Echte wijsheid
7 Als goede mensen goede dingen over je zeggen, is dat beter dan dat je er goed uitziet.
En de dag dat je sterft, is beter dan de dag dat je werd geboren.
2 Het is beter om naar een begrafenis te gaan, dan naar een feest. Want de dood is het einde van ieder mens. Dat moeten we niet vergeten.
3 Verdriet is beter dan plezier, want als je laat merken dat je verdrietig bent, helpt dat je om er overheen te komen.
4 Wijze mensen denken na over de dood. Maar dwaze mensen denken alleen maar aan plezier maken.
5 Het is beter om te luisteren naar een waarschuwing van wijze mensen, dan naar het vrolijke zingen van dwazen. 6 Want het lachen van een dwaas is net zo snel voorbij als het geknetter van brandende dorens onder een pan. Het is maar lucht.
7 Luister goed: door afpersing wordt een wijs man dwaas, en door omkoping wordt een goed mens slecht.
8 Het einde van iets is beter dan het begin ervan.
Het is beter om geduldig te zijn dan trots.
9 Erger je niet te snel ergens aan, want ergernis woont in het hart van de dwazen.
10 Vraag niet: "Hoe komt het dat het vroeger beter was dan nu?" Want dat is geen wijze vraag.
11 Wijsheid is net zo belangrijk als een erfenis. Het is iets goeds voor de mensen die onder de zon leven. 12 Want wijsheid beschermt, net zoals geld beschermt. Maar wijsheid is nog beter dan geld, want door wijsheid weet een wijs mens hoe hij leven moet.
13 Kijk naar wat God doet. Wie kan recht maken wat Hij heeft gebogen?
14 Geniet wanneer het goed met je gaat. Maar bedenk in moeilijke tijden: "Ook deze dagen heeft God gemaakt, net zoals die andere dagen." Een mens heeft geen idee van wat er in de toekomst gebeuren zal.
15 Ik heb van alles gezien in de korte tijd dat ik leef op aarde. Bijvoorbeeld: een goed en eerlijk mens met wie het toch slecht afloopt. En een slecht mens die toch lang leeft. 16 Wees niet al te goed en eerlijk. Wees niet al te wijs. Je zou jezelf er alleen maar kwaad mee doen. 17 Maar wees ook niet al te slecht en wees geen dwaas. Want waarom zou je sterven vóór het je tijd is? 18 Probeer het midden te vinden tussen wijs en dwaas. Als je ontzag hebt voor God, zul je het juiste midden weten te vinden.
19 Eén wijs mens is door zijn wijsheid machtiger dan tien bestuurders van een stad.
20 Niemand op aarde leeft zó goed, dat hij nooit iets verkeerds doet. 21 Luister daarom niet naar alles wat er gezegd wordt. Want anders hoor je nog dat je knecht je vervloekt. 22 Want van binnen weet je wel dat je zelf ook vaak andere mensen vervloekt hebt.
Predikers zoektocht naar wijsheid
23 Ik heb dit allemaal onderzocht omdat ik wijs wilde worden. Maar het is me niet gelukt: de wijsheid bleef onbereikbaar. 24 Hoe kún je bereiken wat zo ver weg is en zo diep verstopt zit? Het leven is niet te begrijpen. 25 Ik bestudeerde alles, omdat het mijn diepste wens was om meer te weten en te begrijpen. Ik wilde bewijzen dat het dwaas is om je niets van God aan te trekken. Dat het dwaas is om onverstandig te zijn. 26 En ik ontdekte iets wat nog erger is dan de dood: een ontrouwe vrouw. Haar hart is een valkuil en haar handen zijn boeien. Iemand die van God houdt, kan aan haar ontsnappen. Maar iemand die niet om God geeft, wordt door haar gevangen.
27 Dit is wat ik ontdekt heb – ik heb over de dingen nagedacht, omdat ik tot een goede conclusie wilde komen. 28 Maar ik heb die conclusie nog niet gevonden. Ik ben er nog steeds naar op zoek. Onder duizend mensen heb ik maar één goede man gevonden. Maar geen enkele goede vrouw. 29 Maar wat ik wél heb ontdekt, is dat God de mensen wel goed gemaakt heeft, maar dat ze zelf allerlei slechte dingen bedenken.

