18 O king, (A)the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your [a]father a kingdom and majesty, glory and honor. 19 And because of the majesty that He gave him, (B)all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whomever he wished, he (C)executed; whomever he wished, he kept alive; whomever he wished, he set up; and whomever he wished, he put down. 20 (D)But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him. 21 Then he was (E)driven from the sons of men, his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. They fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, (F)till he [b]knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses.
22 “But you his son, Belshazzar, (G)have not humbled your heart, although you knew all this. 23 (H)And you have [c]lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. They have brought the (I)vessels of [d]His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, (J)which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand (K)and owns all your ways, you have not glorified. 24 Then the [e]fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.
25 “And this is the inscription that was written:
[f]MENE, MENE, [g]TEKEL, [h]UPHARSIN.
26 This is the interpretation of each word. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; 27 TEKEL: (L)You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; 28 PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the (M)Medes and (N)Persians.”[i] 29 Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him (O)that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

30 (P)That very night Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was slain. 31 (Q)And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.

18 “Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar(A) sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor.(B) 19 Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death;(C) those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled.(D) 20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride,(E) he was deposed from his royal throne(F) and stripped(G) of his glory.(H) 21 He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign(I) over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.(J)
22 “But you, Belshazzar, his son,[a] have not humbled(K) yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself up against(L) the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives(M) and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand.(N) But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life(O) and all your ways.(P) 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.
25 “This is the inscription that was written:
mene, mene, tekel, parsin
26 “Here is what these words mean:
Mene[b]: God has numbered the days(Q) of your reign and brought it to an end.(R)
27 Tekel[c]: You have been weighed on the scales(S) and found wanting.(T)
28 Peres[d]: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes(U) and Persians.”(V)
29 Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck,(W) and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.(X)
30 That very night Belshazzar,(Y) king(Z) of the Babylonians,[e] was slain,(AA) 31 and Darius(AB) the Mede(AC) took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.[f]
