Solomon's Wealth and Wisdom

²⁰ Judah and Israel were as many ^(A)as the sand by the sea. They ate and drank and were happy. ^{21 [a] (B)}Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the ^(C)Euphrates^[b] to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt. ^(D)They brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.

⁷ For there was not left to Jehoahaz an army of more than fifty horsemen and ten chariots and ten thousand footmen, for the king of Syria had destroyed them and made them like the dust ^(A)at threshing.

²² Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, ^(A)“Every son that is born to the Hebrews^[a] you shall cast into ^(B)the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”

³² In those days the Lord ^(A)began to cut off parts of Israel. ^(B)Hazael defeated them throughout the territory of Israel: ³³ from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from ^(C)Aroer, which is by the Valley of the Arnon, that is, ^(D)Gilead and Bashan.

²⁷ And the people of Israel were mustered and were provisioned and went against them. The people of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, but the Syrians filled the country.

¹² But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel.
