14 ‘But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments,

15 and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant,

16 I also will do this to you:

I will even appoint terror over you, (A)wasting disease and fever which shall (B)consume the eyes and (C)cause sorrow of heart.

And (D)you shall sow your seed [a]in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

17 I will [b]set (E)My face against you, and (F)you shall be defeated by your enemies.

(G)Those who hate you shall reign over you, and you shall (H)flee when no one pursues you.

18 ‘And after all this, if you do not obey Me, then I will punish you (I)seven times more for your sins.

19 I will (J)break the pride of your power;

I (K)will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze.

20 And your (L)strength shall be spent in vain;

for your (M)land shall not yield its produce, nor shall the trees of the land yield their fruit.

21 ‘Then, if you walk contrary to Me, and are not willing to obey Me, I will bring on you seven times more plagues, according to your sins.

22 (N)I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, destroy your livestock, and make you few in number;

and (O)your highways shall be desolate.

23 ‘And if (P)by these things you are not reformed by Me, but walk contrary to Me,

24 (Q)then I also will walk contrary to you, and I will punish you yet seven times for your sins.

25 And (R)I will bring a sword against you that will execute the vengeance of the covenant;

when you are gathered together within your cities (S)I will send pestilence among you;

and you shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.

26 (T)When I have cut off your supply of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall bring back your bread by weight, (U)and you shall eat and not be satisfied.

27 ‘And after all this, if you do not obey Me, but walk contrary to Me,

28 then I also will walk contrary to you in fury;

and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.

29 (V)You[c] shall eat the flesh of your sons, and you shall eat the flesh of your daughters.

30 (W)I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and cast your carcasses on the lifeless forms of your idols;

and My soul shall abhor you.

31 I will lay your (X)cities waste and (Y)bring your sanctuaries to desolation, and I will not (Z)smell the fragrance of your [d]sweet aromas.

32 (AA)I will bring the land to desolation, and your enemies who dwell in it shall be astonished at it.

33 (AB)I will scatter you among the nations and draw out a sword after you;

your land shall be desolate and your cities waste.

34 (AC)Then the land shall enjoy its sabbaths as long as it lies desolate and you are in your enemies’ land;

then the land shall rest and enjoy its sabbaths.

35 As long as it lies desolate it shall rest—

for the time it did not rest on your (AD)sabbaths when you dwelt in it.

36 ‘And as for those of you who are left, I will send (AE)faintness[e] into their hearts in the lands of their enemies;

the sound of a shaken leaf shall cause them to flee;

they shall flee as though fleeing from a sword, and they shall fall when no one pursues.

37 (AF)They shall stumble over one another, as it were before a sword, when no one pursues;

and (AG)you shall have no power to stand before your enemies.

38 You shall (AH)perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.

39 And those of you who are left (AI)shall [f]waste away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands;

also in their (AJ)fathers’ iniquities, which are with them, they shall waste away.

40 But (AK)if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, with their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me,

41 and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies;

if their (AL)uncircumcised hearts are (AM)humbled, and they (AN)accept their guilt—

42 then I will (AO)remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember;

I will (AP)remember the land.

43 (AQ)The land also shall be left empty by them, and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them;

they will accept their guilt, because they (AR)despised My judgments and because their soul abhorred My statutes.

44 Yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, (AS)I will not cast them away, nor shall I abhor them, to utterly destroy them and break My covenant with them;

for I am the Lord their God.

45 But (AT)for their sake I will remember the covenant of their ancestors, (AU)whom I brought out of the land of Egypt (AV)in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God:

I am the Lord.’ ”

Punishment for Disobedience

14 “‘But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands,(A) 15 and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws(B) and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant,(C) 16 then I will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever(D) that will destroy your sight and sap your strength.(E) You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it.(F) 17 I will set my face(G) against you so that you will be defeated(H) by your enemies;(I) those who hate you will rule over you,(J) and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you.(K)

21 “‘If you remain hostile(S) toward me and refuse to listen to me, I will multiply your afflictions seven times over,(T) as your sins deserve. 22 I will send wild animals(U) against you, and they will rob you of your children, destroy your cattle and make you so few(V) in number that your roads will be deserted.(W)

23 “‘If in spite of these things you do not accept my correction(X) but continue to be hostile toward me, 24 I myself will be hostile(Y) toward you and will afflict you for your sins seven times over. 25 And I will bring the sword(Z) on you to avenge(AA) the breaking of the covenant. You will eat, but you will not be satisfied.