Wijsheid gaat boven rijkdom
7 Een goede reputatie is beter dan het duurste parfum. De dag waarop iemand sterft, is beter dan de dag van zijn geboorte. 2 Het is beter uw tijd te besteden aan begrafenissen dan aan feesten. Want ook u zult eens sterven en het is goed daaraan te denken nu u er nog de tijd voor hebt. 3 Verdriet is beter dan blijdschap, want verdriet is beter voor je ziel. 4 Een wijs mens denkt vaak aan de dood, terwijl een dwaas zich alleen maar zorgen maakt over de vraag hoe hij dit moment het prettigste kan doorbrengen. 5 Het is beter kritiek te krijgen van een wijs man dan lof te ontvangen van een dwaas. 6 Want het compliment van een dwaas is net zo snel verdwenen als een stuk papier in het vuur en het is dom daarvan onder de indruk te raken. 7 De wijze man wordt een dwaas als hij zich laat omkopen, het ondermijnt zijn inzicht.
8 Iets afmaken is beter dan met iets beginnen. Geduld is beter dan trots. 9 Erger je niet, want ergernis is iets voor dwazen. 10 Vraag niet waarom het vroeger beter was dan nu, zoʼn vraag getuigt niet van wijsheid. 11 Wijsheid en bezit zijn goede zaken in het leven. 12 Zowel met wijsheid als met geld kunt u veel bereiken, maar wijsheid stelt u in staat in leven te blijven. 13 Kijk eens hoe God te werk gaat en probeer niet zijn werk te veranderen: niemand kan recht maken wat Hij gebogen heeft. 14 Geniet van de voorspoed zoveel u kunt en als er moeilijker tijden aanbreken, bedenk dan dat God zowel het een als het ander geeft. Wij weten niet hoe de toekomst zal zijn.
15 In dit zinloze leven heb ik alles gezien wat er te zien valt, ook het feit dat goede mensen jong sterven en sommige slechte mensen heel oud worden. 16 Wees daarom niet al te goed en niet al te wijs. Waarom zou u zichzelf vernietigen? 17 Aan de andere kant moet u ook niet al te slecht zijn, wees geen dwaas. Waarom zou u sterven voor het uw tijd is? 18 Voor wie ontzag voor God heeft, is het het beste de middenweg te kiezen tussen verstandig en dwaas zijn. 19 Een wijs man is sterker dan de bestuurders van tien grote steden. 20 Nergens op aarde is een mens te vinden die altijd het goede doet en nooit zondigt. 21 Luister geen gesprekken af. U zou wel eens kunnen horen dat uw dienaar u verwenst. 22 U weet toch hoe vaak u zelf anderen verwenst!
23 Ik heb mijn best gedaan wijs te zijn. Ik verklaarde: ‘Ik zál wijs zijn,’ maar het hielp niet. 24 Wijsheid ligt te ver weg en is moeilijk te vinden. 25 Ik zocht overal, vastbesloten de wijsheid en de reden voor alle gebeurtenissen te vinden en mijzelf te bewijzen dat zonde dwaasheid is en dat dwaasheid gelijk staat aan waanzin. 26 Ik ontdekte iets dat bitterder is dan de dood: een vrouw die tot ontucht wil verleiden, zij is een valstrik en een vangnet. Wie met God leeft, ontsnapt daaraan, maar zondaars raken in haar web verstrikt.
27 Dit is mijn conclusie, zegt de Prediker, stap voor stap bereikte ik dit resultaat, na in elke richting te hebben gezocht: 28 één op de duizend mensen met wie ik sprak, kan als wijs worden beschouwd. Onder hen bevond zich echter geen enkele vrouw. 29 En ik kwam erachter dat God de mens eenvoudig heeft gemaakt en dat de mens zelf allerlei ingewikkelde dingen bedenkt.

7 A good name is better than fine perfume,(A)
and the day of death better than the day of birth.(B)
2 It is better to go to a house of mourning
than to go to a house of feasting,
for death(C) is the destiny(D) of everyone;
the living should take this to heart.
3 Frustration is better than laughter,(E)
because a sad face is good for the heart.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.(F)
5 It is better to heed the rebuke(G) of a wise person
than to listen to the song of fools.
6 Like the crackling of thorns(H) under the pot,
so is the laughter(I) of fools.
This too is meaningless.
7 Extortion turns a wise person into a fool,
and a bribe(J) corrupts the heart.
8 The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
and patience(K) is better than pride.
9 Do not be quickly provoked(L) in your spirit,
for anger resides in the lap of fools.(M)
10 Do not say, “Why were the old days(N) better than these?”
For it is not wise to ask such questions.
11 Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing(O)
and benefits those who see the sun.(P)
12 Wisdom is a shelter
as money is a shelter,
but the advantage of knowledge is this:
Wisdom preserves those who have it.
13 Consider what God has done:(Q)
Who can straighten
what he has made crooked?(R)
14 When times are good, be happy;
but when times are bad, consider this:
God has made the one
as well as the other.(S)
Therefore, no one can discover
anything about their future.
15 In this meaningless life(T) of mine I have seen both of these:
the righteous perishing in their righteousness,
and the wicked living long in their wickedness.(U)
16 Do not be overrighteous,
neither be overwise—
why destroy yourself?
17 Do not be overwicked,
and do not be a fool—
why die before your time?(V)
18 It is good to grasp the one
and not let go of the other.
Whoever fears God(W) will avoid all extremes.[a]
20 Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous,(Z)
no one who does what is right and never sins.(AA)
21 Do not pay attention to every word people say,
or you(AB) may hear your servant cursing you—
22 for you know in your heart
that many times you yourself have cursed others.
23 All this I tested by wisdom and I said,
“I am determined to be wise”(AC)—
but this was beyond me.
24 Whatever exists is far off and most profound—
who can discover it?(AD)
25 So I turned my mind to understand,
to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things(AE)
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
and the madness of folly.(AF)
26 I find more bitter than death
the woman who is a snare,(AG)
whose heart is a trap
and whose hands are chains.
The man who pleases God will escape her,
but the sinner she will ensnare.(AH)
27 “Look,” says the Teacher,[b](AI) “this is what I have discovered:
“Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things—
28 while I was still searching
but not finding—
I found one upright man among a thousand,
but not one upright woman(AJ) among them all.
29 This only have I found:
God created mankind upright,
but they have gone in search of many schemes.”

15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
16 Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself ?
17 Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
19 Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.
20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
21 Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
22 For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
23 All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
24 That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:
26 And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
27 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:
28 Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
