返ししてはいけません。
主があなたを救うのを待ち望みなさい。
23 主はごまかしやうそをきらいます。
24 主が私たちの歩みを導いてくださいます。
人は自分に起こることすべてを理解することなど
できるでしょうか。
25 よく考えもしないで神に約束すると、
あとで大変なことになります。
26 知恵のある王は犯罪をなくすために、
犯人をきびしく罰します。
27 良心は心の中をはっきり照らして、
隠れた思いを明るみに出す、主の光です。
28 正しく思いやりのある王が治める国は、
何があっても揺らぎません。
29 若い人の良いところはその若さ、
老人のすばらしいところは豊富な経験です。
30 こらしめのむちは、
二度と悪いことをしないように教えるためです。
21 灌漑の水が流れ込むように、
主は王の心を思いのままに動かされます。
2 どんな行いでも、
もっともらしい理由をつければ正しく見えますが、
神はどんなつもりでそうしたかを見ます。
3 供え物をするより、
正しい人であるほうが主に喜ばれます。
4 高慢も、情欲も、
悪い行いも、みな罪です。
5 地道に努力すれば利益がもたらされ、
一儲けしようと急ぐと貧困がもたらされます。
6 不正で得た富はすぐなくなります。
それなのになぜ、危険を冒そうとするのでしょう。
7 悪者は不正を行ってばかりいますが、
いずれその悪事が戻ってきて、
自分を滅ぼすことになります。
8 行いを見ればその人がわかります。
悪人は悪いことをし、
正しい人は神の教えを守るのです。
9 怒りっぽい女とりっぱな家に住むより、
屋根裏部屋の隅で暮らすほうがましです。
10 悪人は人を傷つけるのが大好きで、
人に親切にしようなどとは考えもしません。
11 知恵のある人は聞くだけで学ぶことができます。
愚か者は、人をばかにする者が罰を受けるのを
見るまでは、学ぶことができません。
12 正しい方である神は、
悪者が家の中で何をしているのか知っていて、
その者にさばきを下します。
13 貧しい人を助けない者は、
自分が困ったときにも助けてもらえません。
14 贈り物をすれば、怒っている人も機嫌を直します。
15 正しい人は喜んで正しいことをし、
悪人を恐れさせます。
16 わきまえのない怠け者は、
のたれ死にするしかありません。
17 毎日遊び暮らしていると貧しくなります。
酒やぜいたく品は富をもたらしません。
18 最後に勝つのは、悪人ではなく正しい人です。
19 口うるさく不平ばかりこぼす女といるより、
荒野に住むほうがましです。
20 知恵のある人は将来に備えて貯金をし、
愚か者は考えもなしに金を使います。
21 正しく思いやりのある者になろうとする人は、
充実した生活を送り、人からもたたえられます。
22 知恵のある人は強い相手と戦っても負けません。
とりでに立てこもる敵も見事に打ち負かします。
23 口を開かないでいれば、
苦難に陥ることもありません。
24 人をばかにする者は傲慢で、
自分が一番だと思い上がっています。
25-26 怠け者は働きもしないで、やたらに欲しがり、
人をうらやむことしか知りません。
しかし神を恐れる人は、喜んで人に与えます。
27 神は悪人からの贈り物がきらいです。
何か下心があるときはなおさらです。
28 偽証すれば罰せられ、正直に証言すれば安全です。
29 悪人は強情ですが、
神を恐れる人は、悪いとわかれば素直に考え直します。
30 どんなに賢明な人でも、
どんなに良い教育を受けた人でも、
主と対等にやり合うことなどできません。
31 さあ、戦う準備をしなさい。
しかし、勝利は主によってもたらされます。

19 Better the poor whose walk is blameless
than a fool whose lips are perverse.(A)
2 Desire without knowledge is not good—
how much more will hasty feet miss the way!(B)
4 Wealth attracts many friends,
but even the closest friend of the poor person deserts them.(E)
7 The poor are shunned by all their relatives—
how much more do their friends avoid them!(K)
Though the poor pursue them with pleading,
they are nowhere to be found.[a](L)
8 The one who gets wisdom loves life;
the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.(M)
9 A false witness will not go unpunished,
and whoever pours out lies will perish.(N)
10 It is not fitting for a fool(O) to live in luxury—
how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!(P)
11 A person’s wisdom yields patience;(Q)
it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.
