¹⁷ For the time has come ^(A)for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, ^(B)what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? ¹⁸ Now

²⁹ For behold, ^(A)I begin to bring calamity on the city ^(B)which is called by My name, and should you be utterly unpunished? You shall not be unpunished, for ^(C)I will call for a sword on all the inhabitants of the earth,” says the Lord of hosts.’

³⁰ For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many ^[a]sleep. ³¹ For ^(A)if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. ³² But when we are judged, ^(B)we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

^9 (A)Why have you ^(B)despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in His sight? ^(C)You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the people of Ammon. ¹⁰ Now therefore, ^(D)the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ ¹¹ Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will raise up adversity against you from your own house; and I will ^(E)take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. ¹² For you did it secretly, ^(F)but I will do this thing before all Israel, before the sun.’ ”

^14 (A)I will be his Father, and he shall be ^(B)My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the ^[a]blows of the sons of men. ¹⁵ But My mercy shall not depart from him, ^(C)as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.

²⁴ When he was gone, ^(A)a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his corpse was thrown on the road, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the corpse.
