¹⁶ The wise are cautious^[a] and avoid danger;
    fools plunge ahead with reckless confidence.

³ A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions.
    The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.

⁷ Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom.
    Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.

⁹ If a wise person takes a fool to court,
    there will be ranting and ridicule but no satisfaction.

¹⁴ Blessed are those who fear to do wrong,^[a]
    but the stubborn are headed for serious trouble.

¹⁷ The path of the virtuous leads away from evil;
    whoever follows that path is safe.

⁶ Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin.
    By fearing the Lord, people avoid evil.

²¹ “If I raised my hand against an orphan,
    knowing the judges would take my side,
²² then let my shoulder be wrenched out of place!
    Let my arm be torn from its socket!
²³ That would be better than facing God’s judgment.
    For if the majesty of God opposes me, what hope is there?
