Människans lott
9 Allt detta har jag begrundat och kommit fram till: De rättfärdiga och visa och deras gärningar är i Guds hand. Om en människa har kärlek eller hat framför sig vet hon inte. 2 Samma öde drabbar alla, den rättfärdige och den gudlöse, den gode och rene och den orene, den som offrar och den som inte gör det.
Det går den gode
som det går syndaren,
likaså den som svär en ed
och den som är rädd för att svära.
3 Det finns ett ont i allt som sker under solen: alla har samma öde. Människornas hjärtan är fulla av ondska, och dårskap bor inom dem livet igenom, och sedan förenar de sig med de döda. 4 Så länge någon lever finns det hopp. Även en levande hund är bättre än ett dött lejon.
5 De levande vet att de kommer att dö,
men de döda vet ingenting.
De har ingen belöning att vänta,
och man ska inte ens komma ihåg dem.
6 Deras kärlek, hat och avund är över,
och de ska aldrig mer befatta sig med det som händer under solen.
7 Så ät ditt bröd med glädje, och drick ditt vin med glatt hjärta, för detta uppskattar Gud. 8 Klä dig alltid i vita kläder, och låt inte olja fattas på ditt huvud. 9 Lev lycklig tillsammans med den kvinna du älskar, alla dagar i ditt meningslösa liv, som Gud har gett dig under solen, i alla dina meningslösa dagar. För detta är din lott i livet och i din möda under solen. 10 Vad du än gör så gör det med all din kraft, för i dödsriket, dit du går, finns inget arbete, inga planer, ingen kunskap och ingen visdom.
11 Vidare såg jag under solen:
Det är inte de snabba som vinner loppet
eller den starkaste som segrar i striden,
inte heller de visa som har bröd,
inte de kloka som blir rika
och inte de lärda som lyckas.
Nej, alla är de beroende av rätt tid och tillfälle.
12 En människa har inte heller kunskap om sin tid.
Likt fiskar som fångas i ett nät,
eller som fåglar som fastnar i en snara,
så snärjs människorna i onda tider
som plötsligt kommer över dem.
Vishet och dårskap
13 Också ett annat exempel på stor visdom såg jag under solen, och den gjorde starkt intryck på mig: 14 Det fanns en liten stad med få invånare, och dit kom en mäktig kung med sin armé och belägrade den med stora befästningar. 15 I staden fanns det en vis men fattig man, och han räddade staden med sin vishet. Men sedan var det ingen som kom ihåg honom. 16 Då sa jag: ”Vishet är bättre än styrka.” Men den fattiges vishet blir föraktad, och ingen fäster sig vid vad han säger.
17 Den vises ord i stillhet är starkare
än ropen från den som för dårarnas talan.
18 Vishet är bättre än vapen,
men en syndare fördärvar mycket gott.

Death Comes to All
9 But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, (A)how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are (B)in the hand of God. Whether it is love or hate, man does not know; both are before him. 2 (C)It is the same for all, since (D)the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil,[a] to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As the good one is, so is the sinner, and he who (E)swears is as he who shuns an oath. 3 This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that (F)the same event happens to all. Also, the hearts of the children of man are full of evil, and (G)madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead. 4 But he who is joined with all the living has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion. 5 For the living know that they will die, but (H)the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for (I)the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun.
Enjoy Life with the One You Love
7 Go, (J)eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do.
8 (K)Let your garments be always white. Let not (L)oil be lacking on your head.
9 Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your (M)vain[b] life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your (N)portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, (O)do it with your might,[c] (P)for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.
Wisdom Better Than Folly
11 (Q)Again I saw that under the sun (R)the race is not to the swift, nor (S)the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and (T)chance (U)happen to them all. 12 For man (V)does not know his time. Like fish that are taken in an evil net, and (W)like birds that are caught in a snare, so the children of man are (X)snared at an evil time, when it suddenly falls upon them.
13 I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me. 14 There was a little city with few men in it, and a great king came against it and besieged it, building great siegeworks against it. 15 But there was found in it (Y)a poor, wise man, and he by his (Z)wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that poor man. 16 But I say that (AA)wisdom is better than might, though (AB)the poor man's wisdom is despised and his words are not heard.
17 The words of the wise heard in (AC)quiet are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools. 18 (AD)Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but (AE)one sinner destroys much good.

12 原 来 人 也 不 知 道 自 己 的 定 期 。 鱼 被 恶 网 圈 住 ， 鸟 被 网 罗 捉 住 ， 祸 患 忽 然 临 到 的 时 候 ， 世 人 陷 在 其 中 也 是 如 此 。
13 我 见 日 光 之 下 有 一 样 智 慧 ， 据 我 看 乃 是 广 大 ，
14 就 是 有 一 小 城 ， 其 中 的 人 数 稀 少 ， 有 大 君 王 来 攻 击 ， 修 筑 营 垒 ， 将 城 围 困 。
15 城 中 有 一 个 贫 穷 的 智 慧 人 ， 他 用 智 慧 救 了 那 城 ， 却 没 有 人 记 念 那 穷 人 。
16 我 就 说 ， 智 慧 胜 过 勇 力 ； 然 而 那 贫 穷 人 的 智 慧 被 人 藐 视 ， 他 的 话 也 无 人 听 从 。
17 宁 可 在 安 静 之 中 听 智 慧 人 的 言 语 ， 不 听 掌 管 愚 昧 人 的 喊 声 。
18 智 慧 胜 过 打 仗 的 兵 器 ； 但 一 个 罪 人 能 败 坏 许 多 善 事 。
