Excelencia de la sabiduría
10 El mal olor de una mosca muerta
echa a perder el mejor perfume.
La tontería más pequeña afecta el prestigio
de quien es sabio y honorable.
2 El sabio tiene el corazón en el lado derecho;
el necio lo tiene en el lado izquierdo.
3 Tan pocos sesos tiene el necio
que aun por el camino va proclamando su necedad.
4 Si el ánimo del rey se exalta contra ti, no te apartes de donde estés. La mansedumbre es el remedio para las grandes ofensas.
5 He visto un grave mal bajo el sol, y tiene su origen en los gobernantes: 6 La necedad es exaltada a grandes alturas, mientras que a los ricos se les sienta en el suelo. 7 He visto a esclavos andar a caballo, y a príncipes andar a pie, como si fueran esclavos.
8 El que cava un hoyo, en él se cae;
al que resquebraja un muro, lo muerde una serpiente.
9 El que pica piedras, se hiere con ellas;
el que parte leña, corre peligro de cortarse.
10 Si el filo del hacha se mella, y no se afila,
hay que golpear con más fuerza.
La sabiduría es provechosa, si se sabe dirigir.
11 Si la serpiente muerde antes de ser encantada,
de nada sirve el encantador.
12 Las palabras del sabio son agradables;
los labios del necio causan su propia ruina.
13 El necio empieza por decir necedades,
y acaba por decir graves tonterías.
14 El necio habla y habla,
aunque nadie sabe lo que va a suceder,
ni nadie le hará saber lo que sucederá después.
15 Tanto se afana el necio
que no sabe cómo ir a la ciudad.
16 ¡Ay del país que tiene por rey a un muchacho, y cuyos príncipes banquetean desde la mañana! 17 ¡Pero feliz del país que tiene por rey a un hombre de alcurnia, cuyos príncipes comen a su hora, para reponer sus fuerzas y no para emborracharse!
18 Por la pereza se viene abajo el techo;
por la flojera se viene abajo la casa.
19 Para pasarla bien se celebran banquetes. El vino es la alegría de los seres vivos. El dinero sirve para todo.
20 No hables ni pienses mal del rey, ni hables mal del rico cuando estés a solas, porque las aves del cielo correrán la voz, y saldrán volando a contarlo todo.

10 As dead flies give perfume a bad smell,
so a little folly(A) outweighs wisdom and honor.
2 The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
but the heart of the fool to the left.
3 Even as fools walk along the road,
they lack sense
and show everyone(B) how stupid they are.
4 If a ruler’s anger rises against you,
do not leave your post;(C)
calmness can lay great offenses to rest.(D)
5 There is an evil I have seen under the sun,
the sort of error that arises from a ruler:
6 Fools are put in many high positions,(E)
while the rich occupy the low ones.
7 I have seen slaves on horseback,
while princes go on foot like slaves.(F)
8 Whoever digs a pit may fall into it;(G)
whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.(H)
9 Whoever quarries stones may be injured by them;
whoever splits logs may be endangered by them.(I)
10 If the ax is dull
and its edge unsharpened,
more strength is needed,
but skill will bring success.
11 If a snake bites before it is charmed,
the charmer receives no fee.(J)
12 Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious,(K)
but fools are consumed by their own lips.(L)
13 At the beginning their words are folly;
at the end they are wicked madness—
14 and fools multiply words.(M)
No one knows what is coming—
who can tell someone else what will happen after them?(N)
15 The toil of fools wearies them;
they do not know the way to town.
16 Woe to the land whose king was a servant[a](O)
and whose princes feast in the morning.
17 Blessed is the land whose king is of noble birth
and whose princes eat at a proper time—
for strength and not for drunkenness.(P)
18 Through laziness, the rafters sag;
because of idle hands, the house leaks.(Q)
19 A feast is made for laughter,
wine(R) makes life merry,
and money is the answer for everything.
20 Do not revile the king(S) even in your thoughts,
or curse the rich in your bedroom,
because a bird in the sky may carry your words,
and a bird on the wing may report what you say.
