10 Döda flugor får
parfymerarens olja
att stinka och jäsa.
Så uppväger liten dårskap
både vishet och ära.
2 Den vise har sitt hjärta åt höger[a],
men dåren har sitt hjärta åt vänster.
3 (A) På alla sina vägar är dåren utan vett,
och han säger till alla
att han är en dåre.
4 (B) Om en furste blir vred på dig,
så lämna inte din plats,
för saktmod förhindrar stora synder.
5 Det finns ett ont
som jag har sett under solen,
ett misstag som kommer
från den som har makten:
6 (C) Att dårskap sätts på höga poster
och framstående män
på obetydlig plats.
7 Jag har sett slavar till häst
och furstar till fots som slavar.
8 (D) Den som gräver en grop
faller själv däri,
och den som river en mur
blir biten av en orm.
9 Den som flyttar på sten
blir skadad av sten,
och den som klyver ved
blir skadad av trä.
10 Den som inte slipar eggen
när järnet blir slött
måste använda mer kraft.
Men vishet leder till framgång.
11 (E) Om ormen hugger
innan den blivit tjusad
har ormtjusaren ingen nytta
av sin konst.
12 (F) Ord från den vises mun
är välgörande[b],
men dåren förtärs
av sina egna läppar.
13 Början på hans tal är dårskap
och slutet svår galenskap.
14 (G) Dåren är rik på ord,
men ingen människa
vet vad som ska ske.
Vem kan säga en människa
vad som kommer efter henne?
15 Dårarnas möda tröttar ut dem.
Inte ens till staden hittar de vägen.
16 (H) Ve dig, du land
vars kung är ett barn[c]
och där furstarna festar
redan på morgonen!
17 Lyckliga land
vars kung är son till ädla män
och där furstarna har fest
vid rätt tid,
för att få styrka[d]
och inte för att dricka.
18 Av lättja förfaller husets bjälkar,
och av försumlighet
regnar det in genom taket.
19 (I) Fest ordnar man för att roa sig
och vin ger glädje åt livet,
och pengar kan ge allt detta.
20 (J) Inte ens i din tanke
ska du förbanna en kung,
och inte ens i ditt sovrum
ska du förbanna den rike,
för himlens fåglar bär ditt tal
och de bevingade för vidare
vad du har sagt.

10 As dead flies give perfume a bad smell,
so a little folly(A) outweighs wisdom and honor.
2 The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
but the heart of the fool to the left.
3 Even as fools walk along the road,
they lack sense
and show everyone(B) how stupid they are.
4 If a ruler’s anger rises against you,
do not leave your post;(C)
calmness can lay great offenses to rest.(D)
5 There is an evil I have seen under the sun,
the sort of error that arises from a ruler:
6 Fools are put in many high positions,(E)
while the rich occupy the low ones.
7 I have seen slaves on horseback,
while princes go on foot like slaves.(F)
8 Whoever digs a pit may fall into it;(G)
whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.(H)
9 Whoever quarries stones may be injured by them;
whoever splits logs may be endangered by them.(I)
10 If the ax is dull
and its edge unsharpened,
more strength is needed,
but skill will bring success.
11 If a snake bites before it is charmed,
the charmer receives no fee.(J)
12 Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious,(K)
but fools are consumed by their own lips.(L)
13 At the beginning their words are folly;
at the end they are wicked madness—
14 and fools multiply words.(M)
No one knows what is coming—
who can tell someone else what will happen after them?(N)
15 The toil of fools wearies them;
they do not know the way to town.
16 Woe to the land whose king was a servant[a](O)
and whose princes feast in the morning.
17 Blessed is the land whose king is of noble birth
and whose princes eat at a proper time—
for strength and not for drunkenness.(P)
18 Through laziness, the rafters sag;
because of idle hands, the house leaks.(Q)
19 A feast is made for laughter,
wine(R) makes life merry,
and money is the answer for everything.
20 Do not revile the king(S) even in your thoughts,
or curse the rich in your bedroom,
because a bird in the sky may carry your words,
and a bird on the wing may report what you say.

