The Pharisees and Sadducees Seek a Sign(A)

16 Then the (B)Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’; and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ [a]Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. (C)A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of [b]the prophet Jonah.” And He left them and departed.

28 Then they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. 29 We know that God (A)spoke to (B)Moses; as for this fellow, (C)we do not know where He is from.”

30 The man answered and said to them, (D)“Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! 31 Now we know that (E)God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him. 32 Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. 33 (F)If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 But He said to him, (A)“Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” 15 And He said to them, (B)“Take heed and beware of [a]covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, (C)“Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; (D)eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night (E)your soul will be required of you; (F)then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, (G)and is not rich toward God.”

Jesus’ Authority Questioned(A)

23 (B)Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and (C)said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?”

24 But Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things: 25 The (D)baptism of (E)John—where was it from? From heaven or from men?”

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From men,’ we (F)fear the multitude, (G)for all count John as a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus and said, “We do not know.”

And He said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Pharisees: Is It Lawful to Pay Taxes to Caesar?(A)

15 (B)Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk. 16 And they sent to Him their disciples with the (C)Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not [a]regard the person of men. 17 Tell us, therefore, what do You think? 18 But Jesus [b]perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test Me, you hypocrites? 19 Show Me the tax money.”

So they brought Him a denarius.

20 And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”

21 They said to Him, “Caesar’s.”

The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?(G)

23 (H)The same day the Sadducees, (I)who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 24 saying: “Teacher, (J)Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. 27 Last of all the woman died also. 28 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”

29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are [d]mistaken, (K)not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but (L)are like angels [e]of God in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 (M)‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
