⁷ I saw among the simple,
    I noticed among the young men,
    a youth who had no sense.^(A)

²¹ Hear this, you foolish and senseless people,^(A)
    who have eyes^(B) but do not see,
    who have ears but do not hear:^(C)

²⁵ So I turned my mind to understand,
    to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things^(A)
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
    and the madness of folly.^(B)

²⁶ I find more bitter than death
    the woman who is a snare,^(C)
whose heart is a trap
    and whose hands are chains.
The man who pleases God will escape her,
    but the sinner she will ensnare.^(D)

²² All at once he followed her
    like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer^[a] stepping into a noose^[b](A)
23     till an arrow pierces^(B) his liver,
like a bird darting into a snare,
    little knowing it will cost him his life.^(C)

¹⁸ Surely her house leads down to death
    and her paths to the spirits of the dead.^(A)
