¹¹ The Pharisee stood by himself^(A) and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. ¹² I fast^(B) twice a week and give a tenth^(C) of all I get.’

¹³ “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast^(D) and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’^(E)

¹⁴ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”^(F)

⁵ Listen, my dear brothers and sisters:^(A) Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world^(B) to be rich in faith^(C) and to inherit the kingdom^(D) he promised those who love him?^(E)

¹⁰ sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;^(A) poor, yet making many rich;^(B) having nothing,^(C) and yet possessing everything.^(D)

⁷ But we have this treasure in jars of clay^(A) to show that this all-surpassing power is from God^(B) and not from us.

²¹ “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”^(A)
