⁸ A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it;
    they think success will come at every turn.^(A)

¹⁴ A gift given in secret soothes anger,
    and a bribe concealed in the cloak pacifies great wrath.^(A)

²³ The wicked accept bribes^(A) in secret
    to pervert the course of justice.^(B)

¹² For I know how many are your offenses
    and how great your sins.^(A)

There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes^(B)
    and deprive the poor^(C) of justice in the courts.^(D)

    partners with thieves;^(B)

    and chase after gifts.
They do not defend the cause of the fatherless;
    the widow’s case does not come before them.^(D)