27 “‘If in spite of this you still do not listen to me(AD) but continue to be hostile toward me, 28 then in my anger(AE) I will be hostile(AF) toward you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over.(AG) 29 You will eat(AH) the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters.(AI) 30 I will destroy your high places,(AJ) cut down your incense altars(AK) and pile your dead bodies[a] on the lifeless forms of your idols,(AL) and I will abhor(AM) you. 31 I will turn your cities into ruins(AN) and lay waste(AO) your sanctuaries,(AP) and I will take no delight in the pleasing aroma of your offerings.(AQ) 32 I myself will lay waste the land,(AR) so that your enemies who live there will be appalled.(AS) 33 I will scatter(AT) you among the nations(AU) and will draw out my sword(AV) and pursue you. Your land will be laid waste,(AW) and your cities will lie in ruins.(AX) 34 Then the land will enjoy its sabbath years all the time that it lies desolate(AY) and you are in the country of your enemies;(AZ) then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. 35 All the time that it lies desolate, the land will have the rest(BA) it did not have during the sabbaths you lived in it.

36 “‘As for those of you who are left, I will make their hearts so fearful in the lands of their enemies that the sound of a windblown leaf(BB) will put them to flight.(BC) They will run as though fleeing from the sword, and they will fall, even though no one is pursuing them.(BD) 37 They will stumble over one another(BE) as though fleeing from the sword, even though no one is pursuing them. So you will not be able to stand before your enemies.(BF) 38 You will perish(BG) among the nations; the land of your enemies will devour you.(BH) 39 Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors’(BI) sins they will waste away.(BJ)

40 “‘But if they will confess(BK) their sins(BL) and the sins of their ancestors(BM)—their unfaithfulness and their hostility toward me, 41 which made me hostile(BN) toward them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies—then when their uncircumcised hearts(BO) are humbled(BP) and they pay(BQ) for their sin, 42 I will remember my covenant with Jacob(BR) and my covenant with Isaac(BS) and my covenant with Abraham,(BT) and I will remember the land. 43 For the land will be deserted(BU) by them and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will pay for their sins because they rejected(BV) my laws and abhorred my decrees.(BW) 44 Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies,(BX) I will not reject them or abhor(BY) them so as to destroy them completely,(BZ) breaking my covenant(CA) with them. And all these blessings shall come upon you and (A)overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:

(B)“Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be (C)in the country.

“The Lord (F)will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.

“The Lord will (G)command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you (H)set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

(I)“The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways. 10 Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are (J)called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be (K)afraid of you. 11 And (L)the Lord will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the Lord [b]swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The Lord will open to you His good [c]treasure, the heavens, (M)to give the rain to your land in its season, and (N)to bless all the work of your hand. (O)You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. 13 And the Lord will make (P)you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you [d]heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them. 14 (Q)So you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right or the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

Curses on Disobedience(R)

15 “But it shall come to pass, (S)if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:

16 “Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country.

17 “Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

18 “Cursed shall be the [e]fruit of your body and the produce of your land, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.

19 “Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.

20 “The Lord will send on you (T)cursing, (U)confusion, and (V)rebuke in all that you set your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the wickedness of your doings in which you have forsaken Me. 21 The Lord will make the [f]plague cling to you until He has consumed you from the land which you are going to possess. 22 (W)The Lord will strike you with consumption, with fever, with inflammation, with severe burning fever, with the sword, with (X)scorching,[g] and with mildew; they shall pursue you until you perish. 23 And (Y)your heavens which are over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you shall be iron. 24 The Lord will change the rain of your land to powder and dust; from the heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed.

25 (Z)“The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies; you shall go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them; and you shall become [h]troublesome to all the kingdoms of the earth. 26 (AA)Your carcasses shall be food for all the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and no one shall frighten them away. 27 The Lord will strike you with (AB)the boils of Egypt, with (AC)tumors, with the scab, and with the itch, from which you cannot be healed. 28 The Lord will strike you with madness and blindness and (AD)confusion of heart. 29 And you shall (AE)grope at noonday, as a blind man gropes in darkness; you shall not prosper in your ways; you shall be only oppressed and plundered continually, and no one shall save you.

