¹⁴ with perverted mind devising evil,
    continually sowing discord;^(A)

2 Woe to those who devise wickedness
    and evil deeds^[a] on their beds!
When the morning dawns, they perform it,
    because it is in their power.^(A)

¹⁸ a heart that devises wicked plans,
    feet that hurry to run to evil,^(A)
19 a lying witness who testifies falsely,
    and one who sows discord in a family.^(B)

¹⁷ Like someone who takes a passing dog by the ears
    is one who meddles in the quarrel of another.^(A)
18 Like a maniac who shoots deadly firebrands and arrows,^(B)
19 so is one who deceives a neighbor
    and says, “I am only joking!”^(C)
20 For lack of wood the fire goes out,
    and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases.^(D)
21 As charcoal is to hot embers and wood to fire,
    so is a quarrelsome person for kindling strife.^(E)
22 The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels;
    they go down into the inner parts of the body.^(F)

²⁰ But the wicked are like the tossing sea
    that cannot keep still;
    its waters toss up mire and mud.^(A)
