²⁴ The accomplices of thieves are their own enemies;
    they are put under oath and dare not testify.^(A)

³⁶ But those who fail to find me harm themselves;^(A)
    all who hate me love death.”^(B)

¹¹ If they say, “Come along with us;
    let’s lie in wait^(A) for innocent blood,
    let’s ambush some harmless soul;
¹² let’s swallow^(B) them alive, like the grave,
    and whole, like those who go down to the pit;^(C)
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things
    and fill our houses with plunder;
¹⁴ cast lots with us;
    we will all share the loot^(D)”—
¹⁵ my son, do not go along with them,
    do not set foot^(E) on their paths;^(F)
16 for their feet rush into evil,^(G)
    they are swift to shed blood.^(H)
17 How useless to spread a net
    where every bird can see it!
¹⁸ These men lie in wait^(I) for their own blood;
    they ambush only themselves!^(J)
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
    it takes away the life of those who get it.^(K)

¹⁸ When you see a thief, you join^(A) with him;
    you throw in your lot with adulterers.^(B)
19 You use your mouth for evil
    and harness your tongue to deceit.^(C)
20 You sit and testify against your brother^(D)
    and slander your own mother’s son.
²¹ When you did these things and I kept silent,^(E)
    you thought I was exactly^[a] like you.
But I now arraign^(F) you
    and set my accusations^(G) before you.

²² “Consider this, you who forget God,^(H)
    or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:^(I)

²³ Your rulers are rebels,^(A)
    partners with thieves;^(B)
they all love bribes^(C)
    and chase after gifts.
They do not defend the cause of the fatherless;
    the widow’s case does not come before them.^(D)

³² Those who disregard discipline despise themselves,^(A)
    but the one who heeds correction gains understanding.^(B)

³² But a man who commits adultery^(A) has no sense;^(B)
    whoever does so destroys himself.