30 (AF)“You shall betroth a wife, but another man shall lie with her; (AG)you shall build a house, but you shall not dwell in it; (AH)you shall plant a vineyard, but shall not gather its grapes. 31 Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, but you shall not eat of it; your donkey shall be violently taken away from before you, and shall not be restored to you; your sheep shall be given to your enemies, and you shall have no one to rescue them. 32 Your sons and your daughters shall be given to (AI)another people, and your eyes shall look and (AJ)fail with longing for them all day long; and there shall be [i]no strength in your (AK)hand. 33 A nation whom you have not known shall eat (AL)the fruit of your land and the produce of your labor, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually. 34 So you shall be driven mad because of the sight which your eyes see. 35 The Lord will strike you in the knees and on the legs with severe boils which cannot be healed, and from the sole of your foot to the top of your head.

36 “The Lord will (AM)bring you and the king whom you set over you to a nation which neither you nor your fathers have known, and (AN)there you shall serve other gods—wood and stone. 37 And you shall become (AO)an[j] astonishment, a proverb, (AP)and a byword among all nations where the Lord will drive you.

38 (AQ)“You shall carry much seed out to the field but gather little in, for (AR)the locust shall [k]consume it. 39 You shall plant vineyards and tend them, but you shall neither drink of the (AS)wine nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them. 40 You shall have olive trees throughout all your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself with the oil; for your olives shall drop off. 41 You shall beget sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours; for (AT)they shall go into captivity. 42 Locusts shall [l]consume all your trees and the produce of your land.

43 “The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.

45 “Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you [m]did not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. 46 And they shall be upon (AU)you for a sign and a wonder, and on your descendants forever.

47 (AV)“Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and gladness of heart, (AW)for the abundance of everything, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the Lord will send against you, in (AX)hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He (AY)will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you. 49 (AZ)The Lord will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, (BA)as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance, (BB)which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. 51 And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you.

52 “They shall (BC)besiege you at all your gates until your high and fortified walls, in which you trust, come down throughout all your land; and they shall besiege you at all your gates throughout all your land which the Lord your God has given you. 53 (BD)You shall eat the [n]fruit of your own body, the flesh of your sons and your daughters whom the Lord your God has given you, in the siege and desperate straits in which your enemy shall distress you. 54 The [o]sensitive and very refined man among you (BE)will[p] be hostile toward his brother, toward (BF)the wife of his bosom, and toward the rest of his children whom he leaves behind, 55 so that he will not give any of them the flesh of his children whom he will eat, because he has nothing left in the siege and desperate straits in which your enemy shall distress you at all your gates. 56 The [q]tender and [r]delicate woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because of her delicateness and sensitivity, [s]will refuse to the husband of her bosom, and to her son and her daughter, 57 her [t]placenta which comes out (BG)from between her feet and her children whom she bears; for she will eat them secretly for lack of everything in the siege and desperate straits in which your enemy shall distress you at all your gates.

58 “If you do not carefully observe all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear (BH)this glorious and awesome name, THE LORD YOUR GOD, 59 then the Lord will bring upon you and your descendants (BI)extraordinary plagues—great and prolonged plagues—and serious and prolonged sicknesses. 60 Moreover He will bring back on you all (BJ)the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you. 61 Also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in this Book of the Law, will the Lord bring upon you until you are destroyed. 62 You (BK)shall be left few in number, whereas you were (BL)as the stars of heaven in multitude, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God. 63 And it shall be, that just as the Lord (BM)rejoiced over you to do you good and multiply you, so the Lord (BN)will rejoice over you to destroy you and bring you to nothing; and you shall be (BO)plucked[u] from off the land which you go to possess.