13 A foolish child is a father’s ruin,(U)
and a quarrelsome wife is like
the constant dripping of a leaky roof.(V)
15 Laziness brings on deep sleep,
and the shiftless go hungry.(Y)
16 Whoever keeps commandments keeps their life,
but whoever shows contempt for their ways will die.(Z)
17 Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord,(AA)
and he will reward them for what they have done.(AB)
18 Discipline your children, for in that there is hope;
do not be a willing party to their death.(AC)
19 A hot-tempered person must pay the penalty;
rescue them, and you will have to do it again.
20 Listen to advice and accept discipline,(AD)
and at the end you will be counted among the wise.(AE)
21 Many are the plans in a person’s heart,
but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.(AF)
22 What a person desires is unfailing love[b];
better to be poor than a liar.
23 The fear of the Lord leads to life;
then one rests content, untouched by trouble.(AG)
24 A sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
he will not even bring it back to his mouth!(AH)
25 Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence;
rebuke the discerning,(AI) and they will gain knowledge.(AJ)
26 Whoever robs their father and drives out their mother(AK)
is a child who brings shame and disgrace.
27 Stop listening to instruction, my son,(AL)
and you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28 A corrupt witness mocks at justice,
and the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.(AM)
29 Penalties are prepared for mockers,
and beatings for the backs of fools.(AN)
2 A king’s wrath strikes terror like the roar of a lion;(AS)
those who anger him forfeit their lives.(AT)
5 The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters,(AY)
but one who has insight draws them out.
6 Many claim to have unfailing love,
but a faithful person who can find?(AZ)
10 Differing weights and differing measures—
the Lord detests them both.(BG)
11 Even small children are known by their actions,
so is their conduct really pure(BH) and upright?
12 Ears that hear and eyes that see—
the Lord has made them both.(BI)
13 Do not love sleep or you will grow poor;(BJ)
stay awake and you will have food to spare.
14 “It’s no good, it’s no good!” says the buyer—
then goes off and boasts about the purchase.
15 Gold there is, and rubies in abundance,
but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.
16 Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger;
hold it in pledge(BK) if it is done for an outsider.(BL)
18 Plans are established by seeking advice;
so if you wage war, obtain guidance.(BO)
19 A gossip betrays a confidence;(BP)
so avoid anyone who talks too much.
20 If someone curses their father or mother,(BQ)
their lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness.(BR)
21 An inheritance claimed too soon
will not be blessed at the end.
22 Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!”(BS)
Wait for the Lord, and he will avenge you.(BT)
23 The Lord detests differing weights,
and dishonest scales do not please him.(BU)
24 A person’s steps are directed(BV) by the Lord.(BW)
How then can anyone understand their own way?(BX)
25 It is a trap to dedicate something rashly
and only later to consider one’s vows.(BY)
26 A wise king winnows out the wicked;
he drives the threshing wheel over them.(BZ)
29 The glory of young men is their strength,
gray hair the splendor of the old.(CE)
21 In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water
that he channels toward all who please him.(CH)
2 A person may think their own ways are right,
but the Lord weighs the heart.(CI)
3 To do what is right and just
is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.(CJ)
4 Haughty eyes(CK) and a proud heart—
the unplowed field of the wicked—produce sin.
5 The plans of the diligent lead to profit(CL)
as surely as haste leads to poverty.
7 The violence of the wicked will drag them away,(CN)
for they refuse to do what is right.
8 The way of the guilty is devious,(CO)
but the conduct of the innocent is upright.
9 Better to live on a corner of the roof
than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.(CP)
10 The wicked crave evil;
their neighbors get no mercy from them.
11 When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom;
by paying attention to the wise they get knowledge.(CQ)
14 A gift given in secret soothes anger,
and a bribe concealed in the cloak pacifies great wrath.(CU)
15 When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous
but terror to evildoers.(CV)
16 Whoever strays from the path of prudence
comes to rest in the company of the dead.(CW)
17 Whoever loves pleasure will become poor;
whoever loves wine and olive oil will never be rich.(CX)
18 The wicked become a ransom(CY) for the righteous,
and the unfaithful for the upright.