10 死苍蝇使做香的膏油发出臭气，这样，一点愚昧也能败坏智慧和尊荣。 2 智慧人的心居右，愚昧人的心居左。 3 并且愚昧人行路显出无知，对众人说他是愚昧人。 4 掌权者的心若向你发怒，不要离开你的本位，因为柔和能免大过。
5 我见日光之下有一件祸患，似乎出于掌权的错误， 6 就是愚昧人立在高位，富足人坐在低位。 7 我见过仆人骑马，王子像仆人在地上步行。
8 挖陷坑的自己必掉在其中，拆墙垣的必为蛇所咬。 9 凿开[a]石头的必受损伤，劈开木头的必遭危险。 10 铁器钝了，若不将刃磨快，就必多费气力，但得智慧指教便有益处。 11 未行法术以先蛇若咬人，后行法术也是无益。
智者出言惠人
12 智慧人的口说出恩言，愚昧人的嘴吞灭自己。 13 他口中的言语起头是愚昧，他话的末尾是奸恶的狂妄。 14 愚昧人多有言语，人却不知将来有什么事，他身后的事谁能告诉他呢？ 15 凡愚昧人，他的劳碌使自己困乏，因为连进城的路他也不知道。
16 邦国啊，你的王若是孩童，你的群臣早晨宴乐，你就有祸了！ 17 邦国啊，你的王若是贵胄之子，你的群臣按时吃喝，为要补力，不为酒醉，你就有福了！
论懈惰
18 因人懒惰，房顶塌下；因人手懒，房屋滴漏。 19 设摆筵席是为喜笑，酒能使人快活，钱能叫万事应心。 20 你不可咒诅君王，也不可心怀此念，在你卧房也不可咒诅富户。因为空中的鸟必传扬这声音，有翅膀的也必述说这事。

Proverbs about Wisdom and Foolishness
10 As dead flies cause the perfumer’s ointment to stink,
so also does a little foolishness to one’s reputation of wisdom and honor.
2 A wise man’s heart tends toward his right,
but a fool’s heart tends toward his left.
3 Furthermore, the way a fool lives shows he has no sense;
he proclaims to everyone that he’s a fool.
4 If your overseer gets angry at you, don’t resign,
because calmness pacifies great offenses.
5 Here’s another tragedy that I’ve observed on earth,
a kind of error that comes from an overseer:
6 Foolishness is given great honor,
while the prosperous sit in lowly places.[a]
7 And I have observed servants riding[b] on horses,
while princes walk on the ground like servants.
8 Whoever digs a pit may fall into it,
and whoever breaks through a wall
may suffer a snake bite.
9 Someone who quarries stone might be injured;
someone splitting logs can fall into danger.
10 If someone’s ax is blunt—the edge isn’t sharpened—
then more strength will be needed.
Putting wisdom to work will bring success.
11 If a serpent strikes despite being charmed,
there’s no point in being a snake charmer.
12 The words spoken by the wise are gracious,
but the lips of a fool will devour him.
13 He begins his speech with foolishness,
and concludes it with evil madness.
14 The fool overflows with words,
and no one can predict what will happen.
As to what will happen after him,
who can explain it?
15 The work of a fool so wears him out
that he can’t even find his way to town.
16 Woe to the land whose king is a youth
and whose princes feast in the morning.
17 That land is blessed whose king is of noble birth,
whose princes feast at the right time,
for strength, and not to become drunk.
18 Through slothfulness the roof deteriorates,
and a house leaks because of idleness.
19 Festivals are for laughter,
wine makes life pleasant,
and money speaks to everything.
20 Do not curse the king,
even in your thoughts.
Do not curse the rich,
even in your bedroom.
For a bird will fly by and tell what you say,
or something with wings may talk about it.

10 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.
2 A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.
3 Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.
4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.
5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
6 Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
9 Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.
10 If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.
11 Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
12 The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.
14 A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
15 The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
16 Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
17 Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
18 By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.
20 Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
