Verschiedene Überlegungen
8 Wer ist wie der Weise,
und wer versteht die Deutung der Worte?
Die Weisheit eines Menschen erleuchtet sein Angesicht,
und die Kraft seiner Augen wird verdoppelt[a].
Gehorsam dem König
2 Bewahre mein königliches Wort wie einen göttlichen Schwur! 3 Laß dich nicht von des Königs Angesicht verscheuchen und vertritt keine schlechte Sache; denn er tut alles, was er will. 4 Denn des Königs Wort ist mächtig, und wer darf zu ihm sagen: Was machst du?
5 Wer das Gebot bewahrt, berücksichtigt keine böse Sache;
aber das Herz des Weisen nimmt Rücksicht auf Zeit und Gericht.
6 Denn für jegliches Vornehmen gibt es eine Zeit und ein Gericht;
denn das Böse des Menschen lastet schwer auf ihm.
7 Denn er weiß nicht, was geschehen wird;
und wer zeigt ihm an, wie es geschehen wird?
8 Kein Mensch hat Macht über den Wind, daß er den Wind zurückhalten könnte;
so gebietet auch keiner über den Tag des Todes,
und im Kriege gibt es keine Entlassung,
und der Frevel rettet den nicht, welcher ihn verübt.
9 Dies alles habe ich gesehen und mein Herz all dem Treiben gewidmet, das unter der Sonne geschieht, in einer Zeit, da ein Mensch über den andern herrscht zu seinem Schaden. 10 Ich sah auch, wie Gottlose begraben wurden und [zur Ruhe] eingingen, während solche, die ordentlich gelebt hatten, den heiligen Ort verlassen mußten und vergessen wurden in der Stadt; auch das ist eitel!
11 Weil der Richterspruch nicht eilends vollzogen wird, darum ist das Herz der Menschenkinder voll, Böses zu tun. 12 Wenn auch ein Sünder hundertmal Böses tut und lange lebt, so weiß ich doch, daß es denen gut gehen wird, die Gott fürchten, die sich scheuen vor ihm. 13 Aber dem Gottlosen wird es nicht wohl ergehen, und er wird seine Tage nicht wie ein Schatten verlängern, da er sich vor Gott nicht fürchtet!
14 Es ist eine Eitelkeit, die auf Erden geschieht, daß es Gerechte gibt, welche gleichsam das Schicksal der Gottlosen trifft, und Gottlose, denen es ergeht nach dem Werk der Gerechten. Ich habe gesagt, daß auch das eitel sei. 15 Darum habe ich die Freude gepriesen, da es nichts Besseres gibt für den Menschen unter der Sonne, als zu essen und zu trinken und fröhlich zu sein, daß ihn das begleiten soll bei seiner Mühe alle Tage seines Lebens, welche Gott ihm gibt unter der Sonne.
16 Als ich mein Herz darauf richtete, die Weisheit zu erkennen und die Mühe zu betrachten, die man sich auf Erden gibt, daß man auch Tag und Nacht keinen Schlaf in ihren Augen sieht, 17 da sah ich bezüglich des ganzen Werkes Gottes, daß der Mensch das Werk nicht ergründen kann, welches unter der Sonne getan wird. Wiewohl der Mensch sich Mühe gibt, es zu erforschen, so kann er es nicht ergründen; und wenn auch der Weise behauptet, er verstehe es, so kann er es nicht

