English Standard Version
6 For at (C)the window of my house
I have looked out through my lattice,
7 and I have seen among (D)the simple,
I have perceived among the youths,
a young man (E)lacking sense,
8 passing along the street (F)near her corner,
taking the road to her house
9 in (G)the twilight, in the evening,
at (H)the time of night and darkness.
10 And behold, the woman meets him,
(I)dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.[c]
11 She is (J)loud and (K)wayward;
(L)her feet do not stay at home;
12 now in the street, now in the market,
and (M)at every corner she (N)lies in wait.
13 She seizes him and kisses him,
and with (O)bold face she says to him,
14 “I had to (P)offer sacrifices,[d]
and today I have (Q)paid my vows;
15 so now I have come out to meet you,
to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.
16 I have spread my couch with (R)coverings,
colored linens from (S)Egyptian linen;
17 I have perfumed my bed with (T)myrrh,
aloes, and (U)cinnamon.
18 Come, let us take our fill of love till morning;
let us delight ourselves with love.
19 For (V)my husband is not at home;
he has gone on a long journey;
20 he took a bag of money with him;
at full moon he will come home.”
21 With much seductive speech she persuades him;
with (W)her smooth talk she compels him.
22 All at once he follows her,
as an ox goes to the slaughter,
or as a stag is caught fast[e]
23 till an arrow pierces its liver;
as (X)a bird rushes into a snare;
he does not know that it will cost him his life.

5 They will keep you from the adulterous woman,
from the wayward woman with her seductive words.(A)
6 At the window of my house
I looked down through the lattice.
7 I saw among the simple,
I noticed among the young men,
a youth who had no sense.(B)
8 He was going down the street near her corner,
walking along in the direction of her house
9 at twilight,(C) as the day was fading,
as the dark of night set in.
10 Then out came a woman to meet him,
dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
11 (She is unruly(D) and defiant,
her feet never stay at home;
12 now in the street, now in the squares,
at every corner she lurks.)(E)
13 She took hold of him(F) and kissed him
and with a brazen face she said:(G)
14 “Today I fulfilled my vows,
and I have food from my fellowship offering(H) at home.
15 So I came out to meet you;
I looked for you and have found you!
16 I have covered my bed
with colored linens from Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed(I)
with myrrh,(J) aloes and cinnamon.
18 Come, let’s drink deeply of love till morning;
let’s enjoy ourselves with love!(K)
19 My husband is not at home;
he has gone on a long journey.
20 He took his purse filled with money
and will not be home till full moon.”
21 With persuasive words she led him astray;
she seduced him with her smooth talk.(L)
22 All at once he followed her
like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer[a] stepping into a noose[b](M)
23 till an arrow pierces(N) his liver,
like a bird darting into a snare,
little knowing it will cost him his life.(O)

26 Was it not because of marriages like these that Solomon king of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him.(A) He was loved by his God,(B) and God made him king over all Israel, but even he was led into sin by foreign women.(C) 27 Must we hear now that you too are doing all this terrible wickedness and are being unfaithful to our God by marrying(D) foreign women?”
Genesis 39:3-12
English Standard Version
3 His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord (A)caused all that he did to succeed in his hands. 4 So Joseph (B)found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house (C)and put him in charge of all that he had. 5 From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house (D)for Joseph's sake; the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had, in house and field. 6 So he left all that he had in Joseph's charge, and because of him he had no concern about anything but the food he ate.
Now Joseph was (E)handsome in form and appearance. 7 And after a time his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” 8 But he refused and said to his master's wife, “Behold, because of me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and (F)he has put everything that he has in my charge. 9 He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and (G)sin against God?” 10 And as she spoke to Joseph day after day, he (H)would not listen to her, to lie beside her or to be with her.
11 But one day, when he went into the house to do his work and none of the men of the house was there in the house, 12 (I)she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house.

3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him(A) and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,(B) 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes(C) and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household,(D) and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.(E) 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household(F) of the Egyptian because of Joseph.(G) The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.(H) 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care;(I) with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,(J) 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”(K)
8 But he refused.(L) “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.(M) 9 No one is greater in this house than I am.(N) My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”(O) 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused(P) to go to bed with her or even be with her.
11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties,(Q) and none of the household servants(R) was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak(S) and said, “Come to bed with me!”(T) But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.(U)

English Standard Version
3 For the lips of (A)a forbidden[a] woman drip honey,
and her speech[b] is (B)smoother than oil,
4 but in the end she is (C)bitter as (D)wormwood,
(E)sharp as (F)a two-edged sword.
5 Her feet (G)go down to death;
her steps follow the path to[c] Sheol;
6 she (H)does not ponder the path of life;
her ways wander, and she does not know it.
7 And (I)now, O sons, listen to me,
and do not depart from the words of my mouth.
8 Keep your way far from her,
and do not go near the door of her house,
9 lest you give your honor to others
and your years to the merciless,
10 lest strangers take their fill of your strength,
and your (J)labors go to the house of a foreigner,
11 and at the end of your life you (K)groan,
when your flesh and body are consumed,
12 and you say, (L)“How I hated discipline,
and my heart (M)despised reproof!
13 I did not listen to the voice of my teachers
or incline my ear to my instructors.
14 (N)I am at the brink of utter ruin
in the assembled congregation.”
15 Drink (O)water from your own cistern,
flowing water from your own well.
16 Should your (P)springs be scattered abroad,
streams of water (Q)in the streets?
17 (R)Let them be for yourself alone,
and not for strangers with you.
18 Let your (S)fountain be blessed,
and (T)rejoice in (U)the wife of your youth,
19 a lovely (V)deer, a graceful doe.
Let her breasts (W)fill you at all times with delight;
be intoxicated[d] always in her love.
20 Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with (X)a forbidden woman
and embrace the bosom of (Y)an adulteress?[e]

3 For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey,
and her speech is smoother than oil;(A)
4 but in the end she is bitter as gall,(B)
sharp as a double-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death;
her steps lead straight to the grave.(C)
6 She gives no thought to the way of life;
her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it.(D)
7 Now then, my sons, listen(E) to me;
do not turn aside from what I say.
8 Keep to a path far from her,(F)
do not go near the door of her house,
9 lest you lose your honor to others
and your dignity[a] to one who is cruel,
10 lest strangers feast on your wealth
and your toil enrich the house of another.(G)
11 At the end of your life you will groan,
when your flesh and body are spent.
12 You will say, “How I hated discipline!
How my heart spurned correction!(H)
13 I would not obey my teachers
or turn my ear to my instructors.
14 And I was soon in serious trouble(I)
in the assembly of God’s people.”(J)
15 Drink water from your own cistern,

17 Let them be yours alone,

18 May your fountain(K) be blessed,
and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.(L)
19 A loving doe, a graceful deer(M)—
may her breasts satisfy you always,
may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
20 Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife?
Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?