64 “Then the Lord (BP)will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and (BQ)there you shall serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known—wood and stone. 65 And (BR)among those nations you shall find no rest, nor shall the sole of your foot have a resting place; (BS)but there the Lord will give you a [v]trembling heart, failing eyes, and (BT)anguish of soul. 66 Your life shall hang in doubt before you; you shall fear day and night, and have no assurance of life. 67 (BU)In the morning you shall say, ‘Oh, that it were evening!’ And at evening you shall say, ‘Oh, that it were morning!’ because of the fear which terrifies your heart, and (BV)because of the sight which your eyes see.

68 “And the Lord (BW)will take you back to Egypt in ships, by the way of which I said to you, (BX)‘You shall never see it again.’ And there you shall be offered for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.

You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven,(AP) and you will become a thing of horror(AQ) to all the kingdoms on earth.(AR) 26 Your carcasses will be food for all the birds(AS) and the wild animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away.(AT) 27 The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt(AU) and with tumors, festering sores and the itch, from which you cannot be cured. 28 The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind. 29 At midday you will grope(AV) about like a blind person in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day you will be oppressed and robbed, with no one to rescue(AW) you.

30 You will be pledged to be married to a woman, but another will take her and rape her.(AX) You will build a house, but you will not live in it.(AY) You will plant a vineyard, but you will not even begin to enjoy its fruit.(AZ) 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will eat none of it. Your donkey will be forcibly taken from you and will not be returned. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and no one will rescue them. 32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation,(BA) and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand. 33 A people that you do not know will eat what your land and labor produce, and you will have nothing but cruel oppression(BB) all your days.(BC) 34 The sights you see will drive you mad.(BD) 35 The Lord will afflict your knees and legs with painful boils(BE) that cannot be cured, spreading from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.(BF)

36 The Lord will drive you and the king(BG) you set over you to a nation unknown to you or your ancestors.(BH) There you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone.(BI) 37 You will become a thing of horror,(BJ) a byword(BK) and an object of ridicule(BL) among all the peoples where the Lord will drive you.(BM)

38 You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little,(BN) because locusts(BO) will devour(BP) it. 39 You will plant vineyards and cultivate them but you will not drink the wine(BQ) or gather the grapes, because worms will eat(BR) them.(BS) 40 You will have olive trees throughout your country but you will not use the oil, because the olives will drop off.(BT) 41 You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity.(BU) 42 Swarms of locusts(BV) will take over all your trees and the crops of your land.

43 The foreigners who reside among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower.(BW) 44 They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them.(BX) They will be the head, but you will be the tail.(BY)

45 All these curses will come on you. They will pursue you and overtake you(BZ) until you are destroyed,(CA) because you did not obey the Lord your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. 46 They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever.(CB) 47 Because you did not serve(CC) the Lord your God joyfully and gladly(CD) in the time of prosperity, 48 therefore in hunger and thirst,(CE) in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke(CF) on your neck(CG) until he has destroyed you.

49 The Lord will bring a nation against you(CH) from far away, from the ends of the earth,(CI) like an eagle(CJ) swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand,(CK) 50 a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old(CL) or pity for the young. 51 They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine(CM) or olive oil,(CN) nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined.(CO) 52 They will lay siege(CP) to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the Lord your God is giving you.(CQ)

53 Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you.(CR) 54 Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, 55 and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities.(CS) 56 The most gentle and sensitive(CT) woman among you—so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot—will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter(CU) 57 the afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For in her dire need she intends to eat them(CV) secretly because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of your cities.

58 If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law,(CW) which are written in this book, and do not revere(CX) this glorious and awesome name(CY)—the Lord your God— 59 the Lord will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. 60 He will bring on you all the diseases of Egypt(CZ) that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. 61 The Lord will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law,(DA) until you are destroyed.(DB) 62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky(DC) will be left but few(DD) in number, because you did not obey the Lord your God. 63 Just as it pleased(DE) the Lord to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please(DF) him to ruin and destroy you.(DG) You will be uprooted(DH) from the land you are entering to possess.

64 Then the Lord will scatter(DI) you among all nations,(DJ) from one end of the earth to the other.(DK) There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known.(DL) 65 Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place(DM) for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes(DN) weary with longing, and a despairing heart.(DO) 66 You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. 67 In the morning you will say, “If only it were evening!” and in the evening, “If only it were morning!”—because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see.(DP) 68 The Lord will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again.(DQ) There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.