19 Better to live in a desert
than with a quarrelsome and nagging wife.(CZ)
20 The wise store up choice food and olive oil,
but fools gulp theirs down.
22 One who is wise can go up against the city of the mighty(DC)
and pull down the stronghold in which they trust.
24 The proud and arrogant person(DF)—“Mocker” is his name—
behaves with insolent fury.
25 The craving of a sluggard will be the death of him,(DG)
because his hands refuse to work.
26 All day long he craves for more,
but the righteous(DH) give without sparing.(DI)
27 The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable(DJ)—
how much more so when brought with evil intent!(DK)
29 The wicked put up a bold front,
but the upright give thought to their ways.(DN)
31 The horse is made ready for the day of battle,
but victory rests with the Lord.(DQ)

13 上に立つ権威に従いなさい。神がお立てになった権威だからです。神によらない権威はどこにもありません。 2 ですから、国の法律に従わない者は、神に従うことを拒んでいるのです。その人は必ず罰せられます。 3 正しいことをしている人は支配者を恐れません。しかし、悪いことをしている人は、いつも支配者を恐れるのです。ですから、びくびくしたくなければ正しいことを行いなさい。そうすれば安心して過ごせます。 4 支配者は、あなたを助けるために、神から遣わされているのです。しかし、何か悪いことをしていれば、支配者はあなたを罰するでしょうから、当然、恐れなければなりません。そのためにこそ、彼は神から遣わされているのです。 5 法に従う理由は二つあります。第一に、罰を受けないためであり、第二に、良心がそれを守るべきだとわかっているからです。 6 同じ理由で、税金も納めなさい。公務につく人々が国民のために、神から与えられた仕事を続けるには、給料が必要だからです。 7 支払うべきものは、だれにでも支払いなさい。納税の義務をすすんで果たし、上に立つ人々に従い、敬うべき人を敬い、重んじるべき人を重んじなさい。
8 借りがあれば、全部返しなさい。ただし、互いに愛し合うことだけは別です。というのは、人を愛することは、神のすべての律法、すべての要求にかなうことだからです。 9 自分を愛するように隣人を愛していれば、その人を傷つけたり、だましたり、殺したり、その人のものを盗んだりしたいとは思わないでしょう。またその人の妻と罪を犯すとか、その人のものを欲しがるといった、「十戒」で禁じられていることは何一つしないでしょう。このように、「姦淫するな、殺すな、盗むな、むさぼるな」という戒めは、「自分を愛するように、あなたの隣人を愛しなさい」という一つの戒めに含まれるのです。 10 愛はだれにも悪を行いません。だからこそ、愛は神の要求をすべて完全に満たすのです。愛こそ、あなたがたに必要なただ一つのおきてです。
11 正しい生活をしなければならない、もう一つの理由があります。それは、今や終末に近づいており、時はどんどん過ぎているからです。目を覚ましなさい。初めに信じたころより、今はいっそう主の来られる時が近いのです。 12-13 夜はふけ、昼がすぐそこまで近づいています。ですから、暗闇に属する悪い行いを捨てて、昼間にふさわしく生きるため、正しい生活という武具で身を固めなさい。あなたがたの行為は正しいとだれからも認められるよう、何をするにも、りっぱに、誠実にふるまいなさい。遊び騒いだり、酔っぱらったり、性的な欲望のとりこになったり、争ったり、ねたんだりして時間を浪費してはなりません。 14 当然なすべき正しい生活ができるように、主イエス・キリストに助けを求めなさい。悪を楽しむような計画を立ててはいけません。

Submission to Governing Authorities
13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities,(A) for there is no authority except that which God has established.(B) The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted,(C) and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.(D) 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.(E) 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.(F)
6 This is also why you pay taxes,(G) for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes;(H) if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
Love Fulfills the Law
8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.(I) 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,”[a](J) and whatever other command there may be, are summed up(K) in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b](L) 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.(M)
The Day Is Near
11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come(N) for you to wake up from your slumber,(O) because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.(P) So let us put aside the deeds of darkness(Q) and put on the armor(R) of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness,(S) not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.(T) 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ,(U) and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.[c](V)
