⁵ David said, “My son Solomon is young^(A) and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the Lord should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor^(B) in the sight of all the nations. Therefore I will make preparations for it.” So David made extensive preparations before his death.

¹⁶ Live in harmony with one another.^(A) Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.^[a] Do not be conceited.^(B)

Gifts for Building the Temple

29 Then King David said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced.^(A) The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the Lord God.

Mourning for the One They Pierced

¹⁰ “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit^[a](A) of grace and supplication.^(B) They will look on^[b] me, the one they have pierced,^(C) and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child,^(D) and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.^(E)

Jeremiah’s Prayer

⁵ and these were the children born to him there:

¹³ Go in to King David and say to him, ‘My lord the king, did you not swear^(A) to me your servant: “Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’ ¹⁴ While you are still there talking to the king, I will come in and add my word to what you have said.”

¹⁵ So Bathsheba went to see the aged king in his room, where Abishag^(B) the Shunammite was attending him. ¹⁶ Bathsheba bowed down, prostrating herself before the king.

“What is it you want?” the king asked.

¹⁷ She said to him, “My lord, you yourself swore^(C) to me your servant by the Lord your God: ‘Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne.’

²⁴ Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba,^(A) and he went to her and made love to her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon.^(B) The Lord loved him; ²⁵ and because the Lord loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah.^[a](C)