Obey Authorities for God’s Sake
8 Who is like a wise man?
And who knows the interpretation of a thing?
(A)A man’s wisdom makes his face shine,
And (B)the [a]sternness of his face is changed.
Obey Authorities for God’s Sake
2 I say, “Keep the king’s commandment (C)for the sake of your oath to God. 3 (D)Do not be hasty to go from his presence. Do not take your stand for an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him.”
4 Where the word of a king is, there is power;
And (E)who may say to him, “What are you doing?”
5 He who keeps his command will experience nothing harmful;
And a wise man’s heart [b]discerns both time and judgment,
6 Because (F)for every matter there is a time and judgment,
Though the misery of man [c]increases greatly.
7 (G)For he does not know what will happen;
So who can tell him when it will occur?
8 (H)No one has power over the spirit to retain the spirit,
And no one has power in the day of death.
There is (I)no release from that war,
And wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it.
9 All this I have seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: There is a time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt.
Death Comes to All
10 Then I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of holiness, and they were (J)forgotten[d] in the city where they had so done. This also is vanity. 11 (K)Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. 12 (L)Though a sinner does evil a hundred times, and his days are prolonged, yet I surely know that (M)it will be well with those who fear God, who fear before Him. 13 But it will not be well with the wicked; nor will he prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he does not fear before God.
14 There is a vanity which occurs on earth, that there are just men to whom it (N)happens according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the (O)righteous. I said that this also is vanity.
15 (P)So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun.
16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done on earth, even though one sees no sleep day or night, 17 then I saw all the work of God, that (Q)a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. For though a man labors to discover it, yet he will not find it; moreover, though a wise man attempts to know it, he will not be able to find it.

8 Chi è come il saggio?
Chi conosce la spiegazione delle cose?
La sapienza dell'uomo ne rischiara il volto,
ne cambia la durezza del viso.
2 Osserva gli ordini del re e, a causa del giuramento fatto a Dio, 3 non allontanarti in fretta da lui e non persistere nel male; perché egli può fare ciò che vuole. 4 Infatti, la parola del re è sovrana; chi può dirgli: «Che fai?». 5 Chi osserva il comando non prova alcun male; la mente del saggio conosce il tempo e il giudizio.
6 Infatti, per ogni cosa vi è tempo e giudizio e il male dell'uomo ricade gravemente su chi lo fa. 7 Questi ignora che cosa accadrà; chi mai può indicargli come avverrà? 8 Nessun uomo è padrone del suo soffio vitale tanto da trattenerlo, né alcuno ha potere sul giorno della sua morte, né c'è scampo dalla lotta; l'iniquità non salva colui che la compie.
9 Tutto questo ho visto riflettendo su ogni azione che si compie sotto il sole, quando l'uomo domina sull'altro uomo, a proprio danno. 10 Frattanto ho visto empi venir condotti alla sepoltura; invece, partirsene dal luogo santo ed essere dimenticati nella città coloro che avevano operato rettamente. Anche questo è vanità. 11 Poiché non si dà una sentenza immediata contro una cattiva azione, per questo il cuore dei figli dell'uomo è pieno di voglia di fare il male; 12 poiché il peccatore, anche se commette il male cento volte, ha lunga vita. Tuttavia so che saranno felici coloro che temono Dio, appunto perché provano timore davanti a lui, 13 e non sarà felice l'empio e non allungherà come un'ombra i suoi giorni, perché egli non teme Dio. 14 Sulla terra si ha questa delusione: vi sono giusti ai quali tocca la sorte meritata dagli empi con le loro opere, e vi sono empi ai quali tocca la sorte meritata dai giusti con le loro opere. Io dico che anche questo è vanità.
15 Perciò approvo l'allegria, perché l'uomo non ha altra felicità, sotto il sole, che mangiare e bere e stare allegro. Sia questa la sua compagnia nelle sue fatiche, durante i giorni di vita che Dio gli concede sotto il sole.
16 Quando mi sono applicato a conoscere la sapienza e a considerare l'affannarsi che si fa sulla terra - poiché l'uomo non conosce riposo né giorno né notte - 17 allora ho osservato tutta l'opera di Dio, e che l'uomo non può scoprire la ragione di quanto si compie sotto il sole; per quanto si affatichi a cercare, non può scoprirla. Anche se un saggio dicesse di conoscerla, nessuno potrebbe trovarla.

8 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
2 I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
3 Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
4 Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
6 Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.
7 For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
8 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
9 All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.

16 When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
17 Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
